My chromatic orb, up-cast from a 3rd level slot, just rolled a natural 20, critical hit doubles damage dice,
avg(10d8) is 10x4.5=45. 5 + 1 + 2 + 7 + 2 + 7 + 6 + 3 + 4 + 3 + = 40

If auto crit from a 3rd level slot is the name of the game, then I cast witch bolt from a up-cast 3rd slot, and auto-crit, doubling the damage dice of 4d12 into 8d12,
ave(8d12) is 8x6.5=52, 1 + 8 + 11 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 11 + 11 = 48

Oops, I just crit with guiding bolt, up-cast from a 3rd level slot. An auto-crit, doubling the damage dice of 6d6 into 12d6,
ave(12d6) is 12x3.5=42, 6 + 1 + 6 + 2 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 1 + = 37
I guess I should follow this up with the only other ranged spell in the new 5.5, melf's acid arrow which is 5d4 when cast from a 3rd level slot and doubles when crit with natural 20, to 10d4
ave(10d4) is 10x2.5=25, 3 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 23
