But from my background I get a longsword with proficiency, as well as 1d6 additional damage with longsword.
You don't benefit from sneak attacks if the weapon is not ranged or finesse which a longsword is neither.

Legit just hide, that gives you advantage. Wood elf is nice for hiding in places without good ways to hide.

Yep, rogues are good as a main in a regular campaign because that involves things that require you to be a skill monkey, but not in PvP.
