Basically, in the very distant past, the World Soul (effectively the world's God) made a deal with a mysterious being known as the Crow. Because of this deal, the World Soul gives every human a small fragment of itself: a soul. Some people which the World Soul sees promise in gain larger souls, and the ability to tap into the innate power of that soul to create Soul Energy, and through Soul Energy create Soul Techniques. The thread would be set in one of the several main schools that teach these special individuals and the surrounding area.

Exactly. Those people often end up having their souls stripped from them and become Soulless Ones, formless creatures eternally hungry for a soul of their own. Even if they actually manage to claim one, their forms remain twisted, and in fact their existence becomes even more painful, which in turn makes then ever more hungry.

That's actually a cool idea. An entity that uses mortals as a way of getting free art and fanfiction while it just chills out in humanoid form. It loves human culture and creativity and is just utterly fascinated with the little guys.
