"Fearsome Critters were the first Nightmares the white man encountered in the US. They could and did look like anything. They preyed on lumberjacks, and there are so many different critters it's unbelievable. Each of them have their own names, too. There's a bird with a gun for a face, for one. The Squonk is a popular one. It's so ugly that it cries, and its tears melt it into mud. I have no idea what's up with those."
'That's a good point. Never really thought about how Nightmares might be different in different countries. These guys sure sound crazy. Maybe there's a lot to learn there, they'll remember a lot'

The Slink and his allies have fled town. It's gotten too dangerous. They thought they could stick it out, but the Mayor was just too influential. Bloodthirsty mobs of monster hunters scoured Balios, all convinced of their own righteousness. They had a freak to drive away, and they'd trample any other moral niceties in order to get what they wanted. All that mattered was the chase.
The Nightmayor laughed. He had gotten the people to show their true, vicious selves. And that meant that he had triumphed.
