 The puddles of liquid turn out to be puddles of warm blood, which drips from the ceiling of the cave...

 hold on, one thing at a time: You hit, and it produces a strange gurgling sound. You can move out of melee if you want, but it'll get an attack of opportunity. You need an action to pull out a match and light it, so you can't do that and attack on the same turn.

 that would count as getting out of melee, so if you don't want to get attacked, don't do that.
