It is a late morning, and you are nearing your destination. Each one of you boarded the ship at different ports but you all share the same destination The small town of Saltmarsh located on the southern shore Q'barra peninsula. In the centuries past, the voyage would take several weeks, but for Zephyr, the state of the art ship of the house Lyrandar, the journey takes just a few days even in the pleasant windless weather like today.
House Lyrandar skyship (there are not many pictures of their seaships, but they look similar) with the elemental ring that serves as a propulsion.
As your ship finally reaches one of the town's piers, the ship captain, an older half elf wearing a Lyrandar uniform picks a small stone that is lying near the ship's helm. As he speaks into the stone, his voice can be heart all over the ship: We are nearing the port of Saltmarsh. If you end your journey here, please remain on board until the ship fully stops and elemental ring is disabled. On behalf of house Lyrandar, I thank you for using our service and wish you a pleasant stay at your destination. Those of you who continue their journey with us, please remain on board, the ship will leave shortly.
Only one additional passenger leaves the ship here. A mid aged half orc, dressed in a clean dark leather vest with an expensive short-sleeved white shirt. On his head he wears a large round hat with blue feather. When you look carefully, you can see a strange mark on his arm. He looks around and nods at you. I wasn't expecting some many people coming here says he and laughs when he looks at you. Anyway, I should get to work and the best way to start is always the local Inn. And as he says that he lifts his hat in a salute and leaves.
As you party looks around, you can see just a normal day in the town: Few humans preparing their fish nets, a lone warforged covered with barnacles repairing a boat, a few market stands here and there selling mostly fish and clams. Most of the buildings you see are made of wood except with a few, mostly larger building being made of stone.
A map of Saltmarsh (please check the compass, North in not where you would expect it). You party stand on one of the piers near #15
Please briefly describe your characters and decide, what will the party do.
As the half orc leaves then a halfling in a wide rim brown leather hat steps off after him. He walks down the gangplank slowly, pack hanging from one shoulder and one hand clasping the other behind his back. He looks much younger than the old-man-walk he is is trying to emulate would suggest. He stops right at the bottom of the gangplank and narrows his eyes and steps aside when he hears footsteps behind him.
He raises his eyebrows as three others step off and nods to each of them as they pass, "Welcome to Saltmarsh. The inn is that way," as he gestures towards the half orc that just left.
(That's an evil way to make a map, not gonna lie.)
Mydri steps down from the ship with her pack on her back and her trident in her hands. It is strange, perhaps, but you haven't seen her without it. Her gaze doesn't fall on anything in particular as she stands for a moment, appreciating the steady ground under her feet. Besides, she needs to digest the amount of Half-Elves she had just met. On a single ship - more than her entire life, she thinks. She can't remember much, but that is the feeling she has.
The Half-Elf standing there is 5' 9" tall, pale-skinned and with straight, long silvery hair. Her eyes are grey. She wears simple clothes, under which there is a suit of Scale Mail armour, noticeable by the sound of the metal striking against metal as she walks. If you noticed during the trip, you already know she's a quiet one. Not to say she's shy, she's just introverted. The pack on her back looks like a normal pack you'd see any traveller carrying, and her trident looks like a normal fishing trident.
Mydri looks at her left hand for a few moments, specifically at her ring finger that stands for its name and has a ring on it. The ring is simple - silver with a small gem embedded into it. She then lowers her hand and raises her head and starts walking towards the inn as the Halfling gestured. If the Half-Orc is right and she could find a job there, that would be great. The little amount of money she took when she left her house will not hold forever. Besides, she still doesn't quite know what to do. At the very least, it looks like it's safe here.
Zuri passes by Frank and nods back at him with a little smile.
She is still quite a young halfling women with tanned skin and messy red hair with a few braids with beads. She is wearing a dress that was sawn together from different fabrics and animal hides on which she has a very worn out leather armor. You can also see a scimitar at her side and a few accesories made of animal teeth.
She turns around to see the ship they were just on, still impressed by the technology and size of the machine she was just traveling on. Who new she would ever travel on such a thing? After few moments she follows the others to the nearby inn to gather her thoughts and decide whats next.
The smartly dressed young man carries his overly heavy bags onto land with some difficulty. He is slightly out of breath as he stops to look around at the small town they have arrived at. More of an overgrown village really to his city-born eyes.
He picks up the bag again and makes his way with the others to the tavern, the only hospitable place he expects to find in a place like this.
Frank looks back at the ship and seeing nobody else embark he waves "Adios!" to it and follows the others, keeping an eye out for anyone who might be looking at them or following them.
As you watch the Half orc leave the pier, you can see him heading to one of the nearby buildings ((#13 on the map)). As you approach the building you can see it is made up of differently coloured wooden planks originating from several decommissioned ships. Above the entrance hangs a faded shield with the name "The Snapping Line Tavern".
The insides of the tavern are unsurprisingly decorated in a nautical themes, with fishing nets hanging from the ceiling and ships' wheels on the walls. A strong scent of fish hits your noses as you enter. Behind the bar stands a mid-aged halfling woman and two massive human males sit at the table on the side of the bar. At one of the other tables you can see the Half Orc you've met earlier, surrounded by a bunch of locals engaged in a discussion. A lone man sits at another table, on the first glance you can tell he is a bit shaken and is currently occupied by his mug of ale. The rest of the tables are currently unoccupied.
Mydri enters the tavern, but she's not sure what to do. It's not a place she'd go to often, she feels. There's a vague memory of... Thami, dragging her to one of the taverns. "You have to try it, at least once. I want to see how you are when you drop all your defences!" And then, the memory is cut. Mydri tries, but she can't remember any further. She realises she is blocking the door and steps forward. "Sorry, I doze off." She tells the man (to Gethin). Not sure what to look for, Mydri scouts the walls for anything that says "JOBS!" or at least hints about them. If she cannot find anything like that, she'll come closer to the Half-Orc, though not approach him directly, and try to hear what he's saying.
Frank walks in and quickly checks everyone out. He then heads to the restroom and comes back almost immediately. He walks up to the bar and slides a pieces of what seems like a folded-in-half piece of toilet paper to the halfling woman behind the bar. "I'm Frank, nice to meet you. Can you get this piece of paper and an refill to the lonely guy there?" As he points to the "a bit shaken and occupied with ale" guy. He slides 3 silver across the counter. "One for me as well please." He jumps on a barstool, leans back against the bar and openly observes what happens next.
As you move inside the tavern the bartender notices you. Ah a more new faces in the town. Name's Hanna. Welcome to The Snapping Line... and Saltmarsh too!
John would you please? Says she to one of the two men sitting nearby and nods towards a metallic box with several levers placed in the corner of the room. John walks up to the box pulls a few levers on the side of the box and a catchy sea shanty start playing in the tavern.
Happy about the music, she turns back to Frank. Ok Ale for Ole Ron and one for you mr. Frank. I must warn you though, he isn't feeling well today. She leans closer to you and lowers her voice He's been skulking around that old abandoned house west of Saltmarsh again. People say it's haunted but I think he just goes there so he can rob the local wine cellar and then spread the rumors back here. If he starts to bother you too much, just say so and I'll deal with him. With that she switches back to her previous voice. Anyway, would you like some food too? We have a great lobster stew today!
And what about you lady...? Says she to Mydri. May I get you something?
@Mydri You can't hear too much from the conversation, due to the music and the conversation between Hanna and the others, but form the fragments of the conversation it appears that the Half Orc is describing something called dragonshards to the locals.
((Ok, I must admit I am not sure what exactly you want her to do with the paper (get rid off it? )))
Strange, no one seems to be bothered by a Half-Elf here. Not that she can notice, anyway. Her thoughts are interrupted by the Halfing, and Mydri takes an awkwardly long moment to answer. "Umm... that lobster stew, perhaps?" Mydri says in a soft, dreamy mezzo-soprano voice. She takes her backpack off and opens it, taking out the money she has left. "How much should I pay you?"
After she pays, Mydri walks back to one of the unoccupied tables and sits next to it. Whatever it was the Half-Orc was talking about, it didn't sound like a fast way to get some coin for food and lodging. While she waits, her trident now lying on her hips, Mydri reaches into her pack and takes out a few papers and just looks at them sadly. You may have spotted her doing so several times during the joint ride on the Zephyr.
Hearing the sound of the music, Zuri walks closer to the bar, looking for whatever is making such a nice sound. But She is interupted by the smell of a dish that Is just being served to Mydri at a nearby table. "Can I have some of that as well please?" She says as she sits down next to Mydri. "Can I sit with you? You keep looking at those papers with such a sad expression, so I thought you might like some company. B-but if you would rather be alone I can sit somwhere else."
Mydri quickly hugs the papers so that Zuri doesn't get a chance to see them. She squints for a moment, but then softens and untightens her hands. She straightens the papers before carefully inserting them back into her pack. "No, it's okay. It's not my table, after all." There's some awkward silence while Mydri looks at the Halfling, not sure what to say. When she does speak, eventually, she's a bit hesitant. "But you don't have to sit next to me if I spoil your mood. I think someone told me one should be happy in a tavern, right?" She tries to smile, but it's quite clear it's fake. On the other hand, she doesn't look as sad anymore. It's awkward again, now that Mydri really doesn't know what to say, but she keeps looking at the Halfling.
Zuri gets a little startlet when Mydri quickly hides her papers, and decides to rather not ask about them. "Don´t worry about it, I don´t think you are going to spoil anything and if one should be happy in a tavern then you should be too, right?" She says as she looks up at Mydri who is almost twice her height. Zuri was glad she smiled even if there was still some sadness behind it. Not wanting the silence to get any more akward she asks: "The music in here is nice, but where is it coming from? I don´t see anyone playing or singing in the tavern."
"What? Yes, it's okay. I think one of the guys near the bar pulled a lever on this box right there just before it activated, so maybe from there? I could be wrong though, it doesn't look familiar." Mydri appreciates the one in front of her. She was making an effort for her, it was obvious, but Mydri doesn't know what to say. Meeting new people... she's not great at that. "I... think I saw you back at the ship, am I correct?" She eventually decides to ask, it seemed like a good question.
(( Frank wanted one of the servers (he assumes there is one who carries food/drinks to the table) to take the piece of paper to the guy sitting alone. But as that didn't happen then he will continue without this part. This is a perfect example of Frank trying to do stuff and it not working out as he imagined it would :) ))
Frank nods as Hanna talks about stuff. "Oh so the haunted abandoned house is also the local wine cellar? I'll take some drink and food to him and see if I can make him feel better. One stew for me as well please." (and he pays for two ale + two stew with some extra for tip, like 50% extra)
He takes one ale and one stew and carries it over to Ole Ron. He then retrieves his own food and drink and sits down across from him. "Frank. You must be Ole Ron. Nice to meet you. The food and ale is on me, you look like you could use some of that and good company." And he starts eating.
"Yes, on the ship, we were traveling together for a while." She says and then lookes back at the box, still not understanding how can it be making music. "But I guess we never really talked with each other. I am Zuri by the way. Is it your first time here in Saltmarsh too?"
Well the house belonged to some alchemist a few decades ago and even then people tried to avoid the house because of the man's reputation. But it's been abandoned since then. There are quite a few rumors about the house. Many people claim that the alchemist tried to turn stuff into gold and other similar crazy stuff. Now the Ole Ron came with the ghosts idea but as I said it hink he just found some storage of booze or something. Anyway, I Always thought, the house would make a nice Inn. With that she passes you the ale It will be 1 silver per mug and 3 silver per the bowl of stew. Says she and brings the food and ale to Ron.
As you join the Ron, he looks a bit confused at first but when you mention the free stuff, his mood improves dramatically. Thank ye ser. What did I do ta desserve this?
((Sorry about the paper, now it makes sense. I kinda misunderstood what you meant at first.))
@ Zuri, Mydri
Hanna brings you two bowls of stew and some bread and puts it in front of you on the table. There's a pleasent scent of herbs and vegetable coming from the stew, and when you start eating the lobster tastes delicious. Enjoy the meal, If you want some more bread, just ask. She hesitates for a brief moment and continues If you don't mind me asking you look like adventurers?. When you are done eating I might have a small errand for you. With that she leaves you to your meal and returns to bar ((I'll wait a bit to give Gethin chance to join)).

Frank hands over a gold for the food and drink for two people.
He replies to Ron, "You accepted me at your table, that is all. I am new here and if everyone is as nice as you then this indeed is a very nice town."
He tastes the stew and waits for Ron to start eating as well.
Frank continues, "Food is doing good for you. When I walked in you looked like you've seen a ghost. What troubles you?"
