You have been low on money for a long time. All of you have lived on separate islands for a while, until you decided to join the pirate crew of the Kohu. The Kohu was recently ambushed by their rival crew, and has been looking for new members, as there are six important roles gone. The Quartermaster, the cook, the surgeon, the sailing master, the boatswain, and the powder monkey. The main crew consists of five people and the Captain, and the Kohu is low on storm bottles. This means it won’t be able to fly in the sky, so you must find a bottled storm on the legendary Storming Island. You’re also being hunted by an empire ship, called the Adelio, and the rival pirate crew, the Ragno. 

Nebula is a land full of floating islands and sky pirates. It has two parts, the sky, and the sea. The sea is covered in mist that can only be penetrated by light, and it is constantly storming. There are a few oceanic islands. Then there are the sky islands, which are powered by storms and lightning itself. Adventurers are required to bottle a storm every year to power their island. There are also skyships that are powered by bottled storms, some are operated by the army, some are operated by the Empire. Nebula is mostly controlled by the Tempête Empire. The world is flat, and the water is infinite. The islands on the water also float from the power of bottled storms. The Tempête Empire mostly controls the sky, while the Pirates control the seas. Their main island, Pirate’s Rest, is in the sea and also has a few locations in the sky. The Pirates know better than to attack the Empire, but they sometimes prey on the smaller countries, like Oakstorm and Hybridge. Oakstorm is in the Sea, and Hybridge is in the sky at the very edge of the empire. The empire is extremely territorial, and is currently at war with all the rest of the countries in the sky, and the pirates. The Empire is allied with Oakstorm. The pirates mostly serve as treasure hunters, searching for things to make themselves rich. A pirate is only loyal to themselves and their ship/fleet, but they all have the same territory and lair. There is a lot of infighting within the pirates, as they bicker over sections of territory. Not all pirates are bad, like the crew you will be joining. They don’t raid innocent people for fun, they do it because they need to to survive. They hunt for treasure on the coast, and trade with other pirates. There are however a few bad apples on the tree, like the Ragno, a legendary pirate ship full of vile pirates. 

Ships: Ships use the Space Galleon stat blocks from Spelljammer 

Firearms: Renaissance firearms only. Pistol and Musket.

Starting Items: General class starting items, 50 GP.  The ship is fully equipped with food, ammo, and medical supplies, but in the journey, you will occasionally have to go and buy food at Pirates Rest. Start with one uncommon magic item.

Backstory: Venti, now 16, was born above on board and raised on a pirate ship. She lives and breaths the pirate life. But her dark secret is that she is in love with the captain Ragno. She keeps a picture of him close to her heart. No, she's never met him, but she hopes to some day. "He can't be as bad as the stories say; could he?"

I'll bite. I have an idea for a subclass that might be a bit strong but I have a cool idea to nerf it if you think it's too powerful

Name: Devian Flemberge

Species: human 

Class: Ashen Warden(Ranger subclass I homebrewed)

Demien was a child when he came upon a demon and in some circumstance he barely remembers he managed to fight it off but not well enough to escape unscathed. His skin bore marks of fire eating away at skin and ash flaking from those scars constantly. His eyes also grew to be a shade of grey after this incident and he regularly wore a blindfold because of the way his eyes would react to sights around him flaring up with pain when he used his eyes to view things. But he found solace in his curse which allowed him to see by feeling where his ash was and controlling it to mislead distract or escape those who thought of him as demonspawn or possessed by one. He is fairly emotionally sensitive about what happened to his caretaker that his parents assigned to him to protect him from the people and others who would try to silence the demonspawn before any harm could be done to them. ANy attempt to bring it up will make him go taught like a sail in the wind immediately and he shuts down harder than a clamp. refuses to kill unless necessary.

Has surprising affinity with small and precise fire arms good at hitting non lethal blows with a weakened pistol or immediate death shots by hitting arteries. (he would never resort to the second though... at least currently.) Hi bowmanship is also unmatched and he won competitions as the "blind devil" to pay for his family's food and lodging. Not the gratest with a dagger but knows how to hamstring or otherwise cripple threats in non-lethal ways. 

If this don't work for your campaign I have another strong character with an even more crippling weakness that would be really fitting for this campaign

Name: Calishite or Cal for short

Class: Monk(10)/Cleric(10) but to start its monk (3)

Species: Human 

Backstory:

The first time Cal met the high cleric, he was on the run. Their parents didn't like Cal leaving Bard School, which cost them money, and then smacked both of them with a flute.

The high cleric had been understanding; they had told Cal that their name was Eevret, then took them into the temple of Liua. They taught Cal for the next six years. However, he never revealed his real name to any of them, as his real name was Calishite. Eevret was a monk, so Cal was taught the ways of a monk.

Cal's real dream since he was a child was to become a cleric of Liua, which he did.

Cal was forced to leave the temple because they went bankrupt, so Cal's quest is for money to help the temple come back

Backstory: phann has lived his whole life among the Elfs, and now that he's at the age when he can claim adulthood, he felt unprepared. He now ventures forth looking to find experience, adventure, meaning, and a good adult name. he has studied swords, bows and spells so he's ready to face the world. He also hates water. like a lot.

Class: Artificer

Species: Wood Golemborn

Backstory: Barkley was the person in charge of taking care of the ship and equipment and keeping it all in good shape. He can fix things, or with the right tools, make things from raw materials. But the ship Barkley served on had the bad luck to run into the Ragno while in the open sea. Barkley was the only survivor of that encounter, and he survived only because he couldn't drown or starve until he could be rescued by another ship. Barkley is now looking for a berth on another ship. While his needs are few, he is happiest when busy. Also he needs to tools and material to repair the water damage from a long float in the sea.
