You are all experienced adventurers of some sort or another. You have traveled from afar, hearing rumors, or recieving requests, to come to this place. It is a little out-of-the-way village, barely even a blip on any map of the area. The village is Stag Crossing. It has no inn, no tavern, only honest farming folk who have gathered into a small community beside their fields.
Upon arrival you are told of a strange tunnel that recently opened up near the town. The farmers tell you that no one who has gone in has ever come out again. They also say that livestock has gone missing, with tracks leading back to the tunnel mouth.
You have been requested, as a group of powerful adventurers, to venture into this tunnel, find out who, or what, is down there, and, if possible, return with the lost villagers.
You find yourself standing at the top of a slope that leads down into darkness. It is early morning, with dew clinging to the plants nearby. You can each describe your character now and decide how you move forward.
A pale, blue-eyed dhampir kneels on the dewy grass, surveying the area. He closes his eyes and faces upwards, as though listening to the wind, before opening his eyes again. "Where's the tunnel?" So'ui questions, addressing no one in particular.

A old, grey-haired tiefling, wearing priest's clothes, looking in the direction of the darkness before him. He was stroking his beard, with his crossbow in hand "Well, looks like we stand before him" the tiefling says, pointing at the darkness "We better hurry, those missing villagers may be in danger"
a small, pale green skinned creature with piercing orange eyes, and an expression that seems like he is lost in though approaches the tunnel. he wears armor made of leather and covered in small metal pieces to add protection. a wand is stored behind is ear where normally a pencil would be. he has practicals on, and is looking through them at a piece of paper, muttering words while walking. attached to him all across his body at small clockwork contraptions, and at his waist you see two small flasks. the overall look of him is that of an eccentric mad scientist who added to much magic into his science.
hearing the dhampir talk, he looks around startled for an instant, before seeing the others. "you broke my concentration there, sir. before we enter this rather.... eh, dangerous place, I'd like to test out one of my new contraptions on some of you. who wants to be hard to kill?" the goblin says in a whiny, high-pitched voice. he grins nastily, before pulling his wand out, and beginning to tinker with a clockwork device attached him.
Alaster runs his hand gently over his tool belt feeling for his equipment but eventually settles it on a small metal rod. Pulling the rod from his belt and giving it a click, it extends out from both ends to become a much larger, almost staff-like, rod. With his other hand, he reaches back and presses a button on the side of his armor causing it to fold outwards in the back. With a click, the extra folds detach from the armor and the half-elf pulls it off and into his hand. "Villagers, smillagers." Alaster says mockingly, "I'm sure that whoever or whatever is down there is loaded and I just want a piece of the action." With his Boomstick in one hand and Blast Shield in the other, the artificer raises his eyebrows at the others, and will go in after at least one other person goes ahead.

The brown-haired man looked at the half-elf in disgust. "Those are innocent people in there, and you're more concerned with lining your pockets than stopping whatever in Tiamet's name is down there. That's someone's mother, someone's son, someone's friend," he spat, his piercing blue eyes glistening with anger. He looked down the hill, searching the area for any signs of life.

Lean and wiry by dwarven standards, Tydir Stoneheart was dressed in muted tones, grays and blacks. All the metalwork - from the buckles on his boots to the intricately engraved half-plate armor he wore to the haft of his Warhammer - was carefully finished so it gave off no shine whatsoever. His heavy woolen cloak was well-worn and salt-stained, having stood countless watches and storms.
'Standing 'ere won't do anything for anyone that's for certain. Only one way to get this done.' Swinging his shield off his back and tucking it up under his eyes, the cleric enters the tunnel, ready for whatever threats they may encounter.
(Just an FYI it is dark down here, so, if you don't have darkvision, you will need a light.)
Arcana 15 and above would recognize the runes as ones of protection and abjuration, but you can't tell much more than that with an arcana check.
If you use your character sheet roller then just make sure to put the results in a post here, and what sort of result it is for. I knew the above were Arcana already, but making sure that is included in the post going forward would be nice. Also try to associate names with your posts as well, as often as you can, as I might not know which player is which character all of the time. If you put your character name in your post, then it is clear.

Skarias looked at the small goblin "oh, sorry little one, i didn't hear you, well i would like to partake in your experiment, if it's not a bother"
Alaster responds, "I suppose if you need another subject, I would be willing to attempt it. Although we really shouldn't wait around."

Alaster takes a closer look at the symbols as they walk by.

So'ui stands by the door, surveying the symbols. "Anybody recognize these?"
