Here's what the spell is able to find:

Quarterstaff of Shards

Carved by the Dwarven Monks of Koga.

The quarterstaff does not require attunement to use some of its basic magical and non-magical properties. These properties include:

• The crystals embedded into the head of the staff emit 10 ft of light when within 30 ft of non-malicious beings (any non-evil alignments); excluding the bearer of the staff, constructs, and plants. This happens automatically.
• As a bonus action, the bearer of the staff can control the intensity of light emitting from the crystals, up to a distance of 60 ft. This includes turning the light off and on and controlling how far the light goes, but it does not allow control over whether the staff glows within 30 ft of non-malicious beings.
• It can be used as a regular quarterstaff to make melee attacks.

Other properties can be unlocked with attunement, but said properties vary greatly with the user. It is impossible to know what will happen when it is attuned, but you're certain it will do something.

Feels more like a torch than a magic item though… at least it’s not the kind of magic that has claws and attacks.” Alsooo welcome new player! I am playing Clementine, the very friendly dissector of magical creatures. She’s wearing a white coat that looks like a cross of a lab coat and straight jacket, covered with blood stains. There is countless bottles and jars tied to and affixed to said jacket contains various bits of monster gore, floating eyes, brains, and skulls.

Agnomally's ok with attuning to figure it out- if everyone else is ok with a potentially cursed sorcerer. She will give her old staff (her focus) to one of the others while doing so, which should minimize the damage she can do. (She can still cast some serious stuff without it, though, be warned)

Everyone else, you can take a short rest while Agnomally tries to attune to the staff! You all notice the staff glowing a little brighter. It gives off 30 ft of pink light now.

Arthilas  is a young, tall high-elven guy with long, blonde hair and a very athletic, muscular body. Tattoos are covering his bare chest and arms, he is only wearing pants with some leg armor and a leather baldric  to strap a pair of shortswords to his back. In his hands, he holds a small, leather-bound book, which, as he has just  cast a spell from, you can identify as a spellbook, and a fancy-looking longsword with some runes inscribed on its slightly curved blade.

As the party settles down for a short rest, Arthilas asks Zuli "while we are waiting for Agnomally to attune to that staff, do you want to play a game of chess?"

Welcome! Agnomally is a gnome of short stature who exudes confidence and cheer. Though she is a gnome, there is something about her eyes that seems draconian.

Darklis seems uninterested in the chest for now. She's happy with her current weapon, if it were armor on the other hand, then she may decide to try it.

The amythest dragonborn stands back while the others mess with the chest. After putting her Flamburge back on her back, she crosses her arms and watches Agnomally attune to the item. She isn't sure she likes how unworried this group seems about the thing being potentially cursed. But then again, weren't they all already cursed? Shrugging, she sits down in a corner and takes advantage of the time to rest.
