So, I saw Guardians last night and want to talk about it with my favorite geeks in the world. So, I will make this a spoiler post. Don't read on if you haven't seen the movie OR want spoiled. Because I am spoiling the crap out of this movie. I swear, it will be so spoilery that spoiled milk will be like, "C'mon, man!"
So, don't read further if you don't want spoiled. I also ask if you are posting about the movie after seeing it or asking questions, please make your comment a Spoiler. Just highlight it and click on the "!" menu bar above. It's super simple. Don't ruin it for others. Now let's get into it...
Holy hell, was this movie one heck of a ride. From the very first scene until the last it had me on the edge of my seat. Either with pure unadulterated laughter at watching Baby Groot dance or the emotional roller coaster at the end of the flick. (“He may have been your father but he wasn’t your daddy.”) Drax as the emotional backbone of the Guardians and their family unit was surprising and a perfect arc for Batista's character. I loved it and it made me love Drax more than I did in the first movie, which was already a lot. Also, Dave Batista's timing and line delivery felt more fluid this time. That was great.
But what really got me was that even when this movie slowed down for a few beats it always felt like something was about to happen. When they crashed on Barabrat (I actually can't remember the name of the planet but I know it's something like that...lol) I literally felt like I was a part of the story because I was so drawn in. James Gunn worked his magic again and made a movie that not only lived up to the Guardians hype train but delivered 110%.
I liked Ego. I liked him a lot. But I also knew who Ego was before going into this film. I read the comics he was in and I really feel like he was well written. And Kurt Russel...man, that guy is awesome. The first scene in the movie we get a flashback to 1980 (with Guardians Vol. 2 taking place 34 years later in 2014...figure that one out for Marvel timelines) and we see Peter Quill's mama and her spaceman, Ego. The CGI effects to make Kurt look young again were phenomenal. What's really crazy, is I heard most of it was the makeup from Kurt's makeup artist. If this is true, WOW! Contouring is amazing...lol Flashforward to the future and Ego saves Quill and company from The Sovereign, gold colored beings who are pissed that Rocket stole their quantum batteries (?I think that's what they were.) He literally flies in riding on top of his spaceship as if he was Teen Wolf on top of a van surfing. When he finally meets Peter he takes him to his home world and informs Peter that he is a Celestial and tells him his whole life story, slowly grooming Peter to take his place next to him. I know how Ego works and I was still taken by surprise by how he went about grooming his own son to destroy so many planets so he can be one with the Universe. Not gonna lie, it was expertly played by Kurt Russel but it's also kind of creepy when I think about it. He shows up and takes Peter to a planet made of himself, plays catch with Peter like Peter always wanted, talks about girls and the worlds and his plans...then bam! Snatches him up and makes him a battery. Ego saying he killed Mama Quill by giving her cancer was a little bit of a shocker and Peter rage shooting his father was really in the moment. We haven't seen Peter so emotional since he was a child crying and running away from his mother's deathbed. Chris Pratt really pushed it here, I could feel his rage and his hurt.
I know this is kind of all over the place and it will be. There was so much I enjoyed about the movie that my thoughts are racing.
Rocket's character growth here felt a little stalled at first. He seemed to be the same dickhead raccoon as before and it didn't make sense until Yondu had a moment with him/ Wasn't that something? Yondu again for the win. He has a lot of big moments in this film and this was one of the best. Rooker really delivered his performance here. Maybe when am actor knows their character is going to die they don't phone it in and they give their role more juice? I don't know, but it wasn't anything Rocket said that made me understand why he was the way he was, it was Yondu explaining who HE was. And in doing so should us, the audience, who Rocket was. It clicked, and my heart broke a little bit. Rocket hasn't had the easiest life and I feel like a lot of jokes made towards him he takes personally. Especially from his friends and teammates. When Quill called him a Trash Panda I thought it was funny but kind of messed up. Rocket even asked if that was better than Raccoon because I feel like he just wants acceptance. There ain't no one like him in the Galaxy, he's alone other than Baby Groot. I really felt for him and his journey from dick to Guardian level hero again was great.
Nebula and Gamora's story, the rivalry the two shared under Thanos's care really was put on display here. Nebula said it herself, "You're the one who wanted to win. All I wanted was a sister." Because everytime Nebula lost to Gamora, Thanos would tear a piece of her off and replace it with a robotic body part. I love how it was a back and forth for the whole film. I mean, with so much going on, of course, Nebula would have to be the thorn in everyone's sides. Well, mainly Gamora's. She did get Yondu's loyal crew killed, Rocket and Yondu captured and Baby Groot tortured...but she really did turn it all around at the end. Her joining the Guardians was something expected from all the press but it really does feel like a good fit for this cast of misfits.
Sean Gunn was great. Sly Stallone was great. The end credits were amazing. The fights were dope. "The Chain" playing in the fight between Ego and Celestial powered Starlord was a deep cut to the heart. Baby Groot's Baby Groot antics were a non-stop joy. The soundtrack was also more of a deep cut, but still relevant to the flow of the film. I really loved the funeral at the end. And the color palette of this movie is amazing. Guardians really felt like the comic book come to life.
There is so much more, but we can discuss all that later. What were your favorite parts of the movie? Did you like it? What do you think didn't work? Remember to make your post a SPOILER if you are discussing the movie. I will probably add more later, but work is almost done and I have a long night of gaming in front of me.
9.8/10 Best Superhero movie to date and just about flawless! Yes, it's that good.
Okay that's your Spoiler discussin/review... add more to the conversation below. :)

"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

If you're warning people that there will be spoilers, what need is there to use the spoiler blocks?
Anyway, of all movies ever made in the history of Earth, GotG strikes me as being, by a long shot, the closest representation of a real Dungeons & Dragons group, personified. Sure, it's in space and sci-fi, but that's kinda irrelevant really. They're still basically a bunch of misfits that make stupid jokes and bicker all the time and rush headlong into danger with some stupid plan that has no chance of actually working and dies on impact with the enemy, but somehow, through sheer luck and stubbornness, they not only get the job done, but become friends along the way.
AKA, every group I've ever played with, ever. Well... except for maybe the friends part. There are some really creepy players out there...

Just in case someone accidentally clicks on it or wants to be spoiled and changes their mind. Better safe than sorry, especially on the interweb. And I never saw GotG like that before, but that makes 100% sense. Maybe that's why I love their movies so much?

Just saw it. I have to say that I do believe the GotG movies are my favorites out of all the Marvel movies, with Winter Soldier being a close 2nd.

Favorite line from the movie:
"He may have been your father, but he wasn't ya daddy." Right in the feels Yondu, right in the feels....

Took the family to this last night and we all agreed that this is your average Dungeon and Dragons group as well.
Thought was movie was enjoyable and made me laugh a ton! Family averaged it to 4.8 critical hits out of 5.

Agreed with Hartless - I absolutely loved both Guardians #1 and #2. Followed by Winter Soldier and Civil War.
Beautiful films.
