River is in the cat cafe, sipping coffee like an Englishman would drink tea. He appears troubled, absentmindedly petting two or three of the cats around the couch he rests upon
*The cats are all gone, unfortunately. They were technically Amatarou's familiars.*
The barista opens the back door, hands gloved and an empty trash bag at the ready to pick up garbage. Without any worry, he walks out into the semi-darkness.
It takes a second to spot it, but a black shape lays sprawled out in the mess. The thing is humanoid in figure but flung on the dirt as if it had suffered a great fall. It's breathing heavily and you can see it shiver and tremble. It wheezes in a broken voice, "A-amatorou? You-you aren't... Amatorou..."
"I'm sorry, he's not here." The one-eyed man tucks the bag into his belt and begins to assess the figure's injuries. "Are you a Nightmare or a human?" He doesn't seem to be even slightly bothered by the creature.
"He's... n-not here?... Ha-ha-hallelujah ... heh." You can see that the thing is horribly emaciated. He appears severely starved. "What-what's it t-to you?" He looks up at you and you see two faces smashed into one. Four eyes blinking in the dark, two mouths stacked on top of each other smiling between gasps of air, and two noses flaring side by side. A long ponytail hangs down his back and he wears a cheap brown suit straight out of the 80s. "Got any... Brontë?"

"I've got doughnuts and coffee." He helps the humanoid to their feet, holding them up as he walks back inside. "I have some protein bars and energy drinks I was gonna have for dinner, if you want those."

"Thanks... but do you got anything classical? I'd kill for a good book right about now. Kafka, Shakespeare, heck, I'd even take something by Jane Austen." He seems to have pulled himself together some. One mouth seems to focus on the talking, the other breathes heavily and clenches its teeth on occasion.

"I have everything Kafka, even the unfinished stuff. I wouldn't say I have everything he wrote, given the amount he destroyed, but I'm a fan." He sits them down in the diner and brings out said books and 'dinner.'

"I owe you for this man." With trembling hands he opens up the first book on the table, flipping through the pages. Then he suddenly begins to grab huge handfuls of the pages and tears them from the binding before stuffing them into both of his mouths. The Metamorphosis is quickly devoured as well as The Trial and The Hunger Artist. He's halfway through Amerika when he pauses for breath. He already looks a lot better. "Oooh thanks man. I haven't eaten like this in ages. I haven't eaten in ages."

He stretches. "New Balios Society. The mayor, HOA, municipal services, police force, all of them are working together. They hired me to keep you guys from causing trouble. But that's the thing: you usually don't. Anything I deem 'trouble' is usually 'how it has always been' and I'm not allowed to do anything about it. For such a 'progressive' group, they sure don't want much to change."

He takes a sip of his energy drink. "So, why do you eat books? Wait, wrong question... how should I rephrase?" He thinks for a bit, looking out as the streetlamps come on, flickering as usual.
