If it's purely damage, you'll want weapons and abilities that build off of one damage source (Like sharpshooter, battlemaster, anything that adds riders to your damage). If you're building a swords bard, you're going to want to pick one of four things: Melee damage focus (I'd suggest paladin levels for smites and a heavy weapon with GWM), Ranged damage focus (Go dex based, sharpshooter, pick up a longbow or firearm, multiclass into fighter I think may be your best bet for action surge), Magic combo focused (Sorcerer gives you metamagic and lets you accentuate your attacks with bonus action spells), or AC/defense/kiting (Take mobile, go swashbuckler rogue, take a few levels in fighter or paladin if you still have room).

When it comes to lore, just ask yourself each of these questions three times, and answer it differently each time. Who is in this world? What happens in this world? When did/do/will things happen in this world? What are some important places in this world? What is something that makes this world unique and distinct? It's fine if you don't get the answers right away. But once you can answer all these questions three times about your world, you know it's almost ready.
