The first thing you notice is the smell- like mildew and old blood and wetlands earth and so many other strong, rotting scents, a vile mixture potent enough to make a vulture retch, snapping you awake like smelling salts from hell. The woods outside are impenetrable as ever under the blanket of midnight, the only visible surroundings the dimly-lit patch of your campsite- laid around sputtering embers where the campfire was- and the thinnest sliver of the moon above. The quietest sounds echo faintly from the north, amidst the shadowed trees. Three pairs of footsteps, two more erratic than the third. The quick yet heavy breathing of some animal, pausing and sniffing every so often before the frantic panting resumes. Muttered words too quiet to fully hear, but just loud enough for your keen senses to notice. At one point, the metallic sound of a chain extending to its fullest length.
Dammit, they're here again- you need to leave now.
Before they find you like they did everyone else from town. Before they eat you like they did everyone else from town.
*I might be cooking something up for later- whether I make this just one character or a whole tavern is yet to be determined.*
That last line is amazing. I love it so much.
*Thank you very much! If I do make this into a tavern setting, it'll likely be quite the harsh one- survival is a tricky thing when it feels like the whole world wants to eat or dissect you or warp you into something unrecognizable.*
