GUYS I have an idea
ok, hear me out. the talisman of the sphere is useless, and there is an easier way to control a sphere using only 50gp and a stick.
BEHOLD: the staff of adornment.
According to the 2024 rules, you can place any object weighing less than a pound on top of it (including magic items, as it doesn't specify that it has to be nonmagical). But you might say: "Greenwilds, we don't know how much the orb of annihilation weighs!!!"
We do. It weighs nothing. It is literally a "hole in the multiverse", according to the DM's guide, 2024. Therefore, it can be attached to the staff. It also can be attached without making contact as the item hovers one inch on top of it.
According to the DM's guide (any version), you can make magic items using GP. The staff of adornment is a common magic item, and therefore costs 50 gp, and the cost is reduced if you have the materials.
Therefore, you can control a Sphere of Annihilation with common magic items, easily, and you can make a black hole mace without having to roll intelligence every turn!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this does not work under RAW. Per the text of the Sphere of Annihilation, it "is stationary until someone takes control of it.” The Staff of Adornment does not allow you to move the attached item freely simply because something is attached - the only movement it confers is “While holding the staff, you can make one or more of the objects slowly spin or turn in place.”
Per RAW, you would have a staff affixed in place that is now stuck to a stationary object. At best, you could use the staff’s ability to slowly rotate the sphere in the spot it is affixed - though Rules as Intended, a Legendary item’s “stationary” condition almost certainly trump’s a common item. It would not, however, matter - slowly spinning the sphere still leaves it in the exact same location, with the exact same effect as the sphere is uniform and rotation matters not.
Does causing it to rotate not count as a form of “control”
because, going into a deep argument here, control can be defined as: “to determine the behavior or supervise the running of” And i would believe causIng it to spin would “determine its behavior.” (correct me if wrong plz)

“Controlling the Sphere” is a specific term of art defined within the context of the item Sphere of Annihilation - it is not the colloquial use of the word “control” in the generic, but a specific action that occurs when you make an Arcana check against the sphere. The textbook definition of “control” is inapplicable, because “control” is given a specific definition within the confines of the item at issue.
