(For a 32!!) Roll 4d8 = 4 + 2 + 4 + 8= 18
OK. To roll an 18 stat using 4d6 drop lowest ...
(4) x (1 x 1 x 1 x 6) / (6 x 6 x 6 x 6) = 1.85% on a single roll of the dice is the probability for getting an 18 for a stat with 4d6 drop lowest. Three of your rolls have to be 6s and the fourth one can be anything. In addition, the fourth die can occur in any of the 4 "positions" in the roll. It could be your first die, the second, or the third, or the fourth.
Figuring out a 17 using 4d6 drop lowest is more complicated.
The only way to get a 17 is to have an 6, another 6, a 5, and anything except another 6. In addition, the two non-6s can land anywhere in the "positions" so you have to factor that.
(2 x 6) x (1 x 1 x 1 x 5) / (6 x 6 x 6 x 6) = 4.63% on a single roll.
