*** Recruitment will be open until this Sunday @ 10:00 PM, CST. ***
PRELUDE
You wake up in a rather wretched inn. It was the cheapest you could find. You consider leaving five copper pieces as a tip, but… you end up leaving two. As you head for the front door, the innkeeper calls to you. He is an aged dragonborn with thick spectacles and a gnarled pipe that wraps thick clouds around his head. You try to politely hold your breath as he speaks.
"You wanted to know if there was work to be had, eh? Well, there's someone down by the docks looking to hire private muscle for something or other. Word is, he's paying in gold..."
He points a claw at a new advert on the notice board. It reads:
"HELP WANTED! Seeking capable guards for the transport of private cargo from Neverwinter to Phandalin. Low risk. Interviews to be had at "The Fiddlecat Pub" from 18th-22nd of this month. Speak with Gundren Rockseeker or Sildar Hallwinter, for more information."
"REWARD: 10 gold pieces, to be paid upon safe delivery."
It may be worth your time. You thank the innkeeper and step out into the fresh air and busy streets of Neverwinter.

GREETING
Hail and well met, all!
My name is Petessius, but call me Pete. I'm going to take a stab at the tried and true, beginner-friendly adventure "Lost Mine of Phandelver". I am looking for a party of four perilous persons that can band together and take on the dangers in and around the rundown town of Phandalin. (If alliteration or assonance annoys you, I… I'm sorry. It's how I think. I need help. You are also in very real danger of a pun or two.)
GENERAL INFORMATION
Game: D&D 5e (play-by-post)
Group type: Online, asynchronous, played in Forum
Experience: No experience necessary! New players welcome!
Location/Time zone: Online. I am in CST (UTC-6). So long as you can post when you are expected to, you could be posting from Mars for all I care. (Elon, is that you?)
Number of roles sought: Four (4)
Game style: Balance between roleplay, combat, and exploration.
Rating: PG-13/mild R?. If it wouldn't appear in The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or a Marvel movie, we will avoid it. There may be mass-slaughter of entire armies, but let's be tasteful with it. Any extreme depictions will be fade-to-black.
Posting schedule: at least once every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (M-W-F). I want to shoot for posting daily, but let's be reasonable. If keeping this schedule becomes a recurring issue, we will part as unlikely friends and I will reopen recruitment.

Avoid MIN-MAXing. (Sir Minimus Maximus shall be shunned! Glorious though they may be, not my cup of tea.)

DESCRIPTION: All backgrounds allowed. Homebrew is allowed upon review.

And now for something a little different...

The Interview
You are at a table with Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter. Gundren is a well-dressed dwarf with a bushy red beard. He offers you a tankard of Allsummer Ale, a refreshing drink, and thanks you for answering his job notice. Sildar appears to be a seasoned human warrior, judging by the longsword and shield slung over his chair. He holds a ledger with the names of other applicants and many, many notes. He looks you over with a critical eye and prepares to write.
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Answer #1. (your description)
Gundren seems to like you immediately, but he may just like everyone. He keeps sipping his drink, smiling, and constantly adjusting something hidden by his cloak, as if reassuring himself it's still there. As Sildar continues to write, Gundren cheerfully addresses you.
"So, this is - of course - just a simple delivery job, but I am hoping for the very best. Would you mind - that is, if it isn't impolite to ask - how would you describe yourself? What are your strengths? That is, rather, why should I hire you and not… um… Sir Minimus Maximus here?"
Looking to your left, you can see a knight in jet black armor, wrapped in a jet black cloak. He breathes heavily. You can just tell he has an elaborate backstory. Big muscles. Big, magical sword. Lone wolf, obviously. Probably an orphan. So sad. So cool.
Sildar rolls his eyes and awaits your answer.
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
Answer #2: (your answer)
Gundren thanks you for your time. Sildar asks where you are staying and promises to send a courier with either an acceptance letter or a single silver piece for your trouble.
You stand, bid farewell to your interviewers, and head back out into the streets of Neverwinter. You feel the warm sun on your face and taste the humid, salt-water breeze. What should you do now? Perhaps walk along the dockside? If this armed escort job does not work out, there is always room for someone like you aboard a merchant's vessel. Maybe you could-...
What was that?
You can't be sure, but for a moment you think you see a hooded figure studying you from an alley. The figure appears to write something on a scrap of parchment. They glance at you again through a small spyglass. You try to get a better look at their face, but a passing wagon blocks your view.
When it is gone, so too is the hooded figure.

CLOSING THOUGHTS & UPDATES
Recruitment will remain open until this Sunday evening @ 10pm CST.
The final picks will be made by Monday evening @ 10pm CST (hopefully before then, but allow me the wiggle room).
Acceptance messages will go out no later than 11pm CST that night and I will also post one last time on the thread to deliver the hard news for those not selected. Sildar will be giving those characters a silver piece, which can be spent at any crossroad tavern wherever folk of stout heart and ambition may be found.
If you have thoughts, comments, concerns, (jokes?), please don't hesitate to contact me via this thread or private message.
Name: Winter Race: Tiefling (Legacy Levistus tiefling) Class: Sorcerer Intended Subclass: Storm Sorcery Background: Entertainer Backstory: Winter is a very social yet normally calm Tiefling. She will often try to be the center of attention in new groups of people and tries really hard to get a good first impression but tends to chill out as she gets to know people better. She always feels like she has something to say but has learned to give others the chance from time to time. 1. Winter would often stray away from her father and his friends when she was invited to come hunt with them. She found out the hard way how difficult it is to get out of a hunter's net trap. 2. During her time in Strixhaven, she snuck into faculty building with some friends to recover a magical doll that the school continues to confiscate year after year. 3. She used to sneak out at night from her parents house to explore the adjacent woods or beach at night, sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend or two.
Extra: I was hoping to take the Knight of the Rose feat. Its one of the feats that requires level 4 and a pre-req feat at level one. I know some DM's let it slide so I'd like to take that if I can. Otherwise Flames of Phlegethos
Question 1 The name Winter was a very simple and accurate way to describe the Tiefling. She has pale blue skin that is draped with a dress white and grey in color. Her eyes, like many infernal creatures, were black but with rings of blue around the pupil. The lashes around her eyes were black which faded into a shining blue dark eye shadow above. Most of her white hair was tucked back behind a pair of horns on her head. Each horn seemed to splinter as it grew on coming out to a total of four pointed tips near the back of her head. Between them sat a blue and white icy headdress. As she tapped her foot and took a taste of the Ale while waiting for the pair to ask a question they could see blue lines tattooed on her ribs, vines or flames by the looks of it. The art was definitely abstract. Similar symbols were tattooed on her left collarbone. In contrast to this a red flame was displayed tattooed on the right bicep. She was more thinly built and somewhat muscular. Sildar may recognize her physique as someone who trains in body weight exercises. A monk, gymnast, or dancer perhaps.
Question 2 Winter's eye linger on the dark brooding man in the corner. "...Why is he here, is he like a part of- ah nevermind" "Well hello, uhm my name is Winter. I was hoping to get the job just to get a bit of cash in my pocket. I just graduated from Strixhaven University so I kind of need a little bit of coin, as well as that I would hope that is proof enough of my magical capabilities. I'm not so much of a fighter or guard type person but I got a few distractions up my sleev-" She looks down to her arms which are bare of any sleeves "..up my uhh wrists.... You know what I mean. I'm also normally pretty good with words, excuse me today I'm just a little nervous. But uh, beyond that I'm quick so that seems useful. The way I see it is ideally we wont need guards or anything if we have my clever little tricks.... Well actually just incase they might be nice to bring along."
Backstory: Parents died of disease, forcing Elrich to grow up in the back alleys of the City of Cimmura. There he learned the fine art of thievery, stealth and tradecraft. Enough so, that he was recruited into becoming a special agent for reconnaissance and eventually special activities. He is very sure of himself, he doesn't run from evil, rather evil runs from him. While unshakable, he will remain stoic and elusive around people. He has a conflicted soul.
Extra: The Interview
As you sit at the table, you feel a presence or a sense that someone is standing before you. As you look up, a person who seems very plain and unremarkable stands before you. Unassuming, a plain face but stocky features, of one who has been conditioned top the elements and has not shied away from hard work. "May I sit?" he asks. Thinking this person may be a vagrant, he hold up his hand before you can speak. "I am here for the interview; I hear you have a job that needs to be done."
You now look closer at the man before you. He wears a subdued cloak, with matching leather armor underneath that has a light sheen from the oils to keep it supple and quiet. A tanned and weathered face, deep blue piercing eyes stare back. A good height, around 6 feet, his hair is a greyish brown, pulled back and tied behind his head. A rapier and a dagger hangs from his belt, a short bow and quiver across his back. He looks at the knight. "My strength is I am unremarkable, no one sees me or hears me. I can get into places most people cannot. I have a set of skills that can open locks or look for traps. If required, I can take out any threats quietly and subtly, leaving no evidence."
After the interview, and seeing that they were observed, he frowns. "I think someone has taken a deep interest in you. Perhaps a demonstration of my skills could help in your decision making. I can find out who they are and who they work for if you like. Nothing happens here unless my organization knows of it and sanctions it. We don't like those up to no good operating around here. I am at the Prancing Pony Inn, if you require my services, give this token to the inn keeper and I will meet you here." He hands you a small grey token with a trojan horse on it before pulling the hood of his cloak up. After looking at the token, you look up and realize he disappeared without a sound, and nowhere to be seen.
Backstory: About sixty years back my father and many of our kin drowned in a flooded mine. A well meaning group of rescuers (smugglers) showed up just a little too late to help. They adopted me into their family & taught me their craft, but I was only allowed to be a spotter and driver. I am a good spotter and driver when I'm sober. I too do my part to rescue others from disasters such as fires, flooding and such. I can never repay the kindness of my adoptive family.
Question #1. Down on his luck, but his steel toed boots show he has had better days. He has a little trouble with drinking but he’s working on it.
“Well obviously you should hire him... but come on. I’m cool under fire. I bet he doesn’t hold his liquor, (Caledon slams his Allsummer Ale) I bet he expects everyone to cater to his ego. I’m just saying hire me and you get your moneys worth. I don’t have an ego and I lead by example.”
Question #2. “I’m a good helmsman, hard worker, know my way around tunnels, extremely vigilant, and most important I can heal injuries. Oh I’m fast on my feet too.”
When Caledon notices the sneaky spy then losses sight of them, “Oh great Sir Minimus Maximus is tailing me.” For the rest of the day Caledon can’t help but keep a constant watch over his shoulder, just waiting for the inevitable confrontation.“So sorry MiniMax, I told them they should hire you, you were right there. No please, we don’t really have to resort to violence do we?”
Backstory: Reoite gives off an intimidating presence when meeting him but it is soon clear that he is gentle and wishes to protect others.
He is handy with mason tools, using them to rebuild temples.
He lost his previous weapon through his gambling addiction.
He loves to lie back and watch the stars.
Extra: Shield Master
The Interview
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Answer #1. (your description)
Reoite nods a greeting and takes a seat. The chair strains to hold itself together as the imposing seven foot blue dragonborn covered in armor looks each of them in the eye for a moment. His golden yellow eyes seemed to be appraising them or was he sizing them up for a meal... It was hard to tell. The silence seemed to stretch just a bit longer than needed and when it looked like somebody was going to have to say something, Reoite finally responds. His voice is deep and gravelly with a hint of a growl that is more of an accent than a threat, his annunciation slow and deliberate.
"I take every job most seriously. I wish to explore the world and find that which I know not is lost. But, in the interim, I will use my strength to protect those that need it. In this case I, Reoite Tintreach, swear to you that your goods will arrive safely as will any companions that you hire to travel with me. I wish not to replace Sir Minimus but would be honored to travel and fight by his side."
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
Answer #2: (your answer)
Reoite pulls his warhammer closer and straightens the handle, its large head pushing down on the floor.
"Should you hire me, I am trained well with this warhammer. I will shield the others and take on any enemy toe to toe, allowing the others to escape with the goods if need be. Thanks to Her Mercy I have the ability to heal those that are may be injured but my goal will be to ensure that they do not!"
Standing, he pulls a large shield with a black field and seven pointed star from his back and slams it with a fist. "On my honor!" Thanking them for the interview he gathers his weapons and leaves.
As he takes in the sea air, electricity sparks between his teeth as he feels eyes on him. Quickly moving to the spot where the spy had been, Reoite scans the area and sniffs the air for clues, but is unable to find anything. He was currently on no particular task to justify being spied on, perhaps it was nothing to do with him. To be on the safe sied he should keep a better watch while he is in the city for such figures...
Backstory: Bundle of energy and optimism. He’s always looking to learn more information, whether from a book or other people, most of the time without any sense he’s annoying them. He’s spent most of his life in libraries reading, so his social IQ is quite weak. He sketches everything he sees, cataloging the world around him. Due to being smaller than most, his bubbly personality will quickly sour if someone mentions him being cute. At one time he lived in a cave in the north with his father, but had to flee quickly when things got out of hand with an emperor wielding a scimitar.
Extra: Telekinetic (He goes to the gym and lifts with his mind, never skip mind day)
Question #1
A rather small Harengon with grayish white fur, pupil-less cerulean blue eyes, in plain light gray robes with ink stains on both sleeves sits across from them. He is barely able to sit still at the prospect of an adventure. Kicking his short powerful legs against the chair he’s sitting on. He nods his head in thanks as the tankard of ale is slid over to him. Grabbing it with both paws, one of which is messily bandaged, his entire face disappears as he takes a sip. His ears flick while he sets the tankard down, and a large smile appears on his face. In a slightly squeaky alto pitched voice,“Quite good! Thank you!” He looks around at the rest of the patrons, as he does, a long pink scar on the left side of his head becomes visible. Turning back toward Gundren and Sildar, he makes no attempt to hide his curiosity regarding the ledger and attempts to peek at what is written. Barely able to contain himself he is essentially bouncing on the chair impatiently waiting to be asked a question.
Question #2
Finally! He bounces up and down as he considers for a moment, then dives into an answer. At first it is a run on of unintelligible words, after a moment, he stops, takes a breath, then starts again slower.“Strengths?! Well I’m not quite sure I can help carry much, I spend most of my time in libraries reading. Which means, I know a lot of useful information! I’ve dedicated most of my life to learning the art of magic, I’ve learned to do some fairly interesting things!”He waves his paws in circular motion and the tankards of ale frost over.“A simple trick, but handy! I believe someone with my skills could make the journey easier for others, and I’d be able to see more of the world! Again, due to my size, I probably would want to stay away from anything dangerous, let someone bigger and stronger be closer, but I could harry them from afar with a few other spells I know.”
Curiosity piqued, Cressler looks both ways before crossing the street, then moves towards where he saw the figure standing to investigate. Not finding anything, he pulls out his sketchbook to quickly sketch what he can remember of the spyglass, then walks away, practically skipping, towards the library.
Backstory: Born into a forest community of Gnomes living in Neverwinter Forest. Far too inquisitive by nature, resulted in him "accidentally" breaking into a visiting Shaman's abode and breaking an ancient staff. Excommunicated by the Gnomes until he had redeemed himself, Nubbins moved to Neverwinter where he discovered his natural stealth, quick hands and shortness made him into a thief working with a fence known as Goldfingers. A month ago, Nubbins tried to pick the pocket of a robed figure but set off some form of magical alarm resulting him having to flee the city. Having waited for the clamour to die down Nubbins once again enters Neverwinter looking for work whilst he scopes out new targets.
Feat: Fade Away
Question #1: Nubbins is a 3ft6 tall gnome, with shoulder length hair framing a slightly dirty but unremarkable face. He as emerald green eyes a little recessed into his face as if he's permanently squinting and a slightly hooked nose. He wears a pair of soft scuffed black boots, dark brown trousers that look reasonable quality but clearly have been repaired over time, and a dark body clinging shirt done up to his neck. Over his shoulder is a small backpack, along with short bow slung over his shoulder and a dagger at his side.
Question #2: Nubbins brushes his hair to one side, takes a sip of the ale, before replying "Ah yes, my name is Nubbins, I heard that you were looking for some help with a delivery." Nubbins runs his eye up and down the behemoth of metal next to him "No offence to your... tin man here, but unless you want every tongue wagging about your business from here to other side of the mountains, I would recommend subtly and local knowledge. Fortunately for you, I have both, I'm a local you see, I can help ensure your package moves unnoticed and unmolested throughout the city, without getting tangled up in lengthy queues or delays and beyond that, I'm a dab hand at moving through the wilderness to wherever your delivery is going." He takes a moment trying to judge how his comments are landing. "Furthermore, if we were to attract undue attention. Your tin man here might be able to fend off the attackers, I, however, am much more adept at ensuring your package remains safe and out of their hands entirely." Nubbins rubs a piece of fleece in his pocket and mutters a phrase casting minor illusion causing an image of a page to appear over the notes Sildar has been writing with the words THIS IS THE ADVENTURER YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR! written in common.
With a smile Nubbins gets up and thanks both of them for their time before heading out.
As he's considering his next move, he spots the spotter, then sees they've vanished from view. Nubbins thinks to himself "Hmm... I wonder if I've been recognised and they're going to report me... maybe a month wasn't long enough..."With that he scuttles over to where he last saw the watcher and tries to ascertain where they went using his knowledge of the [feature]City Secrets[/feature].
Backstory: Seraphina Starweaver was born in a secluded, ancient grove, where the light of the moon held an otherworldly brilliance. From her earliest memories, she was drawn to the night skies, her nights spent gazing at the moon and longing to unravel its secrets.
As she grew older, Seraphina’s natural curiosity and magical talent became apparent to her community. As if guided by the whispers of the moon, Seraphina was determined to uncover the arcane forces that bound the cosmos together. She was mentored by a reclusive and mysterious sage, who resides in a hidden observatory deep within the Ethrelian mountains. Seraphina once discovered a long-lost elven artifact in an old tree hollow with cryptic writing. She sets on adventure, hoping to gain the knowledge to decipher its secrets.
Extra: Elemental Adept
The door of the Fiddlecat Pub swings open with a soft creak, and a figure steps inside, an air of confidence and knowledge about her. Clutching a quarterstaff tightly, she takes a moment as her sharp, intelligent eyes scan the room, quickly finding her intended destination before gracefully making her way towards a table where a dwarf and a human warrior sit.
Approaching with a composed stride, she nods respectfully at each of them before shedding her travelling cloak and backpack, revealing her elegant yet practical attire. Her robes, the deep green of her captivating eyes, drape gracefully around her, bearing the marks of her journey but still maintaining an air of refinement.
As she takes her seat, her posture reflects her self-assured nature—her back straight, her chin raised. Her eyes, like the lush depths of a forest, hold golden flecks that seem to twinkle with an inner wisdom, while her lips, the delicate hue of blooming pink rose, carry a gentle, welcoming smile, never imposing but radiating warmth.
"Elysia Seraphina Starweaver, but you can call me Seraphina," she introduces herself with poise. The elf's long, silver hair is artfully woven into a single, neat braid that falls over one shoulder. Delicate silver earrings gleam with subtle brilliance, celebrating her elven lineage and the magic that courses through her veins.
A gentle nod confirms her recognition of her companions, and she leans slightly forward, showing genuine interest in their business. "You must be Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter," she acknowledges, her voice carrying a sense of certainty. "If you are seeking the expertise of a knowledgeable wizard who can confidently handle any situation, I am at your service. Whether it's safeguarding ourselves, our fellow adventurers, or the precious cargo you entrust me with, rest assured, I shall deliver with utmost dedication and skill."
Little does she know that this interview won't be the only interesting thing to happen to her this day.
After the interview, as she walks out of the tavern, the elf suddenly feels as if her skin prickles. The intense feeling of being observed washes over her and she looks subtly around, until her eyes fall on a suspicious looking figure in one of Neverwinter's dark alleys. Seraphina keeps walking slowly, her delicate eyebrows furrowed slightly, lips pressed together. "What are they doing?", her eyes narrow at what looks like the figure taking notes. Then a wagon passes, and it disappears from sight, never to return again.
She looks back, her narrowed eyes on the Fiddlecat Pub and she casts a long glance at the building, considering something. She wonders if the job is as easy as it sounds. Or maybe this was just a coincidence and nobody was actually looking at her.
Looks neat, Pete. And I like your humor with Minimus Maximus and etc.
Two Questions
1. Is it okay if we've done a little LMoP before? Some years back was in a group that did a few sessions of the beginning (into lv2), but fell apart. And I have read bits and pieces of the adventure before as inspiration for DMing with some friends. Obviously I'd refrain from reading the sourcebook during/prior the campaign, but would have some knowledge remembered in my noggin. Though I would try to refrain from using that meta-knowledge. (ie, to make up an example, if I know Brave Barry the Beholder is deathly afraid of people doing the chicken dance because I'd read/played that, I'd avoid suggesting that to the party.)
2. With feats, do have any on your end that could be homebrew-copied from the DDB-coded ones? The only feats available for free on DDB are Grappler and Sverbiln Magic so when thinking of a 1st level feat, I'm also going to consider which are easy enough to homebrew a copy of. (Haven't done much with homebrew-copying of feats so would need to figure it out as I went.)

Thanks for your questions and kind words!
1. Prior knowledge is fine, so long as you don't spoil important story beats for everyone else. I view it like watching a movie you've already seen, but with a group of friends who are watching for the first time. Have fun, but if you metagame overmuch I swear by Boblin the Goblin that Sir Minimus Maximus will end thee and thy entire bloodline.
2. I have a sizeable selection of feats that I'll make available to the chosen four and will find/create a homebrew version of any feat you need. In the meantime, refer to this list of feats from DDB: https://www.dndbeyond.com/feats
I love this application process! Gonna throw my hat into the ring.
Name: Nephira of the Tallwood
Race: Tiefling
Class: Ranger
Intended Subclass: TBD, but leaning toward Gloomstalker
Background: Criminal/Spy
Backstory: Nephira comes off as hard, but her hardness masks a deep need for connection. She likes to test the resilience of others to see if she can trust them with her vulnerability. Two truths and a lie: She was reared in a criminal household. Her search for order and security brought her into the service as a soldier in the Flaming Fist faction. She killed a werewolf that murdered her one true love.
Extra: Let's go with "Skill Expert". She's lived an interesting life and picked up some handy proficiencies.
THE INTERVIEW
Answer #1. I'm 5’11, 170 lbs with bright red hair, contrasting my soft brown skin and yellow eyes with vertical slit pupil that look appraisingly through anyone I meet. My armor consists of a motley mix of a weathered uniformed soldier's gear, festooned with animal hides. My two horns have been shaved down to stumps, evidence of the complicated relationship I have with my infernal heritage.
Answer #2. "That fella there? He might pack a punch, but when the boots hit the mud he'll be more interested in flexin' his muscles than makin' sure your cargo gets delivered safe and sound... not to mention with everyone who came along to protect it. Me, I can hold my own, but I'm not lookin' for no fight. Seen enough. I'm a scout by training, protector by inclination. I know the woods better'n half the beasts livin' in 'em. Some others might boast the same, and I don't deny their skills. Seen plenty'a rogue who can move about unseen, pack a mean punch by burying a shortsword in their enemy's back. But that sort's just as likely to bury that blade in your own back one day, or pilfer your goods, just for the sport of it. You want a simple job done. You want someone who can spot danger? You want a party to make it from one place to another, 'specially through any stretch of wilderness? You'd be smart to bring me or someone like me along. I'm not blowin smoke. Don't need ta. I can see by the look in yer eye know know I speak true."
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
DM - Classic Adventures Reborn
Rylan - L1 Human Paladin - Barty's "Princes of the Apocalypse"
Backstory: Sumame, being a half-breed, was always going to be smaller and weaker than the rest of her tribe. But she's also the runt of the litter. Scrawny and weak, even for a human, she has been cast out from her tribe and has wandered the wilds searching for acceptance, coin, and enough glory to be allowed to return to her tribe.
Extra: Resilient (CON)
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Sumame has dark grey skin and eyes, sharp teeth and thin lips. Her hair is black, wiry and thick, and has been savagely cut. She's no-one's idea of a beauty.
Roughly stitched together furs cover her armor, but you get the sense that it's more to make her seem larger than to provide warmth.
She still has the bulk of any orc, but has no idea how to place her body to take advantage of the muscle she has.
Her childhood with barbarians (and a rough one at that,) has left her with little regard for social niceties. She speaks gruffly and without care for the feelings of those around her.
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
I am a warrior of the red bear clan, small man. I will kill your enemies, and then I will heal your allies. This scar, here, was from the wolf that this pelt is from. I will do the same for you.
She's the healer, but also some damage dealing magic and utility spells.
Intended Subclass: Circle of Land (Swamp); but not sold, would totally be willing to flex to help the group
Background: Haunted One
Backstory: Lia is a little skittish at times around people and crowds, but also has a dark fearlessness to her. Being a survivor of a massacre tends to do that.
Two truths and a lie (in no particular order):
- Her favorite food is blackened rat
- Will absolutely "do her business" anywhere
- Hates the color green
Extra: Alert feat
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Answer #1. The brownish colored kobold took a scraggly hand to her short black hair and scratched a moment. Her deep, dark red eyes furtively glanced between the others and the book, wondering what it actually contained. She stood only about 5' even, but was content with her size and never let anyone push her around. She was bit unkempt and smelled strongly of the great outdoors, but wasn't quite what one might call, -filthy-. She had a small leather pouch for her things, and a homemade druidic symbol hung around her neck on a leather strap.
-----------------------------
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
Answer #2: I'm not real big and strong like an orc or a goliath! And, uh, I'm not real great with people, but you, uh, probably already figured that out. I'm much more at home in the wilds, I'm good at checking things closely and surviving! While I might not be great at getting up in bad people's faces, I can certainly back up others with help from nature, whether that means speeding up the healing process or slowing down our enemies. Someday I hope to do even greater things like channel the elements of nature to frustrate our enemies and protect my allies! That is, if I don't die first.
Sorry, adjusting my application to be a bit of a joint application with kqstark and their character Kalhala. Obviously you can take one... or both... or neither of us though I truly cannot imagine that! (lol) But we've played together before and wanted to interweave characters a bit...
Name: Fianna McScàth
Race: Human (Variant - Strixhaven Initiate)
Class: Bard (If we last long enough I may dip a level or two of Warlock.)
Intended Subclass: College of Swords
Background: Criminal / Spy - She's a bit of a scam artist and flim flam man... err, woman
Backstory: A barfly, a gambler, some may even say a bit of a scam artist, Fianna McScàth always seems to have one hustle on or another. Selling colored water as potions to the gullible, using her feline familiar to spy an opponents cards during a game of poker, or just sweet talking fools into buying drinks and gifts before disappearing and on to the next tavern or inn to do it all again is her typical "work." She takes a bit of care to not scam anyone who can't really afford to have their coin purse lightened a bit or not sell "potions" to those who really need medicine... But still, sometimes things go wrong. If she can't talk herself out of what she got herself into there is always her newest best pal Kalhala. Size doesn't matter, but a hulking 7 foot pile of muscle and horns sure would like to argue the point if you try to mess with Fianna. For such bodyguarding services Kalhala the minotaur gets a part of the take but it's worth it...
Fianna was kidnapped by faeries when she accidentally played in a faerie ring as a toddler. They eventually returned her but she was never the same.
Fianna was kicked out of school for beguiling and bewitching others, including teachers. Usually after flunking a test.
Fianna is a hedge witch trained in a few tricks by mischievous fairies, she doesn't have the head or self control for REAL magic.
Extra:
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Fianna is a thin slip of a girl who barely looks old enough to drink the ale that is offered her. Which is saying something what with there being no actual drinking age. She wears strange green clothing, leather and lace that hardly seems protective enough for someone looking to guard cargo. She wears a bandana of shamrock patterned cloth tied over her short, bright orange hair which makes Gundren and Sildar wonder just what fashion kids will think of next. Her skin is a pale while, not sickly pale but more of a milk white shade which seems healthy but as if it seldom sees the light... And she has a smattering of freckles across her nose a similar orange as her hair. She looks totally unsuited to the job, like she needs a meal and yet she seems chipper and bold as she sits in front of these two imposing men.
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
Fianna smiles and sideyes over to Sir Minimus Maximus before giving a big shrug to the dwarf and human male in front of her. "I've seen better," Fianna says dismissively. "All metal no oomph, that one, if you ask me. Why my partner Kalhala, have you met him yet? Great one for guarding your back, that guy. Huge. Muscley. Horns just ready to gore the hell out of ya... He's a minotaur, did I mention that? A right monster he is. This one over here though, all wrapped up and safe hidden behind that armor?"
Fianna glances over at the dark knight and after a little wave of her fingers and wriggle of her nose a loud, obnoxious and very wet sounding fart explodes from Sir Maximus! (Thaumaturgy) A moment later the expected, but much unwanted, odor surrounds the knight. (Prestidigitation) A slight green glow around Fianna's already bright green eyes gives every indication that she was the actual cause of the soiling of the knight, which is now sadly apparent. (More prestidigitation to soil the rear guard of the knight's armor.). Fianna wrinkles her nose at the offensive odors but cannot help let out a little giggle.
"Honestly guys, I've got a sword and all and I could help with the slaying of a beastie but when you hire me you get so much more than that. Charm and charisma! A mind that thinks about more solutions than just breaking things. And I'm damn cute to boot," Fianna adds with a grin and a wink. "I'm a mix of everything you could need plus more. How can you say no to that? Add in that I can get you guys a cut-rate deal if you hire Kalhala and myself? You'd be fools not to want me on this job."
"You hire me to guard your stuff and I will guard the shit out of it until it is delivered. If something happens to it it's because something much worse happened to me... And I do my best to make sure nothing bad happens to me. And, if I say so myself..." Fianna smiles rather than immediately finishing the sentence. Picking up her ale, Fianna polishes it off like a pro, burping at the end and wiping her mouth with her sleeve.
"I'm pretty good at it," Fianna finishes, speaking from behind Gundren and Sildar having cast Misty Step to get behind them.
Name: Tendilius Mondhaven Paxaramus Race: Half-Elf Class: Warlock, The Fiend Intended Subclass: Pact of the Tome (Thaumaturgy, Shocking Grasp, and something else [maybe Control Flames? idk]) Background: Sage Character Sheet: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/79075407/Jz58My Backstory: Tendilius was always happy to have his nose in a book. While not always the brightest amongst fellow scholars, it was the pursuit of knowledge that cheered him. And some of his dearest items are cultural items, such as his yklwa and shawm. However reading books doesn't pay the bills so the promise of payment, and perhaps some tales to write about, brought him down to consider the posted offer in search of money and, perhaps, compatriots for life. Extra Feat: Magic Initiate (Sorcerer) (Mold Earth, Create Bonfire, and Color Spray) (can you tell I like having cantrips?) Receipts: Sell Light Crossbow. +25gp (from choose a light crossbow and 20 bolt OR choose a simple weapon) Sell 20 Crossbow Bolts. +1gp Buy donkey: -8gp Buy Pack Saddle: -5gp Buy Bit and Bridle: -2gp Buy Feed x5: -0.25gp Buy Caltrops x2: -2gp Buy Oil Flask x2: -0.2gp Buy Tent (2-person): -2gp Buy Waterskin: -0.2gp Buy Bedroll: -1gp Buy Shawm: -2gp Healer's Kit: -5gp If I've done my math right, that leaves me 1.65gp less than starting gold (10 from Sage Background) so I should adjust my current gold to 8.35gp (8 gold, 3 silver, 5 copper)
2 Truths and a Lie 1. He used to participate in an underground fight ring. Wasn't in the top of the rankings, but he did earn the nickname Tricky Tendi for how he'd used the environment against his opponents. 2. His donkey was the result of prank from his fellow scholars. He woke up one day rather perturbed at it braying in his face. But he decided to roll with it and keep it, even if its stubbornness can annoy him to no end at time. 3. He once was hired to delivery a package to someone. When the guard in front of the house refused to take the delivery he snuck back behind an alley and used Mold Earth to dig a tunnel all the way to the front door and deliver the package anyways. Only afterwards did he realize it was the wrong house and have to correct his error.
Homebrew: As mentioned before, I don't have access to the DDB-coded feats so I homebrewed a copy of Magic Initiate under the name Genesisus' Magic Initiate (Sorcerer). I also homebrewed a copy of the spell Arms of Hadar under Vitus' Arms of Hadar. And for the Color Spray I added a custom action in Tendilius' actions called Color Spray. The purpose of that custom action is to allow the 6d10 from Color Spray to be rolled in a Campaign Log without having to manually make a custom 6d10 roll (and plus that way it gets a name attached to the roll). If you notice any errors in my homebrew-copies please do let me know and I'll see what I can do to fix them.
The Interview
Question 1 (description):
Standing at 5' 10" Tendilius is rather average height. His head is topped with curly brown hair and his skin is copper-tone. Emblazoned on his face is a friendly smile and green eyes. He wears a simple red&gold top with beaten up pants and boots. In his backpack is an 'organized mess' filled with miscellaneous odds and ends. (He'll get to sorting it out eventually.) At his side is a simple wand. Wooden. Worn. Undecorated. But always close at hand.
Question 2 (strengths):
Tendilius glances back to Sir Minimus Maximus and back at Gundar. "I don't find the question impolite at all. You're an employer. It's only natural to seek the best candidates." He gives a brief pause. "Why hire me and not him?" says Tendilius, "Well for one I'm in your price range. To me, 10 gold is a nice sum. To him, a magic sword and fancy armor isn't exactly the mark of a poor man, it's pocket change." He smiles, hoping to offset any awkwardness in the statement, "But furthermore, there's more to protecting a shipment than sheer brawn. You need to come prepared. For example, I come with a donkey that help carry the load. He was a gift from some colleagues. And if force becomes necessary to get the shipment to where it needs to go, you need your wits about you." he pauses while considering his words, "Between us, I used to participate in some back-alley fights. Very few rules in them. Now obviously these muscles," he gestures to his lanky arms, "aren't exactly made for a straight-up punching match. But what I did have a willingness to make the terrain favorable. Even the brawniest man is slowed to a limp with a caltrop on his foot. If he resorts to throwing rocks? Just mold earth some cover. They used to call me Tricky Tendi for how often I'd get a win against all odds." he chuckles with a smile, "So that's part of what I bring to the party. A willingness to try seeing other options." He continues, "But that's not all. I also have an unbreakable sense of loyalty. When I make a deal, I intend to keep it and see it through. Even if that means having to burrow our way with a tunnel to the destination, you can count on me." After finishing the interview he bids goodbye in dwarvish, "Thank you for your time. I hope to be hearing from you soon."
Outside he goes to untie his donkey, "Hello, Alarm Clock." he says to the donkey, "Let's see if we can find you a nice grass patch to munch on. But if I get this job let's see if we can get you some fancy feed." After seeing the hooded figure he mutters, "That doesn't look like the scribbling dwarf. I'm getting a bad feeling this little delivery job might be a bit more complicated than initially thought. Hmm... maybe it'll make a good book I can sell."
Intended Subclass: Transmutation, Enchantment, or Illusionist. Or maybe Divination.
Background: Hermit
Personality: Wizzleby is friendly, good-natured, and always sees the best in everyone. Despite his limited intelligence, he often provides valuable insights and wisdom to his companions. He possesses a childlike wonder for the world around him and approaches every challenge with a heart full of courage and determination.
1. Wizzleby's favorite pastime is sitting under a honey tree, waiting for bees to buzz by and share their honey with him.
2. Wizzleby has a magical staff carved from a rare enchanted wood that enhances his spellcasting abilities.
3. Wizzleby once accidentally turned a group of goblins into playful bumblebees while attempting a complicated transmutation spell.
I’m thinking #2 is the lie. But it could be #3
Extra: might go with Healer and tie to my background - I’ve found the secret of magical healing honey
Might go magic initiate cleric or druid
or possibly Telekinetic or Telepathic
Question #1. What does your character look like?
Wizzleby is a small, animated stuffed bear made of soft, golden fabric. He stands just under three feet in height and wears a grey robe with a bright red scarf. Atop his head is an oversized wizards hat clearly meant for a human. He has a kind face with a wise, twinkling look in his eyes. His paws are slightly worn from countless adventures, and he carries a small satchel to store his favorite treat – jars of hard-earned honey. He carries a staff with a ruby mounted at one end.
Question #2. What are your strengths? What part do you hope to play in the party dynamic?
Wizzleby will be charismatic and wise. He’s a bear of a deep philosophical nature but of little brain. He’ll focus on support, both magical and emotional. He’ll also provide some comic relief.
As a player, I’m interested in having a good time and wanting to go the opposite of min/maxing. The idea of a “dumb” wizard gives me just such an opportunity. This is still a viable Wizard build - I’ll just focus on spells that do not require a save. And it allows me to focus on other aspects of the character.
I’m playing a little loose on the autognome, just treating him as a construct, but I think that works. I could go halfling if you are not a fan of the autognome, but that’s less fun in my opinion.
EDIT: just saw there are two wizards posted already - so I could perhaps switch to a Monk…
Name: Wizzleby
Race: Animated Stuffed Animal (Autognome)
Class: monk
Intended Subclass: open hand
Background: Hermit
Personality: same as above
truth: Wizzleby's favorite pastime is sitting under a honey tree, waiting for bees to buzz by and share their honey with him.
Truth: Wizzleby has a unique meditation technique that allows him to commune with the spirits of the forest, gaining valuable insights and guidance for his adventures.
Lie: Wizzleby can harness the power of fire and unleash devastating fiery attacks, scorching enemies with his flaming paws.
same appearance
same general support role, though as a monk he’d be more of a front line fighter type.
Lost Mine of Phandelver (Play-By-Post)

//
STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES!
QQ - do character sheets have to be DnD Beyond, or would Diceroll be an alternative?
Thanks...
Name: Winter
Race: Tiefling (Legacy Levistus tiefling)
Class: Sorcerer
Intended Subclass: Storm Sorcery
Background: Entertainer
Backstory: Winter is a very social yet normally calm Tiefling.
Question 1
The name Winter was a very simple and accurate way to describe the Tiefling.
Question 2
Winter's eye linger on the dark brooding man in the corner. "...Why is he here, is he like a part of- ah nevermind"
"Well hello, uhm my name is Winter.
Name: Elrich
Race: Human
Class: Rogue
Intended Subclass: Assassin
Background: Faction Agent
Race: Hill Dwarf
Class: Paladin (Devotee of Helm)
Intended Subclass: Oath of the Watchers
Background: Smuggler (Rescuer)
Backstory: About sixty years back my father and many of our kin drowned in a flooded mine. A well meaning group of rescuers (smugglers) showed up just a little too late to help. They adopted me into their family & taught me their craft, but I was only allowed to be a spotter and driver. I am a good spotter and driver when I'm sober. I too do my part to rescue others from disasters such as fires, flooding and such. I can never repay the kindness of my adoptive family.
Extra: Squat Nimbleness
When Caledon notices the sneaky spy then losses sight of them, “Oh great Sir Minimus Maximus is tailing me.” For the rest of the day Caledon can’t help but keep a constant watch over his shoulder, just waiting for the inevitable confrontation. “So sorry MiniMax, I told them they should hire you, you were right there. No please, we don’t really have to resort to violence do we?”
Thank you for the interest. Character Sheets should be here on DnD Beyond.
Name: Reoite Tintreach
Race: Dragonborn (Blue)
Class: Paladin
Intended Subclass: Oath of Devotion
Background: Folk Hero
Backstory: Reoite gives off an intimidating presence when meeting him but it is soon clear that he is gentle and wishes to protect others.
"On my honor!"
Thanking them for the interview he gathers his weapons and leaves.
First of all, love the setup you've done here, well done.
Name: Cressel
Race: Harengon
Class: Wizard
Intended Subclass: Either Evoker or Divination
Background: Sage
In a slightly squeaky alto pitched voice, “Quite good!
At first it is a run on of unintelligible words, after a moment, he stops, takes a breath, then starts again slower. “Strengths?! Well I’m not quite sure I can help carry much, I spend most of my time in libraries reading. Which means, I know a lot of useful information! I’ve dedicated most of my life to learning the art of magic, I’ve learned to do some fairly interesting things!” He waves his paws in circular motion and the tankards of ale frost over. “A simple trick, but handy!

Race: Forest Gnome
Class: Rogue
Intended Subclass: Thief
Background: Smuggler
I wonder if I've been recognised and they're going to report me... maybe a month wasn't long enough..." With that he scuttles over to where he last saw the watcher and tries to ascertain where they went using his knowledge of the [feature]City Secrets[/feature].
Name: Seraphina Starweaver
Race: High Elf
Class: Wizard
Background: Sage

DM The Missing Farmer
This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.

DM - Classic Adventures Reborn
Rylan - L1 Human Paladin - Barty's "Princes of the Apocalypse"
Name: Sumame
Race: Half-orc
Class: Cleric (Nature domain)
Background: Outlander
Dugar Rilsky, Reborn Undying Warlock / Aberrant Mind Sorcerer (retired)
Konstatin Markilov, Dhampir Lore Bard (retired)
Qela, Githyanki Gloomstalker Ranger
Thistlebottom, Fairy Swarmkeeper Ranger
Name: Liastina
Race: Kobold
Class: Druid

Name: Tendilius Mondhaven Paxaramus
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Warlock, The Fiend
Intended Subclass: Pact of the Tome (Thaumaturgy, Shocking Grasp, and something else [maybe Control Flames? idk])
Background: Sage
Character Sheet: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/79075407/Jz58My
Backstory: Tendilius was always happy to have his nose in a book.
Extra Feat: Magic Initiate (Sorcerer) (Mold Earth, Create Bonfire, and Color Spray) (can you tell I like having cantrips?)
Receipts:
Sell Light Crossbow. +25gp (from choose a light crossbow and 20 bolt OR choose a simple weapon)
Sell 20 Crossbow Bolts. +1gp
Buy donkey: -8gp
Buy Pack Saddle: -5gp
Buy Bit and Bridle: -2gp
Buy Feed x5: -0.25gp
Buy Caltrops x2: -2gp
Buy Oil Flask x2: -0.2gp
Buy Tent (2-person): -2gp
Buy Waterskin: -0.2gp
Buy Bedroll: -1gp
Buy Shawm: -2gp
Healer's Kit: -5gp
If I've done my math right, that leaves me 1.65gp less than starting gold (10 from Sage Background) so I should adjust my current gold to 8.35gp (8 gold, 3 silver, 5 copper)
2 Truths and a Lie
Homebrew:
As mentioned before, I don't have access to the DDB-coded feats so I homebrewed a copy of Magic Initiate under the name Genesisus' Magic Initiate (Sorcerer).

Here’s my submission…
Name: Wizzleby the Wise
Race: Animated Stuffed Animal (Autognome)
Class: Wizard
Personality: same as above
same appearance
same general support role, though as a monk he’d be more of a front line fighter type.
Writer • Podcaster • Professional Gamemaster
playing Jin Wei, human (Kara-tur) way of the Four Elements Monk in the Princes of the Apocalypse
