I just wanted to bring a certain show I have been watching lately. And also reading the light novels as well to peoples attention. That show is called: Goblin Slayer. Its a bit graphic in nature so if you are a younger person I would greatly recommend you not look this show up. But if you are an adult and can handle a show that is a bit graphic in nature then I highly suggest you look this one up.
It is a Japanese Manga ( comic book ) and Anime ( Animated show ). Since it is Japanese in nature they have a much less strict cultural way of looking at ahem....nudity and other taboo subjects you will commonly see in US entertainment. That being said I feel I need to say that while it touches upon some very Taboo subjects in the first episode. The show kinda uses the first episode as a shock factor episode to lay down the ground work for how brutal the world its set in can be. But for now the first episode is the harshest one. So once you get past that its fairly easy to progress through. But don't say I didn't warn those of you out there who are easily offended. Its Japanese and their culture has a different way of looking at things than people in the U.S. do. So if you can't handle that then please just ignore this post and click the next one.
I wanted to write this whole paragraph explaining what Goblin Slayer is. But honestly that would be a huge spoiler to anyone discovering it for the first time. So since I have warned people about the shows graphic nature. And please know its not a porno or some such lol. Its just got a few shocking scenes in it that if you aren't used to that kind of thing aka watched a ton of Japanese anime. Then you may be offended or shocked. I know how delicate people in the US have become lately so I needed to explain that about the show ahead of time.
Anyways instead of explaining the show to people I will instead tell you how to find it.
Crunchyroll has the show. I think they still have a free option to watch shows. But you will of course get adds out the ying yang in the free option. But its does the job if you don't want to pay for it. The other option is if you want to read the Manga version. Then I recommend Google Play. I find "most" of the books I want to read there. Unfortunately publishing companies don't sell rights to everything to all online sellers. So its kinda funky finding titles online and you have to use several sellers to find them all. Or use free sites. But I advise against the free sites. They have lots of adds. But also who knows if they are loaded with malware as well. Back to Crunchyroll. I highly recommend the subscription option. They have more shows than possibly Netflix it seems lol. They seriously have a ton of anime shows there. Many of them have fantasy settings that might inspire some of you in your D&D campaigns. I don't work for Crunchyroll or anything. I just have enjoyed my subscription there just so much that I feel its needed to tell others how good it is.
Anyways Goblin Slayer is something I feel does a decent job of giving people a idea of what a more realistic campaign might look like. I have seen allot of campaigns where everything is a constant joke and everyone is either goofy or just plain silly in nature. I know there are people out there who desire a more realistic campaign setting. A gritty bloody kind of world where your characters life might actually end instead of being polymorphed into a cute bunny because you made a demon lord angry by not giving her flowers. You know what I mean! Those campaigns are fun sometimes and you get your hahas out of it. But you may desire something a bit harsher in nature. Something more...…...METAL! lol anyways I just wanted to point people in the direction of a good show. But also to a place of entertainment that I never knew existed until someone I know told me about it. Ok all happy plastic tossing and have a great week.

There are many anime and live Japanese shows that can be used for D&D inspiration. It can be hard to weed them out unless you know what you're looking for, and yes, silliness is a solid core trope of anime. You can easily drop that part out if you want more seriousness and just to keep the setting.

I really like the concept of this show, except for... (Trigger warning / Spoiler warning)
Why the hell did they need to make the goblins so rapey!? WTF!? This was a major turn-off for me. I couldn't believe how dark the first episode was. and not because of killing. The second episode didn't have any actual **** in it, which is good, but it sure referenced it plenty. Third episode... no ****. All good. Maybe we're done with that whole unfortunate business. 4th episode... back to the **** references. So unnecessary.
Anyway, I'm going to give the 5th episode a try, but THAT THING is threatening to make me drop Goblin Slayer entirely, which is a real shame because it could be a great D&D type show.
Don't worry about the AHEM thing that is almost turning you away. I have read the Manga a few chapters ahead and I haven't seen it appear again. But I think they put it in the Manga and the show to really hammer home how brutal that world can be. But also to help setup how Goblins keep multiplying so easily in their world. There is another Manga with this issue in it as well called: Re- Monster. In that one there is allot of references to Human women being used as breeding stock for the Goblins. But they don't actually SHOW it happening. But theres plenty of references to it at the beginning. But after a while the main character pretty much turns it all.....well that's a spoiler. Sigh just know the REEEALLLY bad issue does go away lol.
I also recommend Re-Monster. And Skeleton Knight as 2 Manga that are pretty good reads and have some fun characters and settings that might could work in D&D.
Record of Lodoss War - about as close to D&D as you can get.
Ninja Scroll - very adult, but the world and villains are great.
Sword Art Online - good all around but a lot of material not D&D.
Magi: *whatever*
Fairy Tail - lots of silliness but the world and the quests are pretty good.
Soul Eater - again, lots of silliness but tempered with more seriousness than Fairy Tail.
Sword Art Online has just a few episodes that were D&D ish. But the Story line for it was way too far out there at times. And the Kirito jesus-kun is a hard character to like.
Overlord is a great D&D ish world with allot of powerful and fun characters.
Allot of the reincarnated or lost in another world animes have D&D related themes and stories.
Fairy Tail for me falls too closely to the silly and goofy campaigns.
Soul Eater had that witch that was actually a cat. Shes probably the sexiest character I have seen in anime. And that's saying allot lol.
And im not a fan of Magi. But Onepiece is a great story line. Of course there are simply too many animes to count that have some relatability to D&D and many offer NPC ideas that would be incredibly fun to see played out.

Re: Sword Art, Come on, the story line with Tonky is really cute.
Yeah One Piece is great! But it also has goofy parts. Japanese people can't help themselves =)

Record of Lodoss War was a favorite back in college. I think I still have one of the soundtrack CDs that I bought at a local anime store back in the 90s when those were still a thing. I also enjoyed Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash in 2016. It definitely had that "young adventurers party struggling and leveling up" feel to it.
Yeah I fully agree with the Japanese loving Goofy characters. Sometimes I wonder if they even know when to pull back with some stories.
Uhm another anime I thought about is: Gate A anime about a modern world meeting a fantasy world and the two worlds clashing and how that might play out.
I love Gate :) I thought about mentioning it, but decided against it because it's kind of modern/fantasy, but I'm glad you did. As for Goblin Slayer, Episode 5 was the most D&D episode yet. They really dug into the practical challenges of being a level 1 adventurer and had me laughing. I can relate, fellow newbies.
This thread died before this came out but imma just put it out there, The Rising of The Shield Hero, pretty D&D although it's supposed to be a MMO, think SAO except a whole lot better plus the MC is likeable.
