Nestled between the Lands End mountains to the north, the Kingdom of Lariket to the south, the Sea of Synod to the East and the Forest of Wistful Dreams to the west, lies the region known as the Northlands. An idyllic green expanse of farms, forests and dells. Life here is simple, and has been as long as even any elf can remember. Technically a fiefdom of Lariket, it has largely been forgotten by the kingdom as it has little wealth to offer. The Northlands regional capital of Klaytowne lies on the coast of the Sea of Synod, just outside of the primary lands of Lariket. Klaytowne is the social, learning and industrial center for the region. Further up along the coast you will find the town of Port Wolcott, the de facto military center of the land, due to the ongoing conflict with the orcs of the Great Plains to the northwest. The Borderlands Keep is the advanced post and sees almost daily skirmishes, but this war has been at a stalemate for well over a decade. Near the center of the Northlands is the town of Carlisle, a crossroads between the east and west. North of Carlisle, you will find Moorsedge, a small village on the edge of the swamps of Greymere consisting mostly of farmers. To the west, just outside of the Forest of Wistful Dreams is the city of Westerville, which is the logging capital of the region. Between Westerville and Carlisle you may find the Shire in its hidden copse, as well as the dwarven fortress of Undercity tucked into the Lands End.
This is the life into which you have been born. Simple, unexciting, common. You have worked since you were very young, gathering skills where you could find a teacher, hoping for a life more interesting. You have saved enough money for arms and a travel pack of supplies, now if only an opportunity would come along, you could leave this place in search of adventure. But today dawns, like every other, and off to work you go ...
If I have sparked your interest, then perhaps we can write a story together.
But first, allow me to introduce myself. I am an old (literally) vanilla AD&D player/DM returning to the game after a long hiatus, and looking to bring some of my favorite material back into play, modified and revamped for the new era.
For this campaign, please plan on a new character (level 1), point buy system preferred (I like having weaknesses in characters for them to overcome), fixed HPs, and I am requiring any GOOD alignment (due to the nature of the lands, and the planned direction for many of the future options), and please keep to the common races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling) unless you can provide an appropriate backstory for another race. Character classes will currently be limited to those in the Player's Handbook (this will likely be expanding later).
Advancement will be XP based, with rewards for combat as well as good role playing. If this offering is well received, I intend to continue the campaign for the characters clear through 20th level. Likewise, if this proves fun for all involved, I will be more than happy to start additional groups.
Still interested? Please send PM with your proposed character name, race, class and brief backstory. I will be looking to move forward within the next couple of days.
We currently have a crew of 7-8, so closing recruitment at this time. Still working out a few details with a couple of players, but expecting to get rolling within 24 hours.

Hammond Onc, played DarthDrizzt. Once a noble house of Lariket, the Onc family has had much of its lands usurped and so now reside in Carlisle working toward better times.
Bartholomew Gale, played by cpotter21. Cast out of his aerie in the Lands End, Bartholomew has found some acceptance working in the taverns of Klaytowne.
Your day starts out, much like every other. Daily routine, while sometimes comforting, can also be boring when there is a fire in your soul and you know there is something more to be seen, to be done, to be experienced. But maybe it is just an illusion, and there really isn't anything more than surviving day to day until it just ends.
Nahhh....there HAS to be more! But will it be for you, or just for someone else?
Distracted and lost in your thoughts, you haven't been paying as much attention as maybe you should ...
EVERYONE: Roll a perception check.

(Character portrait)
(Also, part of me is cringing but I was super excited to finally play Kina and have to share my character portrait of her. Yis, this my work and I'm thrilled to finally be a player after many years of DMing. Not an ad, just excited.)
Having just finished a very rousing, and very drunken, ballad, you step out back to catch your breath and mentally review the last set. You take a few steps back and forth in the alley, mentally replaying the chords and melody on your "air lute" when a sudden footfall just ahead of you brings you out of your reverie. You look up to see a robed figure wearing a mask decorated with a sunburst. Another noise to your left causes you to glance over and see a second figure, but this one wearing a crescent moon mask instead. Puzzled, curious and cautious, you are just about to speak when a sharp pain explodes up the back of your neck and sends lances of blinding white light through your brain. And the world goes dark ....
Wilhorn:
For the past two hours you have been tracking the stag through the fringes of the Forest of Wistful Dreams, never getting a clear shot. Finally! The stag is slowly coming out into an open spot, head down and grazing. However, just as you nock an arrow and draw, his head snaps up, looking not at you, but to your right and he bolts deeper into the wood. Looking to your right to see if you can determine what startled him, you notice a robed and masked figure sliding through the shadows toward you. Before you can bring your bow to bear, a twig snaps directly behind you and something solid connects with the back of your head causing flashes of lights and then darkness descends ...
Chesterfield:
Your next mark in your sights, you have been following him, waiting for the right opportunity to lighten his purse. He turns down a side street where the crowds thin enough that you can finally get a little closer. Just as you are about to make your move, he quickly steps into an alley, and picks up his pace. Shadows dance everywhere as the sun is beginning to set, so you feel you can continue to follow him safely. Being younger and more agile, you are closing the gap as he slips around a corner, but when you get there, it is not the merchant you see, but a robed figure blocking your path. A second figure appears to your left, blocking that avenue of escape. Ever resourceful, you look up to find a way out, and as your legs tense to leap, a hand grips your shoulder and a solid thud tells of something solid connecting to the side of your head as your ears ring and vision fades ...
Hammond:
After a long day of studies, you decide to venture to the local tavern for a drink and hopefully catch the performance of one of the local bards. The sun is low in the sky as you near your destination and hear a rather energetic sound coming from inside. "I'm in luck, they have a performer tonight!" you think, and head inside. A couple of hours, and a few drinks later, tensions eased, you head out and back towards home. As you near the edge of town, you notice a robed figure step out of the shadows off to your right, moving in your direction. You feel a twinge of concern when you notice the sunburst mask covering his face. Just as you consider whether to pick up your pace, turn back, or stand and fight, a second figure steps out in front of you. Options dwindling, you bring your hand up and prepare to cast, when suddenly your arms go numb and vision fades ...
Cade:
Traveling from the Shire to Westerville was peaceful, almost dull. Beautiful scenery, but few travelers. The few days your spent in Westerville talking with the locals, learning of the legends of the deep forests, however, were quite thrilling, as everyone advised to avoid the depths of the woods. Exploration more than a few hundred yards into the forest has never ended well. Those few who do manage to return are changed, maddened, delusional. Hoping to find out more, you head out in the morning to see the Forest of Wistful Dreams for yourself. After all, what could really happen? Heading for one of the nearby logging camps, you expect another solitary day of travel, and just around noon, you see a figure coming down the road towards you, walking slowly, head bowed. You call out in greeting, but no response. As the figure gets closer, it raises its head, and you see a sunburst mask covering his face. A noise from the tall grass across the road also catches your attention as a second robed figure emerges. You take a defensive step back, and begin looking around for a way out, or at least where you can keep them in front of you, something solid strikes you from behind sending you sprawling into the dirt, as everything suddenly goes dark ...
Kina:
"What a beautiful day it is today," you think, as you head out for Carlisle. Your sensei has asked you to retrieve a few items for him there that are not available in the Shire. As you make your way down the forested road out of the town, you hear a twig snap in the trees to your right. Looking about, you notice the robed figure approaching from a little further down the road, and a second moving out from behind a tree where you heard the sound. The one of the road wears a mask styled like a sunburst, while the second looks like a crescent moon. Unable to read their expressions because of the masks, their movements give little doubt that you are what they seek, and you look for a means of escape, or a place to defend yourself. That is when you see a third, wearing a mask of the full moon coming from behind. The two on the road are about 35-40' away. The third, coming out of the woods, is only 20' away. Your move.

Kina notices that she's in the process of being surrounded, but given she has nothing on her of any real value, she stops dead in her tracks.
"Awfully... festive looking outfits you have, fellows. I think you might have the wrong centaur to be putting on dramatics like this, I've just got some medicinal herbs on me. They're not even fresh!" she says, showing her hands in a gesture that shows she's not a threat. "We don't have to make this any harder than it has to be, all right? I'm not looking for trouble." she adds. She's standing her ground, waiting for the three to make their move. She doesn't want to hurt anyone unless she has to, but she half-turns herself towards the figure approaching from behind all the same.
Kina: The figures continue to close, attempting to maneuver so that at least one is approaching from behind. Steel sings as they each draw a pair of weapons, a scimitar and what would best be described as a weighted leather sheath. They seem to be chanting something that you cannot quite catch the words.

This sounds fun. One question, for the backstory, do you want us to be commoners/have some adventuring background/be adventurers currently in town?
