I have no idea where to ask...or if it is ok to ask...but I would like to see if any old school gamers played it. Also would think that an episode of Critical Role devoted to playing it would naturally spark interest in a reboot. I have seen the many fan pages and 5e fan adaptations but wondering if anyone took a break from D&D to play Star Frontiers in the 80's?
Still have the original box and a couple of the adventures. TSR's ventures outside of AD&D/D&D were hit and mostly miss. Gamma World and Star Frontiers were at least semi-hits (some would argue Top Secret). Then there was Boot Hill, Indiana Jones, Conan, Red Sonja, Alternity... *sigh*
Star Frontiers was fun, it had it's moments, it played out like Space 1999/'79 Battlestar Galactica more than Star Wars/Star Trek which were the main sci-fi tropes of the time. I recall one game where the SW action figures came to play and poor Greedo was annihilated a dozen times. But that's about the clearest memory I have anymore.

This one was ok but, there were far better RPG's that were created back then. Star Frontiers had a lot to offer but fell short in a lot of areas. We did try it but ended up slipping into the world of Travelers. This game had everything and it easily falls into my top 5 RPG list. The game also spawned the TV show Firefly. It was awesome. You can still find the newer version of the game and grab a PDF of the original rules. I would suggest you take a look.
TSR put out other games as already mentioned and were fun but, lacked the staying power of adventure after a few sessions.

I played Boot Hill for the first time...um, about 2 weeks ago. lol We've been experimenting with old systems when we don't have our full group. I started gaming in 2004 so it was way before my time. But it was fun. I love how all you gaming old heads ( I say this with the upmost respect) are on these forums sharing games you used to play and memories of them. You are our gaming historians. Thank you. :)

If you liked Boothill you might like to try Deadlands. It's sort of a combo of Boothill and Call of Cthulhu.
On a side note and I'm sure I speak for some of us old gamers, but I love seeing this new crowd emerge. A whole new generation of creative minds filled with imagination and new ideas. It's just awesome!

I feel like I'm still in the new crowd even though I have been playing for years. Paul, my friend in my Friday night game has been playing since 1980, learned how to play when he was fighting the Cold War in Germany. He tells stories of how people would judge their gaming group until they went to do training and they had the best team cohesion in their battalion. (Their tanker unit was even in Soldier of Fortune magazine for the drills they did in California.) Gaming with him and seeing how he responds to this generation of gamers is exciting. He still has this awe at how far the game has come. I am so glad I got him back into it. He's my friend's Uncle and we were talking about it at a cookout and I said, come play again, come back to the Darkside. He thought the game was dead, something to remember in the past. Lo and behold, his nephew's homie was a super D&D and Pathfinder nerd. lol
But, I couldn't imagine loving something like D&D and being shunned for it. Or being a kid wanting to play a game that was more than Super Mario and the world not understanding what it was. The stigma of the game kept me away when I was younger and I wish it wouldn't have. As soon as I rolled my first d20 I was hooked. But, I really haven't dealt with the harassment that I have heard others have gone through for playing. I mean, I have heard the jokes here and there, but I have friends who don't play and they don't dog me for it. Never have.
Anyways, I strayed from my point. That even though I got 13 years of playing under my belt I still feel like a kid sitting at the grown-ups table hearing old stories of gaming and games people used to play. I have an idea about gathering a collection of stories from old school gamers, the games they used to play, why they played and what was their favorite adventures. I can't be the only person who wants to hear these old "war stories". I'm sure of that. Sort of like a living history of D&D, not from the game's point of view but from the players.
And I will have to check that out. I still haven't played Call of Cthulhu. Only because Cthulhu scares the hell out of me. It's the only book I read as a kid that gave me nightmares. lol That dead God can lay awake dreaming all he wants, as long as it's super far away from me.

My best friend was our GM for Star Frontiers and I DM'ed for our D&D games - then Robotech came along and we all switched over to that (with the occasional dip in to Ninja's and Superspies, or Car Wars etc) so yeah I've been playing since the mid 80's myself.

OMG! Car Wars LOL! That's a game I haven't of in a few decades. The time I wasted in class designing new cars. Robotech was also pretty good. We started that one after a year of hardcore Battletech mech fights. How about Star Fleet Battles and the 456 pg. rule book and that was the basic game haha!

I played Robotech and Ninjas and Superspies! Palladium Games for the win, am I right? Kevin and his team made some great worlds that I got introduced to back in 2006. And Car Wars...that just sounds like it would be dope.

I used to play Star Frontiers back in the day - I loved my Dralasite and my Vrask!
