You have travelled far and travelled hard; across the lengthy plains of the Shire, through the Barrow-woods where danger lurks behind each shadow, through the foothills of the Misty Mountains, looking to end your journey here.
The clouds begin to part, and there, adventurer, is it. Rivendell, the City of Elrond. The Last Homely House. Clusters of buildings lurk throughout the valley, a glimmering, winding river unfurling its many branches through the emerald canopy below. A jagged path, rocks barely jutting out of the mountainside, leads you downwards. Your mounts bray, but you stir them on one last time. You are here. Elrond welcomes you, traveller. Make yourself at home.
Locations/Setting
Ah, Imladris! Truly, the place of the times!
Rivendell is characterized by its many locations, only some of which are described here. Feel free to add more/dream up more locations, and we can add them to the OP as well!
The River: The long, winding river characterizes the valley of Rivendell, criss-crossed by bridges and ringed by forest. It provides plenty of places to simply rest, as well as hide — if that is truly needed — but it also has secrets of its own…
The Last Homely House: The house for which the valley is commonly known, The Last Homely House is actually a cluster of buildings, serving the most important purposes (such as housing, of course!), ringing a central courtyard. Elrond mainly dwells here, ready to aid anyone who seeks it.
The Forest: The forest is the other natural place within Rivendell, dotted by small residential buildings and magical at first sight.
The Elf-Homes: Within Imladris’s borders reside many elves, usually away in a more secluded area in the forest. The elves are known mainly for their taunting of unknown — or well-known — visitors, but they are invaluable in times of great need, for their knowledge is great.
General Rules
Recall your permissions! Permission to attack/fight/do violence in general, permission for romance, etc., etc.
If someone tells you that they don’t want you to include something, do not include it. We are serious. I personally can find a way to get you banned.
Keep it SFW and keep 18+ to PMs or fade-to-black. I can’t see what a bunch of elves and 3-millenium-old humans would get up to, but…OK, in all seriousness, keep it chill.
Instead of swearing, use [1gp], (GP), [gp], or any other variation upon those themes.
Nothing derogatory, unkind towards a specific person or group, or something that could be seen as the same.
Please work the word “Imladris” into your first post to show that you’ve read the rules.
Combat Rules
1: If you wish not to participate in any combat, then if combat might happen, tell a mod, and the mod will make sure that you do not have to participate in combat.
2: Max level is 12 (Unless a mod states otherwise, you must start at level one; mods can level you up whenever they believe that you have done enough stuff to deserve it)
3: You may use one of these species: Elf, Dwarf, Human, or Hobbit (Halfing in D&D)
4: No magic items to start, the only way you would get them would be getting given them by a mod, and no more than fifty gold coins
5: Almost all spell-casting classes are hard to find (this rule is more of a guideline than an actual rule). Rangers are the exception to this rule.
6: 2024 rules for combat. That means that you can still use the 2014 rules for class, species, and the like, but in combat, you use the actual 2024 ruleset. You also can’t mix the rulesets
7: Potions are slightly easier to find than other magical items, but they also normally have to be made with rare herbs and plants, some of which you can find around here.
8: If you have proficiency in nature checks, then you may start with a d6 (Roll in the thread) of Athelas stalks, which is required to make a healing potion. And if your class is unrelated to nature, try to have a good reason why you have Nature proficiency.
9: No godmodding, at all.
Potions of healing
All of these rules are only relevant if you want a character to craft potions of healing, and you do not have to read them unless you wish to have a character that uses them.
Potions of healing are rare, powerful healing items that can be used three times before they are consumed. The rarest of these potions not only cures someone of all disease, wounds, and scars, but reduces the person's age by 20 years!
The requirements for a normal potion of healing
1: A stalk of Athelas leaves
2: A glass flask
3: One eyeball of a giant spider
4: One toenail of an Orc
And the requirements for a greater potion of healing.
1: Two stalks of Athelas leaves
2: One glass flask
3: The Ear of an Orc
4: The shredded abdomen of a giant spider
5: The last breath of a Man in a phial
And the requirements for a Superior potion of healing.
1: Three stalks of Athelas leaves
2: One glass flask
3: Eight stalks of Thyme
4: The Flesh of a Zombie, or other animated corpse
5: The last breath of a hobbit in a phial
And the requirements for a Supreme potion of healing.
1: Four stalks of Athelas leaves
2: One glass flask
3: Fifteen stalks of Thyme
4: A Nazgûl skull
5: The last breath of a dwarf in a phial
And the requirements for an Ultimate potion of healing.
1: Five stalks of Athelas leaves
2: One glass flask
3: The ear of a living balrog
4: The foot or similar appendage of a creature of the deep. Creatures like this are normally found in the deep places of the earth. The Mines Moria is one of those places. Mostly under Khazad-Dûm
5: Smoke from a creature of undeath. The most common is Wright's.
6: The last breath of an Elf in a phial
Rules for harvesting
You can find herbs like the Athelas and Thyme with Nature checks in the Lone Lands and the surrounding valley of Rivendell. You must take one hour of uninterrupted searching, and at the end, you may make a DC 15 for Thyme or a DC 20 for Athelas. On a success, you find 1d4 stalks.
Creature parts can be harvested with a DC 13 check from a dead creature unless it says otherwise. If it says that you need a live creature, you must make a contested strength check. On a success, you can make a DC 17 nature check to harvest it. On a failure, you take 3d6 damage of a type appropriate to the monster. If a creature is incapacitated, then you automatically succeed.
If a potion requires the last breath of a creature. You must find a creature of that type who is about to die, and make a DC 10 check. On a success, you manage to get the last breath of the creature into a phial; success or failure, the creature dies immediately, but it is painless.
The smoke from a creature of undeath must be harvested via a phial and a living creature of that type. Once you find that creature. You must make a DC 23 nature check to get the smoke into a phial, unless you manage to convince the creature with a DC 20 persuasion check to willingly give the smoke, which makes the nature check an automatic success.
Note: if the type of a check is not mentioned, assume that it is a nature or survival check.
Statistics for Healing Potions
All healing potions have three uses and take a bonus action to drink one use.
A normal healing potion heals 4d4 + 4 and removes the poisoned condition
An uncommon heals 6d4 + 6 and removes the poisoned, blinded, and deafened conditions
A superior healing potion heals 8d4 + 8 and removes the poisoned, blinded, and deafened, and charmed conditions
A superior healing potion heals 10d4 + 10 and removes the poisoned, blinded, deafened, charmed, and incapacitated conditions condition
An ultimate healing potion gives you all of your HP back and removes all conditions other than prone and invisible. You also add 20 years to your lifespan.

Harvesting rules for Metals
Iron can be mined basically anywhere. You can buy it at most markets; one ingot costs 25 gold pieces. In a normal iron mine, finding high-quality ore takes one day, and at the end of the day, you make a DC 10 perception check. On a success, you can harvest the ore; on a failure, the ore is in a hard-to-reach spot, and you must take one more day to find it. High-quality ore can be refined into 5d4+5 iron ingots.
Yew can be found in any forest that is older than 200 years. Harvesting a good branch costs a DC 15 perception check.
Platinum can be found in high-quality ore. You can spend two days refining the ore and find 1d20+5 ounces. This process destroys some of the iron, reducing the iron ingot count to 3d4+3
Gold can not normally be found in iron mines; you must spend three days searching the misty mountains to find a suitable place to sink a mine into the ground to find it. This process is much faster with dwarfs, as they know the mountains well. If you have at least one dwarf in your company, the time taken is reduced to one day.
Once you have found your mine, you must take 100/half the number of people in the company to find gold ore. Gold ore can be refined into 2d12 ounces of gold.
Mithril can only be found in the required amounts in the Mines of Moria. To venture into them is very hard, and not enough people have lived to do so for any large amounts of information on where the ore is, other than one piece of a scroll written about it.
“The ore for Mithril is exceptionally rare, and can only be found via the canyon that the dwarves call Khazad-Dûm. Find the location inscribed with that name, secure the location, and you have the means to make the greatest fortune ever amassed.”
The essence of a balrog can only be found by binding a balrog, forcing it to serve you with a dark magic rite, and then releasing it from service by killing it. Collecting the essence in a phial made of pure mithril.
The branch of an ent can be found by finding and asking an Ent for one.
Water of the deep can be found by delving over 5 miles into the earth. The only place this has been done before was Khazad-Dûm, and it ended with a balrog overtaking Moria.
The soul of an elf must be willingly given by an elf lord. Instantly killing the elf lord and binding the soul within a ring.
Great powers include Morgoth, Sauron, Galadriel, Eldrond, and Gandalf.
The statistics for magical weapons
If a weapon gains a special property, then you must send said special property to a mod to be approved.
A common magical weapon gives you a +1 to hit and to damage
An uncommon magical weapon gives you a +2 to hit and to damage. The item also gains one special property.
A rare magical weapon gives you a +3 to hit and to damage. It also gains two special properties.
A very rare magical weapon gives you a +4 to hit and to damage. It also gains three special properties.
A legendary magical weapon gives you a +5 to hit and to damage. It also gains four special properties.
A mystical weapon gives you a +8 to hit and to damage. It also deals an extra 10d6 damage on a hit and gains six special properties.
Example magical weapon special properties include
Dealing an extra 2d10 damage when it hits a specific creature type
Inflicting the poisoned condition on a hit
Dealing extra damage on a crit
Always critting when used to hit an object
Quest Board
A small board, cork, and framed by wood, has been crookedly affixed upon one of the Last Homely House’s walls. Upon it lie three papers:
One describes a plight that has recently clutched its jaws upon the mountain passes—a dragon has settled there. Albeit small, its green scales and acidic breath have dissuaded all oncomers. It has not shown interest in being reasoned with, yet no one has attempted to do so. A merchant group offers 50 gold to anyone brave enough to venture there and find a solution.
The other is a plea from relatively far away: a group of farmers who eke out their living in the darker, bleaker lands off west has begun to spread rumors about mysterious black figures that have been approaching, searching for…something, but then leaving once again. They haven’t done anything yet, but they’ve been looking around, and it’s begun to frighten them and their livestock to the brink of running away. They offer a hefty reward (unspecified) to anyone willing to reason–or to battle–these creatures.
Orcs and Spiders have been attacking travellers on their way to Rivendell, and many have only just barely made it past. Dark things now lurk upon the path, and grim tidings have come to Imladris. The same merchant group as above offers 50 GP to protect a late caravan train from enemies and get them to Rivendell safely.

*You definitely should read the books; they're pretty classic and they sometimes come up a lot (not quite MP&tHG levels, but close) in some D&D conversations.*
*For mythical species, there's a pretty wide diaspora, but not as wide as D&D is. I think that it's certainly possible to imagine creatures like, say (for example), aarakocra roaming Rivendell/Imladris, but, at the same time, they aren't featured in the books.*
*Honestly, this is a question for the players of this thread. How down-to-the-book do you want to play? Do you want everything to be exactly how it is in there, or are you up for less constrained options?*
