Sorry if this has already been discussed before, but shouldnt paladins choose their subclass at 1st level instead of 3rd? Alternativley, shouldnt they act more like a pure martial until they choose their oath at 3rd level?
Since a Paladin draws their divine power from upholding the tenets of their oath, how is it they get access to magical abilities like Lay on Hands and Spellcasting before they even choose their oath? Is it just general oaths to justice and righteousness?

I had not thought of the Mechanics why it would be ill-advised. I only thought story wise it allows the paladin player to begin at that stage where being a Squire is coming to an end and being made a real paladin begins, which could be a good story. Few players and DMs really grab onto the good story parts.

An explanation I heard somewhere was that level 1-2 you're preparing and training before actually making your oath at 3rd level, but not everyone would actuall RP it that way.

In rp terms, it makes a lot of sense.
But in practical terms, it means another class where a 1-level dip gives you a big boost in power.
