My friend and I were chatting about airplanes (for no reason).
I brought up an interesting question, which is pretty easily answered: If you’re traveling opposite to the Earth’s rotation, couldn’t you just escape Earth’s gravity and let it turn beneath you?
It’d take less time and so much more fuel, obviously.
But, he asked and I’ve been wondering: how would travel insurance work, then? If you turned into space junk, would your family get more money than if you drowned in the ocean or were disintegrated on Earth?
Crossing the Karman line is a viable idea for travel in the future. It’s explored in the 39 Clue’s Mission Hindenburg.
Well, is that efficient or quicker, really? You’re traveling less distance (theoretically) if you take the path I described, but…it takes more fuel to accelerate something to 17500 mph rather than 620. Additionally, it takes so much time to get up there.
What about lightweight blimps?
How would those get into space, and how would they hold in the air (pressure difference)?
How would they keep their passengers safe?
Getting into space requires engines. Holding in the air requires changing mixtures at certain altitudes. Passengers? Seatbelts.
It also requires 17500 miles per hour and a lot of vertical thrust. You suggested getting past the Karman line (at 100km), but you can’t just coast up there. Either your blimp has rocket engines, which can do the job, and then it’s no longer a blimp (no point in having the gas), or it just can’t get any higher than the low stratosphere without special modifications.
It can’t just change mixtures. Blimps require helium, and that’s a low-pressure thing that can get them up in an atmosphere. Outer space’s pressure is next to nil. The helium is going to expand much faster than the blimp can deal with it, and there goes the air.
What about breathing? You’ll need life support and an airtight compartment large enough for them all, and that weighs a lot. Could a blimp carry it?
Depends on the size. By blimp, I meant closer to a zeppelin. I misworded it.
AUGUR! I literally just was thinking to myself that it’d be funny if you popped by.
hru?

Yeah, it could carry your compartment, but it’ll still lose its air.
