In the dead of night, a thief had broken into the tower of the recently deceased high mage Polaris Silversilk, a Drow mage who had spent his life studying the the sciences behind conjuration- particularly conjuration that allows one to puncture a hole through the veil separating the ethereal and material planes. His tower contained many well known legendary magic items, and several ancient scrolls and books, on many subjects, most revolving around conjuration. Most famed and feared among them, as well as the least understood, as it was only a recent addition to his collection before his death, was the Clavis et Sera ad Inferos, the Lock and Key to Hell. Penned by an unknown author, centuries old at the least, most of its contents remain a mystery.
of course, the thief stole the most powerful and valuable object in the tower, and so the book went missing.
it didn’t take long before a team of Abjurers and Diviners broke through his wards of nondetection and magically deduced his location- only to find him dead, and the Clavis et Sera ad Inferos was nowhere to be found.
(for characters to interact with)
Late one quiet night, in a sleepier, less busy part of the city, much more sparsely populated, a tome bound in red, with frail looking, yellowed pages, with many extra scraps of paper added in, and many other parts removed or scrawled out, sits on the side of the cobbled street, closed tight. A ribbon serves as its bookmark, red and detailed with a golden rim. The spine, decorated with golden flourishes, has the title, Clavis et Sera ad Inferos, written in gold. No one else is nearby, and it’s unclear how to book got there. (Your choice if your character has heard of the book, it’s a famous document among conjurers.)
On her way back to where her and Cassandra were staying, Thalia stumbles across the book. Just her luck.
It is very out of place, just on the side of the street. If you want, she can make a history or arcana check to recognize it.

It’s a very, very large book, probably more than a thousand pages. The very first page is largely blank, except near the top, where there is a short paragraph.
I, unintelligible, have dedicated the last century of my life to researching and compiling all knowledge on the subject of demonology. I have forsaken ethics, morality, and my own personal safety in order to do this… it might not have been worth it. I hope that this tome of my knowledge can benefit the reader. The information within this book is potentially dangerous, and it contains many spells of power that may or may not be outlawed in the time you are reading this. Warning- the tome itself is magical.
these are my findings.

The first page remains the same, and when she examines the second page, and the next 9 pages, it seems each of them describes a different… demonic entity. A specific Quasit with a name she doesn’t think humans can pronounce, an Erinyes, two different Vrocks, and a marilith. For each of them, it details their name, their true Name, a detail of their abilities and magical strengths, what magics they can offer mortals, and a summoning sigil. It doesn’t detail different types of demons, but specific demons instead. It’s… very detailed. And that’s just the first 9 pages.

She goes to what will be her home while they stay here. Cassandra’s already set up another looking glass near the middle of town, with some living space above it. When she gets there, she slips the door to her room closed and turns the lock. Slowly and carefully, she spreads the book open on the bed.

Same first ten pages as before, detailing 5 different specific fiends, two pages for each. Does she read on to further on in the book, or does she more closely examine one of the sections on the specific fiend?
(the five fiends, as previously stated, are a quasit, an Erinyes, two Vrocks, and a marilith. She probably doesn’t know what those are, but the book details them.)
Loschen leans forward, intrigued, as he takes in the death magic timeline. 'I see...I hadn't considered that that would be the typical process, but now that makes perfect sense. It is effectively an advanced form of transmutation, targeting the body and leaving the soul. But yes, you'd be correct; what I'm looking for would be a spell that uses the soul as fuel to annihilate the body; certainly a complex procedure, seeing as targeting a soul with a spell directly is a challenge in the first place, but nothing that can't be achieved. From there I would imagine the unravelling of the soul and its energy decay would take the body along with it into nothingness, provided that its kickstarted with some additional magical energy to fire those furnaces...'
She grins. “Well, soul magic is a sister school to the arcana of death… Perhaps-…” she holds out her hand, casting a simple illusion spell and summoning a mote of vibrating, shifting blue light. “While the structure of a soul is more complex than this in reality, this is simply for a demonstration-… as you said, the soul is effectively a specialized form of magical energy-… what if we were to… effectively destabilize the soul?” The light turns a sickly green and begins to vibrate more intensely. ”we turn the soul into metaphorical firewood, effectively making it temporarily more susceptible to the rest of the spell, which would use the volatile soul in order to create a burst of energy to rend the body to nothingness, taking the soul in the blast?” The mote of light pops.
”of course, we’d have to study the inner workings of the soul to most effectively convert it, and we would have to decide what spell composition would most effectively burn away a soul… what do you think?”

*nope! Not yet, at least :>*
the section details every aspect of a specific Erinyes, named Mulval. It mentions her true name (which is approximately eighty-two letters long) and includes lots of other information about her. For example, it mentions that she is a servant of the Archdevil Baalzebul and works as an enforcer for his wishes. There is a section detailing what powers she is capable of granting a mortal, including pyromancy, the ability to discern truth from lies, and improved physical capabilities. At the end of the section is a sigil drawn into the book, resembling an X with a spiral pattern winding around it, framed by a circle. It’s labeled simply as, ‘summoning circle,’ and gives no further information on it.

It’s a very, very large book, probably more than a thousand pages. The very first page is largely blank, except near the top, where there is a short paragraph.
I,
unintelligible, have dedicated the last century of my life to researching and compiling all knowledge on the subject of demonology. I have forsaken ethics, morality, and my own personal safety in order to do this… it might not have been worth it. I hope that this tome of my knowledge can benefit the reader. The information within this book is potentially dangerous, and it contains many spells of power that may or may not be outlawed in the time you are reading this. Warning- the tome itself is magical.these are my findings.

She yelps and shuts the book, but curiosity makes her open it again

The first page remains the same, and when she examines the second page, and the next 9 pages, it seems each of them describes a different… demonic entity. A specific Quasit with a name she doesn’t think humans can pronounce, an Erinyes, two different Vrocks, and a marilith. For each of them, it details their name, their true Name, a detail of their abilities and magical strengths, what magics they can offer mortals, and a summoning sigil. It doesn’t detail different types of demons, but specific demons instead. It’s… very detailed. And that’s just the first 9 pages.

Her hands shake, and she closes the book, this time for good. But she can’t make herself put it down

She closes the book shut, but she can’t help but remain curious about the contents. She is probably still pretty terrified, however.
what does she do?

She tries to take deep breaths to stops her heart from racing, takes off her jacket, and wraps the book in it before stuffing it in her bag. Out of sight, out of mind. (But it isn’t out of her mind lol*

*So far he's a dhampir with a giant spider familiar that weaves fancy clothes for him. His patron is basically fantasy McDonalds, appropriate for his previous role as a powerful evil ruling over the land. But that was over a thousand years back, you know? He's very flamboyant, very family-oriented (despite having grown up as an orphaned street urchin), and very supportive of others.*
