So this has been an obsession of mine for the longest of time, and I want the true answers after so long. But I want to be able to truly translate my real self into the world of D&D or ESO and so on and so forth. To me having doing that helps bring true representation and immersion while playing a game. What would be the best way to translate your real self into a universe like d&d for example? What race? What class? What background? Etc.
What race/class/background would you want to be if you lived 600 years ago and there was magic and hobbits and rogues? That's the big question
Start with what you think is your biggest strength. Do you pride yourself on being strong, nimble, smart, etc. Then take that stat and make it your main stat. Everything else will be easier. For example, if you were a priest in real life, you might decide that your fantasy self is a cleric or paladin. (Or even Celestial Warlock.) If you are a librarian, you might become one of those spell slinging scholars of magical might, a wizard. You might choose the Sage background if you consider yourself highly educated, or even the Folk Hero, if you pride yourself on being an active community worker. Another helpful thing to do is ask a friend. They might have their own suggestions, and you might like them. In the end, do what you think is best and have fun doing it.
What about a guy who is in college currently majoring in computer science but is working towards getting into the game industry? I also asked a bunch of my friends and they told me I would be a Wood Elf but I know I would have a very high charisma.
Do you picture yourself having great Charisma because you are great with people and love to make them laugh? If so, you might want to play a bard. Do you picture yourself with high Charisma because you have a strong will and you are a natural leader in difficult times? Maybe paladin is the right fit. If you are a college student majoring in computer science, you might have the background of sage, representing the studying you are doing. Your class might be a sorcerer who displays natural talent in the fields of [insert spellcasting stuff here]. You might be a warlock who made a bargain with a powerful entity that teaches you arcane secrets and tricks. As I have said before, do what feels right. If your friends say you would be a Wood Elf, ask them why they say Wood Elf. See what part of you they think says Wood Elf, and decide how that would translate into your fantasy self.
