Anyone else have problems with players who can't take things seriously? Cause I have one of those at the moment and he's driving me slightly nuts.
I played with a group of 10-ish players for a long time, there was two people who never took it seriously. We stopped that game, secretly invited all the good players, and started a new campaign at the DM's house. They were good people outside of the game but like sometimes you just gotta be real. We also never let them know so as not to hurt their feelings
One of them was there purely to make OP characters, he'd randomly come with a new character. He'd often just attack the party and betray us for fun, and then we'd kill him. It took up entire sessions for no reason The other was a lot more mild, but I still don't think they were super interested in the game. And they weren't like bad people outside of the game, their playstyle just didn't fit with ours. Though people who play like that are really just looking for video games, not TTRPGs
Honestly, just be real with yourself. Don't play with them, you only have one life, and if you know you'd be happier playing with more invested players, just do it. Play with people who care about the game, want to play the game, and in general have a play style that doesn't oppose yours. Definitely talk to them about what makes the game important to them though, why they like it, etc. first, and maybe see if you can change their mind
It is worth noting that sometimes new players just do random things like kill NPCs, and I think this comes from the idea that you can do anything in a game. They want it proved to them that this isn't just some video game. And what can you not do in video games? Kill everyone. Same with when players sometimes seem roleplay shy, they may just be new or don't really know what to do
