I'm actually working on the setting right now.
The Haunted Lands, so-called due to the innumerable spirits and monsters, are filled with miracles. Even off the coast, there are wonders.
There were thirteen colony ships which came. 12 were abandoned within the year. Colony 13 remains simply because they learned to harness nature's forces instead of simply attempting to slash and burn. It took ingenuity and adaptability, but in the end, it resulted in one of the strongest civilizations known to man.
Oil is nonlethally gathered from whale-like monsters, and the emissions cause the plants to grow faster. Attempting to keep things looking "civilized" was never an option; everything is at least a little overgrown. Grass peeks out from the cobblestones, insects and other critters roam as they please, and the household automatons don't control the lawn so much as make it look at least slightly intentional. Humanoids use alchemy to enhance their bodies with magic, a trick learned from the natives.
'Adventurers' are common, but their job is more peaceful than the name would suggest. Many of them are natives who joined the colonists and took the job because it's just something they've always been doing. See, the adventurers truly explorers. They collect samples of and document the strange, dangerous beings that live across the continent, under it, or in the waters surrounding it.
There's also a plague and a cold war between the guilds and such, but I haven't finished those parts.
