Doing some research, I'm going to keep the big fancy murals and paintings and such, but since this is supposed to be based on the Gilded Age I might want to go with that era's big, nearly greco-roman, renaissance revival architecture.
What I'm really having trouble with is how the city should be designed. Like, what should make it distinctive?
You said the ‘being’ had a stone like exoskeleton. Maybe there could be a few cracks in it around the city where it could ‘consume’ food placed in it, which would turn the buildings holding them, even if they are mundane or similar to others, into churches with decoration on every square inch. Each of these churches have a different belief on the organisms purpose. Some believe it’s a guardian against the eldritch beings, some say it’s the guardian for them. The point being each religion functions like a street gang.

In all seriousness, this is a great idea. Perhaps some of the stronger gangs act more like mafia families than street gangs.

Thank you. Maybe they function similarly to the houses in Menzoberranzan? (An established ranking you can climb by killing another house above you but failing to do so earns the destructions of yours. The top seven or so are the ‘official’ government).
