"What exactly is their method of attacking? And how did they get the name... what was it... Death Cloak?"

Lemm produces an older photograph from one of his pockets and shows it to you: A photograph of that same umbrella-like creature you saw other photos of at the camp. It appears to have a wide, jellyfish-like body with a leathery appearance, and its ribbed appearance suggests a radial skeletal structure within. A long prehensile tendril extends from within the creature, ending in a long, beak-like appendage- its 'jaws' open and presumably ready to lash at whoever took the picture.
"Death Cloaks often try to grab their prey with that claw appendage there. If they latch on, they'll float upwards and engulf their prey. How they digest their prey is still unknown, but I've been told that they apparently have rings of teeth under their cap, similar to a lamprey. As for the name, its partly due to their appearance, and partly due to their high success rate in hunting. We used to call them Death Umbrellas, which I think is a more fitting name, but some people thought it was silly."

"I rather like Death Umbrellas too. Giving dangerous things ridiculous names is a way to combat their terror. Death Cloak does roll of the tongue much more easily though." He says as he examines the picture before continuing on.

After a little ways of walking, the two of you approach the entrance to the shaft: A small concrete structure with a simple door. Opening the door reveals a large metal ladder heading down into the dark below, though it's still just bright enough to see that the grey rocks of the surface slowly transition to a fleshy red as their depth increases.
"Well, here we are. Down there is... well, no one really knows more than a handful of the things down there."

“That means there is more for us to discover!” He says cheerfully. Then Poliard swings down onto the ladder and begins climbing down it, copper studded boots ringing out loudly on the rungs. “Oh dear. I should have fixed my suit up for more silent travel.”
The ladder goes down a long ways... it feels like it takes several minutes for Poliard to reach the bottom. When his heavy boots do, eventually, touch ground again, an odd sight awaits him.
Before him is a large cavernous expanse, with rays of sunlight(?) streaming in from the breathing chasm a ways above and away. The blood red rocks that form the cavern walls and floor have an odd shine to them that would suggest moisture, yet they are dry to the touch. Strange, coral-like organisms- a sickly grey in color and reaching towards their surroundings with gnarled stone-like branches- grow along the walls and ceiling in dense clusters. A web of ancient-looking metal pipes and railings forms a lattice throughout the whole of the cavern, which are overgrown with teal vine-like growths.
Lemm clambers down the ladder behind Poliard and reaches the cavern about a minute before he does, eyes wide in amazement. "Wow... I've only seen sketches of the chasm from other researchers, but this..."

Poliard stands there taking it all in. Only after Lemm breaks the silence does he speak, “Marvelous… fantastic isn’t it?” He sits down and begins to sketch the scene in his notebook.

"Yeah... it's all so surreal..." Lemm spends a little while taking the whole scene in.
A cluster of shrimp-like creatures- the same variety Poliard saw on the dissection table in the camp- inexplicably float past. They collide with walls and railings, seeming only dimly aware of their surroundings, floating along and out of sight.

As Poliard follows after the oblivious levitating shrimp, he trudges through some of the cavern's undergrowth: It's not immediately apparent if it's some variety of plant or mold or coral-like animal, but it could easily be any or all of those. After a while, though, he spots something new: A large, pipe-like structure resembling a drainage culvert, connected to the wall of some large, artificial structure carved from the crimson stone. The curious crustaceans collide with parts of the wall, simply bouncing off and floating elsewhere.
With an 18, Poliard is able to see a short ways down the culvert, and catches a glimpse of some other creature- a segmented tail with two prong-like spines at its end, quickly retreating into the culvert and out of sight. Whatever that creature was, it was comparable in size to the colossal Mara-Uul.
