I am trying to create a hive mind for a worldbuilding project, but I am having a bit of trouble.
I don't want it to be the 'Join us, there is no resistance, we are the ultimate life form' trope. More of a guardians of nature kind of thing. I also want a way to write each member as unique, but still part of the collective. For example, creature A (let's call them Bob) is part of the same hivemind as Jane, but he has a slightly different personality than Jane.
How would one write this?

For the "Guardians of Nature kinda thing": Not 100% sure what your vision for this is, but you can build them with that in regard. They perhaps dwell only in very natural places (I dunno, middle of the forest/bottom of the sea sort of thing). This also would shape their personalities, both as a group but also as individuals, and this could be where you make distinctions between each. Of course, those who live at the bottom of the sea would want to protect the sea more than the forest where its fellows live, but ---- then again, maybe some of those hive-minders down in the sea would protect something unique, since they like it more.
But. The distinctions can be made more clearly through their personalities. They all are a hive mind, and share the same thoughts/beliefs, right? But, of course, there's gonna be some outliers, those who don't always think the same. While I'm thinking about this, what about a calamity? Maybe, a billion years back before any of them were born, they were inflicted with some disease that weakened their collective conscience? Or they've been driven from their home, and being distant from some special artifact of theirs is dulling their senses?
I dunno, but this sounds like an interesting project. Sorry if that wasn't helpful, I'm unhelpful a lot.

This may not be a big help, but the main thing I think you can do is this:
Even though they are in a hive mind, part of their consciousness is still stuck in their body (via muscle memory, the physical effects of trying to override a brain, or the magic just being a weaker form of a hive mind, or whatever you want) and that directly affects how they act and feel. The reason why is does is something along the lines of this; While the hivemind center 'gives' ideals and ideas directly into the brain, the consciousness filters those feelings or the person still keeps their consciousness but at least part of their beliefs get overwritten by the hive mind.
And since it's not a complete overwrite of the person, they can still want to protect the forest or nature (by the hivemind "forcing" them to or smth) and have a personality.

there're enemeys in an old video game called Cybrids. they are a hive mind (as i recall), but each individual has their own personality, the only thing shared is knowlege, and becuase they're robots, they can section that off. for that, you could have a hive mind of trees, communicating through fungal networks. each one knows what each other knows, but they are seprate

I feel like I need to note something about this part of your response:
I am the one who is often unhelpful. You have been exceedingly helpful, both to me and to others.
Thank you, Golden. And come on. You're a really great person.
(and you saying that is being helpful!)
Erm... no, it isn't. I was arguing with you.
So kind of the opposite of helpful.
You were helpful from what I saw, Weslockes was being humble (and just a wee bit self-deprecatory), and you complemented them. So like yeah, even if you tried arguing, it was still helpful :P

Oh, worldbuilding! I suck at it, but love it all the same.
Heya everyone! I'm EJO, DDB's resident immortal rat who appears randomly roughly once every week.
I'm not active much, but always up to talk when I am.
I'm known as CptKurn everywhere but here.
From 5:00 to 7:30 pretty much every day I'm playing either Overwatch, Dead by Daylight or Stellaris
Do not ask me about anything I like because I WILL waffle on for half an hour.
I'm British so I'm not active at the same time as most of y'all
I favor self-deprecating humor because I feel like a liar otherwise.
