Story Conept: Ethical villain protagonist, brought back from the deepest hells by the pagan society he once wronged. He and his team of similar monsters faces off against the Heroes’ Guild who treat the world as a smorgasbord to consume and destroy for their high-class, colonial society even as they encroach on the remnants of “monster” society. While it has its own rather major flaws, the "inferior culture" doesn’t deserve complete subsumption or destruction.
My MC so far is named Gyrs Sangris, and he's the first industrialist possibly ever, and he had a myriad of terrible sins, all related to how he mistreated his community. Worst of all was, according to history and the spirits, "seducing" another man (his boyfriend of seven years at the time) instead of providing children for his family and keeping his bloodline strong.
He took the fall so his beloved could return to nature. It's been hundreds of years since his execution, and his charisma and intellect haven't dulled despite centuries of torment.
I'm thinking his first depicted act would be convincing the spirits that run the hellish plane he lives on that he and his allies (he has never met them before) need new bodies and equipment to do their jobs properly
