Seeing this and the short story, they almost seem like separate characters. I mean that in a good way. A lot of great media has separated views of a character. Very cool.
‘I get sad when I’m not distracted’ actually kind of resonates with me.

Thank you! He craves connection, and usually finds it during fights, which means he thinks he likes violence, but he really doesn't.
His core concept is that he's burnt out from various things, mostly a mix of random chance-induced suffering and pleasure-seeking behavior, but he still wants to be there for people, to not be worthless. He's an entertainer, of course, and his feelings bleed into his work, but he has enough charisma to keep people happy.
His purpose in his cult is to be an example of the idea that their leadership will provide, and they will provide well. He gets a lot of luxuries and such, and he shares them whenever possible, but he's still disliked in the cult, mostly due to jealousy for his freedom. He's alone, and constantly seeking distraction from his pain and loneliness.
Parent's who say their children are a disappointment are basically saying they themselves are a disappointment. 90% of the time its their fault, cause they were the damn ones who taught their kid. And even so, rarely are teenagers/kids a disappointment at all Telling you're kid they're a disappointment is like, they went to jail for murder, not they became a great writer.

It's absolutely despicable to me
You have really good takes, I agree with this completely. Parents who blame their children are admitting to a failure in raising them, even if it is the child’s “mistake”. Another failure as a parent is if your child doesn’t feel you’ve made a safe enough environment for them to speak to them about issues they have. It is never the child’s fault up to a certain point, because if you have spent your entire life living with your parents and only learning from them, every mistake becomes a teaching error on their part - especially if their kid is internalizing these things and blaming themself for it.
And on a similar note, it’s so uncomfortably normalized for parents to make fun of their kids to other people. Like, if I’m speaking to someone and just start telling me their kid’s private stuff (“Yea my son just stays at home and plays video games all day and has no friends or anything”) like dude that’s messed up. I don’t need to know that 😭 or just parents being like “Teenagers are so annoying and rebellious for no reason, they always have to talk back to everything you say” as if that is a normal take to have. It’s not. Teenagers especially are so much nicer when you actually listen to them and talk to them like a normal person. Because they are normal people. Same thing with babies and little kids, people treat them like fine china with no brain.
