I Seeing if anyone fancies a PbP game based around the Lost Mine of Phandelver, but I’m going to try running it as a mission for a group of mercenary guild (The Bannered Blades) members. If we got through that and wanted to continue, I’d homebrew or find some other sword coast quests. It’d be my first time DMing, but I’ve read things through a few times so I’m fairly confident that I’d know what I’m doing (famous last words, I’m sure!).
You don’t need to be experienced, or a complete newbie, all levels of confidence and experience are welcome. It’d be nice to have people who can post once or twice a day 4/5 days of the week. I like to keep formatting simple, so speech will be bold and in a colour specific for player characters, description of what your character is doing can stay in basic text and out of character text - like rolls, questions to me/you, official actions etc - would be in brackets, eg.
Kas says, Die you monster and blast them with a beam of eldritch energy (agonising eldritch blast).
Stats can be standard or rolled for and we’ll be using milestone xp cause then you don’t have to worry about tracking it.
if you are interested, drop me a PM or a message in the thread letting me know a little about your character idea and a little about you. Character ideas should include race, class and a bit of background that might explain why they joined the Bannered Blades. A little about you should include experience you have (though it won’t count for or against you), what type of player you are/what you like in a game (if you know), how often you’d be able to post and a rough age (I’m not asking for specifics! I’d just need to know if you are technically a minor so I can moderate a little if needed). If you want to add any other info, that’s fine too.
A little about me: I’ve recently started playing DnD myself and currently playing in a couple of PbP games as I haven’t got a guaranteed time slot week in, week out to play a weekly session. I’ve made the decision to have a go at DMing because I’m enjoying those games and know that there are more players than DMs a lot of the time. DMing a game I’ve got source material for is my way of seeing if DMing is something I like doing and learning how things work for a homebrew campaign idea I’ve had.
I’ll try to answer any questions that are posted in the thread as quickly as possible.
edit: whoa! So many responses! Thanks! I’m going to leave this open a little longer to try and get enough for two roughly equal groups. I’m recording currently interested characters and players so that anyone new who’s interested knows what bases are already covered (not that I’m against two characters of the same class being in the same group, it just might allow for some gaps to be plugged - although I’ve got a bit of an idea for plugging one hole anyway as an experiment). Some of these are subject to change, I will try to keep it updated.

I've played through Lost Mine of Phandelver before (up to a certain point only, I think chapter 2 or something). How different are you thinking of making this story?
And what are the philosophies and values of the mercenary guild?
It’ll be a little different, same basic quests to start off with while I’m learning. I’m hoping to change a few bits as I get more confident with it. As for the guild, in my head they work like the guilds in the anime Fairy Tail, it’s basically a place for regulated mercenaries, so they operate within laws but without the paperwork and structure of a guard system (who in my head are always more police-like). The guild organises caravan guards or bodyguards for merchants and the like, if they ask for the service and takes a cut (kind of like an agency does in real life). Members are given, or select jobs to do (depending on their standing within the guild) based on the jobs people are paying for, they are not officially employees and are paid only when a job is completed - except in very rare cases where a down-payment is made. While they are meant to operate within laws, the Bannered Blades operates a somewhat lax approach, if you get the job done, they don’t ask questions, but they also wash their hands of you if you get caught doing something you shouldn’t, if that makes sense.

Xanaphia Nailo: Level 4 Warlock, Grey Hands PbP.
Ellara Nightflower: level 1 blood hunter, Curse of Strahd
Koga being an Elf of Aerenal answers to the Undying Council. He has been tasked with eradicating evil. And has realized being an isolationist -- as this sect of elf typically is -- that will only get him so far in his quest. Before setting out The Undying Council conducted a ritual on Koga that he does not remember he just from time to time realizes some of his powers.

Out of curiosity, as I don’t have access to everything, which expansion is Koga based on? His task will probably fit in well with a few things, I can already think of some.

I will work on the details for my character if I am selected for this adventure, but here’s a summary I’m thinking of:
Lavandula Angustia – Tiefling Rogue (Arcane Trickster), with a criminal/spy background, focusing more on the spy aspect (so I would be a spy for the Mercenaries not spying on the Mercenaries), usually the infiltrator or information gatherer when it comes to missions. I was raised in a group of thieves (I'm open to any existing groups, or just make up my own name for the brigands), but I lost the love of my life (Daisy Angustia, I took her name in her memory because I had no family name at birth) through a “thief squabble” and it made me realize how bad things are.. and decided to work for making the world a better place, by using my knowledge and contacts in the underworld.
About me: I’ve played some and DMed for other rpg systems, but never been much further than lvl 4-5 in D&D, mainly because I struggle getting a schedule to work IRL games in.. and that’s why I’ve finally decided to give PbP a try! I can definitely post daily! And I’m in it for the fun of making a good story (good rolls and bad rolls equally make good stories!! A good balance between RP and encounters as well). In my late twenties, no censuring required for me!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
I'm new to this D&D Beyond and 5E too, however I played 3,5 ed in PbP a couple of years ago.
I'll make a non magical char maybe a melee type. I can post every day however I live in europe so I probably post about 8 hours before anyone in US east coast. Unless I'm up at night like now :)
Background; Born in Sagel, a small village at the top of a hill down at the coast. The village live in peace with a tribe of giants who claim the whole hilly area as theirs. There were some trade with the tribe as their hills was between Sagel and the coast, mostly fish and crabs traded for bread and fruits. This was the land that Talen grew up in. Talen has four older brothers and they were always friendly fighting each others as brothers often do. This family were one of the few people in Sagel who weren't farmers but soldiers. With goblin tribes plaguing the area there were alot to do for this family of fighters and that's what Talen wanted to do, fighting bandits. He wants to explore the world and so think that perhaps The Bannered Blades are the right guild for that, for now.
