IM currently playing a character who was a paladin who left the order after his comrade betrayed him for power, now he's distrustful of paladins. At this point a decade has passed since the betrayal and he's become and Eldritch Knight. After trying EK for a while (around 5th level now) I'm not really a fan of the flavor of the class (maybe it gets better later on but if I'm gonna make changes idea rather do them now than later). What class do y'all think would fit a shunned former paladin looking for revenge?
Have you considered Oath of Vengeance Paladin? What don't you like about the Eldritch Knight? Are spells a requirement for you? What race? How are stats made? Any restrictions on source materials? Are you allowed to Multiclass?
I'm thinking about doing an oath of vengeance, Eldritch Knight is not as spell heavy as I would like, he's a human, point buy, no UA, and yes I'm allowed to multiclass.
I was thinking of maybe making a vengeance paladin/ shadow sorcerer possibly. Our group does already have a sorcadin (conquest/divine soul) in it so I was thinking making another one may be kinda cheap
Warlock is also a good choice. you get about close to the same spells known but you get spell slots back on a short rest. Or bard college of whispers.
So warlocks can fight like paladins with pack of blade and eldritch smite, and with celestial pack you get healing spells. You just need to remember you don't have as many hit points. Story wise you can say an angel(or being from your god or order) is giving you that sword to redeem your order.
With bard college of whispers maybe the bards of that college are the ones who told you about your order.
The hardest part of multiclassing is figuring out when to switch classes.
If you are 5th level Eldritch Knight now you could take Warlock the next two levels then EK 6 - W3 - EK7 then Warlock after that. The recommendation for additional EK levels is for the feat/ stat gain as you will likely need to boost your Cha. You may even want to take EK 8 at some point.
To fit in with your disillusioned Paladin background I would recommend Pact of the Blade and Celestial patron. This option works well with your current martial prowess, at character level 8 knows 6 cantrips (2 set by patron), 7 L1 spells known and a total of 5 spell slots. Your patron would also grant some Paladin like abilities. Pact of the blade allows you to summon a (melee) weapon as an action, choosing it's form each time it is summoned. It also allows you to make an existing magical weapon your pact weapon. This makes it very difficult to steal your weapon and even allow sneaking a weapon into places you shouldn't. If magical weapons are rare the Invocation: Improved Pact Weapon upgrades to a +1 weapon and also allows you to summon a ranged weapon (unless you chose an existing weapon). Cantrip choice is tough. Eldrich blast is a good ranged cantrip and can be enhanced by Invocations. However cantrips like Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade may be a better match (Celestial patron grants a ranged damaging cantrip) especially combined with Feat: War Caster and the EK7 class feature. At W5 the Invocation: Eldritch Smite would be appropriate. The major down side to this multiclassing is your spells will be weaker than an equal character level Warlock but slightly better than an EK.
If you want slightly more spell oriented you could take Warlock: Pact of the Tome which give more cantrips and ritual spell casting.

What don't you like about the Eldritch Knight?
Are spells a requirement for you?
What race?
How are stats made?
Any restrictions on source materials?
Are you allowed to Multiclass?
