While the surface of a comet is indeed cold, touching it with bare skin would cool you (as your heat would transfer to the surface). Furthermore, as they are entirely solid, comets do not have light inside of them.
If people are stumped I'll give the second half of the riddle, I originally omitted it as I thought it made it a bit too obvious.
It wouldn't happen to be space, by any chance, would it?
It would happen to be that indeed! Congratulations! (I would have also accepted black holes; although space is originally what I had in mind, I found that black holes would also answer the riddle correctly*)
Space is cold (cosmic microwave background is a balmy 2.7 Kelvin), but as a vacuum it is a great insulator. The only way you can lose heat in space is by radiation, which is why cooling things like probes and the space station is a challenge. Furthermore, while space allows light through it, it is not lit.
Black holes are even colder (based on hawking radiation at the event horizon), and contain light inside of the event horizon but are not lit from outside of it. However, I'm not so sure of the "won't cool you" part as there could be a large amount of particles swirling around in a black hole's event horizon, so the possibility to cool down via other means is possible. There's also the matter that the singularity itself is likely quite hot due to all of the collisions happening to it, although we cannot measure that for obvious reasons.
School seems like a good guess, I was going to say just Life as the cliche kind of answer, but if monastery was close I think you got it.

Whee. This one should probably be a bit easier. Probably.
I am cold but do not cool you. I have light but am not lit. What am I?
The moon?

No to all of the above, keep guessing!
Moon was closest to the correct answer.
A star?

Stars are neither cold nor unlit.
