The city itself is also far from normal. In fact, it's alive. You wouldn't notice it from just the surface, but the cliff face is a massive organism that slowly grows into the buildings above it, weaving in its metal intestines and electrified gold veins, covering it up with its paper skin and cast stone exoskeleton. The architecture remains opulent in appearance even in the hovels of the poor.
There are many patented recipes to subjugate the eldritch beings down below, typically owned by the wealthy and requiring specially-crafted tools to enact.

I had some ideas for my tavern.
I had this idea that all life has some level of magic in it, and some minerals conduct it. Some living things have more magic than others. So, the reason this matters is that you gain the magical energy of whatever you eat, which is altered ("flavored," perhaps) by what the magic in what you ate was supposed to do. So the classic "power-stealing" version of magic cooking, but here's the twist: stronger foods have side-effects. Your very soul could be overwritten by the very strongest of them. There have been tales of nobles who ate the flesh of dragons, only to have their bodies and souls warp until they become the same dragons with all the powers of the nobles.
So cooking the creature isn't just a method of preparation: it's a method of subjugation so that weaker souls can use them. And of course, since a being sort of lives on after death through its magic infused in its matter, one could stitch pieces together and use a spark of your own magic to reanimate them. In essence, enslaved chimeras/flesh golems.
Basically, resurrection is a common thing, as well as location-specific magical drugs. Not every magical thing is delicious, I should note. Maybe there's an entire culture that eats bitter seeds to survive immense damage in combat.
Perhaps all the different playable species originated from humans, but their different cultural diets led to slow mutation over the generations.
The tavern is in a city on the edge of a cliff. The cliff looks like a regular shore until you notice that as soon as you step into the water, it goes so impossibly deep that no one has seen the bottom, even in a submarine. The depths are filled with all sorts of incredibly powerful magical beings, making this a hot spot for those seeking opportunity.
The city itself is also far from normal. In fact, it's alive. You wouldn't notice it from just the surface, but the cliff face is a massive organism that slowly grows into the buildings above it, weaving in its metal intestines and electrified gold veins, covering it up with its paper skin and cast stone exoskeleton. The architecture remains opulent in appearance even in the hovels of the poor.
There are many patented recipes to subjugate the eldritch beings down below, typically owned by the wealthy and requiring specially-crafted tools to enact.
I'm not sure how the city would look from an architecture standpoint.

For the architecture standpoint, I’d recommend the intricately detailed and signed walls and roofs of Renassaince Architecture but built as Cyclopean Architecture would be. I feel the two combined would create a feeling of dread, as if the city would fall apart any second but is held together by magic and whatever lurks over the cliff.
