With Tomb of Annihilation, we were given the vastly unexplored land of Chult. A place teeming both with danger and treasure around every corner for our adventurers as we searched for the source of the "death curse". But what if Chult wasn't a peninsula? What if instead, it was a series of islands? What new dangers and treasures could be found? If you seek the answers, continue below but be warned as death awaits!
"Something evil has begun trapping the souls of the dead and draining life from all who have been raised from death by magic. This worldwide "death curse" not only prevents the raising of the dead but also causes those that were previously raised from the dead to wither and die.
The source of this "death curse" is rumored to originate within the vast archipelago of Chult. A widely unexplored group of islands shielded to the west, south, and east by a collection of reefs, unrelenting storms and sea monsters known collectively as the Dragon's Maw. A name largely earned due to its reputation for being the home to many dragon turtles, who's ravenous hunger for treasure is legendary within the Shining Sea.
But those dangers pale in comparison to what lies within Chults heart, an untamed wilderness of dense jungles, impassable mountains, and belching volcanoes. Where mighty reptilian beasts roam, undead armies march unchecked and cannibals lurk behind every shadow."
Story Overview
News of the "death curse" has spread far and wide. Whispers have even begun circulating that Syndra Silvane herself has been recruiting adventurers from all across Faerün, causing many to wonder if she too has been afflicted by it. While others suggest she's merely returned to her old ways, heroically trying to save the world once again. But you are not one of those adventurers, nor are you a hero…
Who are you?You are a crew member of the Maelstrom. A massive pirate ship that has made a name for itself in recent years up and down the Sea of Swords. (See: Character Sheet in Forms for more details.)
Race, Class & Background - Anything official is allowed, which includes tortles, grungs and albino dwarves from AL Surrogates. Homebrew or anything unofficial is not allowed. One exception: The Revised Ranger
Additional Background Character Level - In addition to whatever background you choose, you gain all benefits of the Sailor Background (or its Pirate variant).
Alignment - Any alignment is allowed except for Lawful Good. An exception can be made if you can explain a good reason for such a character being aboard a pirate vessel.
Hit Points - HP is based on the fixed value (the sum shown in parenthesis). So no rolling.
Ability Scores - Stats are determined byPoint Buy.
Character Level - Your characters begin at 3rd level.
Feats - Once available, feats are an option for your character.
Equipment - You start with any equipment given to you by your class and two backgrounds. (Note: Any gp gained from your backgrounds can be used to buy any armor, weapons or items found in the PHB prior to the campaign starting.)
Additional Equipment - After successfully seizing a merchant vessel named the Flying Dromos recently, you’ve earned 50 gp and 50 gp worth of treasure in addition to one common magic item found here. If you don’t have access to that material, PM me and I will give it to you. (Note: None of this can be sold or used to buy anything until you make it to Port Nyanzaru.)
What else do you have? As just mentioned above, the crew of the Maelstrom recently seized control over a merchant ship named the Flying Dromos. And after going through its crew and passengers, you not only gained the additional equipment listed above but also:
Transportation - The Flying Dromos is now the property of the Maelstrom and its crew. You count yourself as one of a few chosen to take it into Chult and discover its riches, as the Maelstrom is far too big for the shallow waters found within its heart.
A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing- As per your Admirals (formerly your Captain) orders, the crew of the Flying Dromos is to appear as its original crew. To that end, the players take the role of adventurers who were counted amongst its passengers. As such, while at Port Nyanzaru you maintain this false identity to avoid issues with the law. But once out in the unexplored waters of Chult, you can do as you please. (Note:You may draw the attention of pirate hunters and/or other pirates if your antics become “too loud” within Chult.)
An Unexpected Treasure - Normally a merchant vessel is a nice haul for any pirate and especially so when the ship in question is intact enough to be added to a fleet. But the Flying Dromos had a more valuable treasure on board than normal in the form of its adventurers and cargo. Resulting in your additional equipment as well as a map of Chult and letter from Syndra Silvane. With the letter itself addressing Wakanga O'tamu and her mission to stop the “death curse”.
Is there anything else you need to know?
Ship Battles & Cannons - As you might expect from this sort of campaign, you will participate in combat while aboard your ship. And as no ship combat is good without having cannons aboard, your vessel too will be equipped with them.
Underwater Exploration & Combat - The waters of Chult hold many mysteries, some of which are treasures and lost ruins. And when the time comes to explore those waters, you will be equipped with a diving bell. Which will allow for safer underwater exploration when the necessary spells and/or magic items aren't available.
Inspiration - Given good roleplay, cool ideas and other things I will give out inspiration. This will take the form of stackable non-renewable Luck Points. (Note: You can give your own points to other players if you so wish but it must be roleplayed in some fashion.)
Tools - I will be using the optional rules for tools found in XGtE. If you don’t have access to said material, PM me and I will give them to you.
Initiative - Initiative used will be Side Initiative. It entails one group of enemies rolling 1d20 + the groups highest DEX Mod and other group(s) doing the same. Whoever rolls highest will go first as a group, with each member of the group acting in whatever order they please. Followed by the next group and so on.
Character Death - If your character dies, new characters will be introduced (unless you have other ideas) via your Admiral replenishing your ranks. Though you will incur a penalty if you go through too many, so don't be reckless.
DM Availability - I will usually be available around 2 PM to 2 AM EST. If things change, I will let you not as soon as I can. And to keep things running smoothly, do try to post during that period of time if possible.
PbP Expectation - At least one post a day. If you cannot make it for one reason or another, give notice and your character will be controlled by me for the duration to keep the story moving along. If however you give no notice and it has been a day since your last post, I will assume control of your character until you return.
Player Removal - If you have remained absent for five days or more without any sort of notice, you will be removed and replaced by a new player.
Changes- At any point, I may change any of the above. If I do so I will be sure to give notice and my reasons for doing so. If you disagree with any of my rulings, explain why and I may very well change my mind. If I don’t however, my ruling will stand.

And you count yourself amongst this motley crew of misfits collected along the Sword Coast over the years. “I am sorry, but I am not sure I fully understand. This knife, you use it to reduce food to a smaller form. Why does one not simply swallow it? Furthermore, if you cannot swallow it, then you likely have no business hunting it.” Anglos gestures to the cutlery and a whole chicken on a table.
"Shiver me timber's, Anglos. Better avast ye, afore ya hurt someone." Tanne grabs the cleaver from Anglos' hand. "Yonder fish bones if swallowed, could make me feed the fish myself."

Tanne and Anglos approach the large shipment still being loaded on the deck from the recently seized merchant ship. There are several barrels and crates before you, with some crates already opened and revealing there contents. Both of you see a collection of magic items in the four opened crates.
OOC: Which crate do you all choose to acquire a magic item from? The crates are side by side in a row.
Zradhall stands at the bow of the ship, giving one last look at the seemingly endless expanse of waves before going to join the celebration, grabbing a mug of ale and some leg of meat he couldn't identify. He hears an excited voice shouting something about treasure. He wanders around, not striking conversation, unsure of what to do other that eat.

In the galley food is currently being prepared en masse for the current shift of sailors who just came off duty. Rapid slicing, stirring, simmering, and cursing reverberate throughout. A plate topped with chicken, greens, and beans wobbles and begins to topple, and just as quickly an invisible Mage Hand steadies the plate and adjusts the placement to a more sturdy location. A Gnome with black hair peppered with gray dashes back to his station, yelling to those in the vicinity, "Oy! Be careful where you lot are placing the dishes. Cap'n only has so many sets of dishes and we ain't gettin' new ones way out here. Unless you wanna eat off the floor," Tea eyes a Half-Orc sternly, "and I don't, please be more careful!" As Tea Twospoons hustles back and forth getting meals ready, using his Mage Hand to shake a little spice into this dish and stir that pot across the room, his ears perk up at an accent booming across the galley: Perception: 21
Tea laughs to himself at the accent. Clearly someone has been learning about the pirate life from too many tall tales. He continues to busily prepare food.
As the galley hands wind down for a while, the current meal prep completed and the pots cleaned, Tea wipes his hands on his apron. His hand comes away still smudged with grease and spices and he wrinkles his brow. Tea scurries over to a pot of warm water and dips his hands in, rubbing away the remains of the evenings food preparation. He finds a spot on a relatively clean towel and dries his hands. Tossing the apron into a basket to be cleaned by the laundry crew, he heads up to the deck to observe the haul the crew brought in from the Flying Dromos.
On deck Tea leans against the rail of the ship, watching as other crew members sift through the treasure.
OOC: It wasn't completely clear, but it was just the two (Tanne and Anglos) who are choosing items from the crates correct? Or are we all supposed to be picking a crate?

Titus grabs a mug of ale and congratulates his fellow crew members on the successful raid, “A fine days work!” He shouts as he raises his glass to the crew “To the Maelstrom and her fiercesome crew, those poor bastards over in Chult won’t know what hit ‘em if we can keep this up!”
The men raise their glasses as a roar rises up from the crowd, some start drumming on the their tables and stamping their feet on the deck. He downs whats left in his mug and fills another before making his way across the room, complimenting the most impressive of his comrades with a slap on the back, or by clanking glasses.
