Hi. One of my player hasn't been on for a while, and the party is having a hard time without him. We are currently in a region I homebrewed called the Fields of Sorrow. It is a haunted region near the Darklake. The recent arrival of Orcus has made the Fields violent.
The party is making its way to Gracklestug, the city of derro. They decided to use the Darklake as a shortcut. The current party consists of:
Trill, kenku bard
Aimon, half-elf rogue
Caelynn, elf ranger
Zach, half-elf warlock (This is the one who hasn't been on)
I'm looking for a tanky character as the party is pretty squishy.
If you want to join, I need:
Character name
Race
Class and subclass (level 3)
Ability scores (4d6, reroll ones once, place where you want, reroll if total is below 75)

Backstory (Include why you are in the Fields of Sorrow)

No homebrew. Official, UA, and Crit Role stuff is allowed.
Backstory: Belgran was born to a family that had been exiled from the city of Gracklstugh long before we was born. Like the last few generations of his kin he was raised to go out and find a way to earn their way back in. To do so the young Duergar was trained for hours upon hours through out the early years of his life, only putting his weapon down to eat or sleep.
Belgran set out at his earliest chance to make a name for not only his family but for himself. During his travels he met up with a group of mercenaries that was made of people from all the races of the Underdark with even some from the surface joining them. For the next several years he traveled with them and prospered.
The last mission accepted was to travel into Fields of Sorrow to deal with several fiends and other such creatures seen in the area. While the first few battles were easy enough, Belgran and his group ran into a more powerful fiend and won but in the end Belgran was the only survivor. With little else to do except find a safe place to heal from his injuries, the Duergar did just that and then began to make his way out of the gods forsaken place.

Backstory: A wanderer unfamiliar with these lands, Fedex was intrigued by the name “Field of Sorrows” when he first heard of it from far away. It matched his mood. Fedex grew up in a quiet hamlet where nothing exciting ever happened. Everyone either farmed, worked in the mill by the river, or were involved in the delivering of the grains to larger markets. One summer evening a company of soldiers, battleworn and beaten up were retreating through the fields and happened upon the tiny village. The men were obviously not going to make it much farther for the day, so they were invited to rest for the night, taking shelter in the various farmhouses and facilities that were available. Fedex was fascinated by their tales as he and others served the soldiers food and drink, while others helped tend to their wounds. The company departed without incident the following day, but Fedex could no longer be satisfied with the rural lifestyle. For months, he became less and less happy with his life in the hamlet. After the harvest he proclaimed to his family that he was determined to enlist in the corps. His family threw as many roadblocks in his way as they could, but by mid-winter, Fedex’s mind was made up. Although he packed and unpacked his belongings for weeks, this time he really was leaving. He had already said goodbye many times only to turn around and unpack. This night, a chilly and clear night with a waning gibbous moon to light his way, he was off. He found his way to a sizeable town and was directed to a larger city where he was told soldiers were enlisted. His accuracy with projectiles and stout constitution earned him a place in training. He did commission a few letters back home but they were never responded to, he was sure he disappointed his family greatly. Eventually he ceased sending letters home. He was with his regiment for just over 4 years when his company was involved in a skirmish with goblins that turned into a route when reinforcements of gnolls and bugbears descended on his platoon and wiped them out. One man and one half-orc managed to survive by escaping before they were completely surrounded. Fedex also survived, but he did so by hiding wounded amongst the corpses of his comrades and feigned death. A shameful secret he will keep to the end of his days. He bided his time until the enemy was satiated, feasting on the remains of his former “friends”. Stifling the frequent urge to vomit at the noises of bones cracking and flesh ripping, he snuck out of the enemy encampment and limped back into his base 2 days later. He bears the scar from a gnoll’s sword across his forehead to this day. He was honorably discharged from duty 5 months later after his body (but not his conscience) was healed. For his services he was granted his current inventory. Now he wanders, trying to find a new purpose and perhaps an end to the nightmares.
Race/Class: Varian Human (Shield-Master) Paladin (Oath of Redemption)
Alignment: Neutral Good
Background: Charlatan
Backstory: Using the Ten-Minute Backstory Format
Key Elements:
Devout young man ostracized from his church after a terrible crime. He fights to redeem others and himself.
He carries a grim demeanor and pained look on his face. Haunted by nightmares, he can identify part of himself with the most vilest of evils.
Began life as a scrappy orphan living in the streets of Luskan. He was caught stealing and sentenced to death, but just before the executioner's axe fell, he was saved by the benevolence of the High Priestess of Lathandar, god of the Dawn.
The High Priestess took him into the Church of Lathander. There, he developed a romantic relationship with the High Priestess's daughter, a nun named Prudence. These were the happiest years of his life- his devotion to Lathander manifested a vision where he met an angel. The angel gave him his Paladin powers, but told him that his life will be full of suffering and turmoil.
Eventually, Rian found that Prudence had been cheating on him with another man. In a fit of rage, he killed both of them. After he had realized what he had done, he ran away from the Church like a thief in the night, ran as far away as he could have. He atoned for his misdeeds, but he knew the Church would never accept him back. He would never forgive himself, and he channels that self-loathing to smite evil and assist the forces of good, seeking to redeem others like him.
Portrait:
Some details:
Goals:
I think it would be cool if Rian was actually able to redeem himself in the eyes of the Church. Maybe when he is high enough level, he could resurrect his long lost love.
Rian's endeavors to redeem as many people as he can, facing down evil creatures in the hopes of turning them to the light. He is bulwark of faith and uses violence as a last resort.
Secrets:
After news of his deeds spread, the Church of Lathander has actually engaged in a theological argument regarding Rian. He doesn't know it, but while many priests call for him to be brought to justice, others believe that he should be acquitted from his crimes in light of his devotion.
Rian is being hunted by Prudence. It turns out she was a warlock, consorting with evil forces. After Prudence died, she was resurrected as a Revenant, whose singular goal is to kill Rian.
Allies and Enemies:
Bernard Lionsbane is an old exorcist with a dark past similar to Rian's. After Rian fled from the Church, Bernard took him and convinced him to not take his own life. Bernard became Rian's mentor and counselor, driving him to become a beacon of good.
(If this character is chosen, I think it would be cool if another player character is also a friend of Rian).
The High Priestess of Lathander has turned bitter against Rian. Grieving from the death of her daughter, she seeks to hinder Rian's efforts whenever she can, not caring for morality of her interference.
Memories:
Rian often recalls his childhood on the streets of Luskan. He had a knack for gambling, Three-Dragon Ante specifically, and he made a living scamming and swindling people with the help of his merry band of friends.
Rian remembers his first kiss Prudence gave him in the temple garden, while a glorious sunrise rose ahead. That was one of the best memories he's ever had, but ever since her death he vowed never to allow himself to be attached to another woman again. He doesn't want a repeat of the past.
Rian proudly remembers the first person he redeemed to the side of good. The man was a hardened thief, but after he met Rian, the thief became a locksmith, channeling those skills into the force of good.
Recently, Rian has undertaken an expedition into the Underdark. He knows it is a place of great evil, but he believes that even the most evil-hearted of people like the drow can be redeemed. The arrival of Orcus is also on his mind- it is his job to destroy such fiends. That’s why he arrived in the Fields of Sorrow.
Hi @Dimir_MTG! This looks really interesting. I love a good role play session! Feel free to check out my recent posts to see if our play-styles would gel! I hope so. I can easily post multiple times a day. Here’s my character idea:-
Character name: Oak Oxenfield
Race: Minotaur
Portrait:-
Class and subclass (level 3): Barbarian (berserker)
Ability scores: 131816151212
Background: Soldier
Backstory (Include why you are in the Fields of Sorrow): Oak was stolen from his family and his homeland when he was young. He’s only got a few scant memories of his family: being held by his mother; playing with his brothers and sisters. Or maybe that’s just what he hopes he remembers. He was raised into slavery, and used for his brute strength. Sold to the highest bidder and treated no better than an animal. Until one day he’d grown too big and too strong for his owner and he escaped. He can’t remember much about the escape. He worries that he killed everyone that night, but he honestly can’t remember. Unable to fit into normal society he enlisted into the military and trained as a soldier. Now he travels from town to town, picking up work where he can: a mercenary, a bouncer, a bodyguard. On the face of it, just a monster. But under the skin, perhaps just misunderstood. A gentle giant.
Oak could have been in the Fields of Sorrow for any number of reasons. Maybe he picked up a job to go there, maybe he got detached from his party, or maybe they all died! (I’d like to brainstorm something epic with you if possible). I thought maybe your party could come across him stuck somehow (in a mantrap, or stuck in a swamp or pinned under rubble), and maybe they think he’s a beast to begin with, then realise he’s in need of help, then he will be indebted to them! Kind of psyched for this already! :-)
You may have 1 uncommon magic item: Probably a +1 Greataxe (I’ll have to think up a cool name for it! ;-)

Backstory (Include why you are in the Fields of Sorrow)
Gorm Diabhal never knew anything but the Crimson Guild. As the story goes, one of the guilds burglars tripped over the baby Tiefling while fleeing from a job. They picked up what the dropped and was about to punt whatever had tripped them up when they noticed that it was a baby wrapped up in a black robe. This particular baby had alabaster skin and blue tufts of hair upon their head and little nubby horns just starting to poke out from their forehead. Not one known for sentiment, this thief took the baby back to the guild anyway, thinking perhaps they could ransom the child, or sell it, or something...
Instead Gorm became a bit of a pet for the guild with everyone taking turns taking care of her. As she grew older she changed into a bit of a mascot, then a bit of an apprentice and eventually, when Tinya Tabashil recognized her skills, she eventually was trained to be an enforcer for the group. Gorm Diabhal was happy enough with her life growing up, she knew very little else and so no reason to learn... But as Gorm grew into adulthood and started making more and more friends outside of the guild, and this coinciding with the guild wanting her to do darker and darker deeds, Gorm decided it was time to leave....
Gorm left the city and played the role of wanderer and vagabond for a while, eventually ending up in Field of Sorrow quite truly by accident. She is lost, but ok with that. When one has no destination, the journey takes you where you are going...
Backstory: The dark places of this world nonetheless have specs of light within them, struggling, desperate, fearful. It was to bring comfort and aid to these people that Rurik had left his kin and home, years ago. One dwarf may not be able to change the darkness, yet his light may be a beacon to the good within others. Though he did not belong to any organized church or faith, he made sure to maintain contacts within several whose tenets he agreed with. Recently one of his friends, a cleric of Kelemvor, tipped him off about a place known for being haunted - the Fields of Sorrow - and asked him to look into reports of unquiet dead there, and put them to rest if he finds any. It was as good a goal as any, so off he went...

Backstory (Include why you are in the Fields of Sorrow)
Priha has lived on their own for a long time, driven into hermitage by cruel enemies hunting them relentlessly for forgotten secrets. However, lately, the storms have drawn Priha out of hiding and back into the world. They have dreams filled with lightening and demands of strength, not cowardice - they have found themselves capable again of drawing on Kord's gifts, though they are more used to struggling and fighting than healing. They were drawn into the Underdark by rumors of their hunters trading with the derro - no more could Priha hide away from them; if they wanted to be part of the world, they would have to take the fight to the hunters.
However, once there, the influx of fiendish creatures and the arrival of Orcus in the Fields of Sorrow has ensured Priha's stay in Gracklestug has been extended indefinitely, as they cannot leave in good conscience. So, they fight where they can, scout where they can't, and help others through the now-violent Fields where needed.

While serving in the military he started developing values that all life is sacred, but in order to protect good from evil you must be willing to kill those would destroy the lives of others. He became a follower of Bahamut trying to spread justice through the land. Eventually, he became a captain in the army teaching is men to treat races equally as they have the same rights to life as Dragonborns. Other factions of the military didn't like his teachings, and one day set a trap that resulted in the death of his men holding Ghesh responsible for their deaths.
