You are the last survivors of the cataclysm of Ragnarök, the final war that shattered the heavens and sundered the world tree. The old gods are no more, their thrones reduced to dust, their voices mere whispers in the void. Yet from the ashes of the fallen realms, a new land has risen—Nyrgard, forged in the embers of the past, a realm of both ruin and rebirth, where destiny awaits those bold enough to seize it.
You are a sworn protector of Alaric the last king of Midgard. Landing on the shores of this strange new land you will shape the future of humanity in the world Beyond the Ragnarök. You will play out the first year of this fledgling colony with each new week bringing fresh challenges for you to face and overcome. Some weeks will pass in a flash, others will require more attention as you fight for the survival of your people under the rule of king Alaric.
Looking for up to 5 level 1 human characters (2014/2024 either is fine)
Please put my name in the hat. Only have access to 2014+ stuff and 2024 Core. Was thinking of 2024 Human Druid (Land, if survives to level 3). Can begin character creation once I know which method you prefer.
Ill let you fill in the backstory as it relates to the situation, since its your little world. I'll just assume I've been doing my tribal duties per the standard social contract for as long I've been bald and that's my whole life.
Thank you for all the interest. I will be giving recruitment another day and then sending a DM to the chosen players. Link a character sheet if you want to be considered.
As far as backgrounds go, you are all refugees from the Ragnarök, enlisted into the Kings inner circle due to your loyalty and skill. You can flavour this however you wish :)
In the meantime, any other questions just drop in a post here.
For set up I prefer standard array or point buy (with a starting feat) and you can have what ever non-magical gear you like as long as you can swim ashore with it ;D
By all rights, Leif should have drowned. It was by luck and by selfless acts of others much stronger than he that kept him afloat while they all struggled ashore. As he choked out the seawater that sprayed from nose and throat, he tried to utter thanks to nearby comrades. Somehow he had gained favor amongst these heroic survivors. Even though he lacked the physical prowess of his peers, his love for King Alaric had not gone unnoticed.
@Dreamhobbit - A few questions about your worldbuilding here:
Is your Beyond the Ragnarök campaign just a way to create a post-apocalyptic D&D setting that's focused on humans having to rebuild society from scratch? Or will this campaign take inspiration from some other media, such as The Northman (film), Vikings (TV series), The Witcher (novel/games/TV series), or Skyrim (game)?
You said "human characters." Have these 5 humans ever seen elves or dwarves or fairies? Were non-human species common and known to exist but just not in their region? Or were they the stuff of myth and legends (e.g., elves in Alfheim and the giants in Jotunheim) but not something anyone would expect to encounter in the real world?
What was the pre-Ragnarök world like? Was it more like a low-fantasy, low-magic Mythic Europe, similar to history but with fantasy monsters lurking in the wilderness? Or was it a land full of magic and adventure and monsters, like Kobold Press's Midgard?
How prevalent was magic pre-Ragnarök? And what is the attitude of the common folk in our region toward spellcasters, like clerics, druids, and wizards?
What was the party's experience of Ragnarök? Did we suddenly find ourselves fighting side-by-side with the literal gods against legendary monsters, like giants and dragons? Or did we just experience it like some sort of natural disaster (i.e., the land broke, the seas boiled, everything that once was has been lost, etc.) that our local skald poetically (but accurately) describes as an epic battle among the gods?
Is divine magic available after Ragnarök? If so, would a cleric follow the old gods, or would they be trying to establish worship of a brand new pantheon?
I'm interested. Some of my existing PbP games ended suddenly this month.
Character ideas (mostly assuming the 2024 rules):
Warrior Probably one of King Alaric's men who survived Ragnarök, but it could also be interesting if he's a warrior from another clan who is working to prove himself and be accepted by King Alaric. I could take the basic idea in various directions, depending on party composition and what type of warrior fits best with the campaign setting. For example:
Barbarian (Berserker and World Tree both seem appropriate) - classic Viking raider
Fighter (maybe Battle Master, but the Barrow Guard might also make sense, if allowed) - less durable than a barbarian but maybe a more skilled tactician
Paladin (not sure, never played a paladin before!)
Warlock This character only recently became a warlock: as Ragnarök plunged the world into destruction and ruin, they were sure that they would die. But then a Power answered their desperate cry for help. Now, they're alive in Nyrgard and learning to use their powers. But what deal have they made? What is the Power who answered their call? And what will it expect of them? I've never played a warlock character before, and this one would probably take more work from both me and the DM to figure out. But warlock is a flexible class, and I think that I can take this concept in a lot of different directions, depending on the campaign and party.
Celestial patron - one of the new gods saved them to help heal the people and usher in the new world. Can they live up to their patron's expectations for them?
Archfey patron - one of the Fey from Alfheim or even a Jötunn from Jotunheim was able to save them but now expects something in return. Maybe their patron wants more influence for their kind in Nyrgard than they had before Ragnarök?
Fathomless (2014) patron - especially appropriate if this campaign will involve adventuring across Nyrgard aboard a longship. Their patron saved them from drowning in the roiling sea during Ragnarök. (Maybe it was even the spirit of the world serpent itself that saved them?) Now the warlock always feels the call of the open sea, and whenever they touch the water, they feel the terrible power of the Entity lurking in the dark depths.
Great Old One / Fiend - More of a generic warlock. Perhaps Ragnarök awakened something or opened the world to a new entity from another realm? Their patron may want help to emerge fully into this new world.
Brother Medisans Frontier was a researcher and historian for the temple to Odin, the Allfather. His specialty was documenting medical ailments and their remedies, but was also drawn towards the runic magic that Odin had gained from the World tree, Yggdrasil. As the cataclysm of Ragnorak consumed the land and the heavens, he hoped to save what he could. What little survived, he seeks to gather in order to restore a collection in the new lands, Nyrgard. He has sought to align himself with Alaric the last king of Midgard in the desire to seek out that knowledge.
A Sailor in the royal navy before Ragnorak's destruction, Finni wasn't the highest on the totem pole but he did gain the Kings favor by consistently getting assigned to serving his Alaric when aboard. Finni had to display his skill with duel rapiers on one of the first voyages being part of Alaric's detail which helped win the favor and ultimately lead to the future assignments. Now that thier world had been flipped on its head and Finnigan luck seemed to put him in the right place at the right time to survive the downfall and find his way back to King Alaric's service.
Yes the premise here is a human colony surviving the first year in a new land after the Ragnarök. Nyrgard is a world I write and play in a lot and I very much wanted to explore the beginning of human civilisation on this new continent. That said taking some inspiration from the franchises you mentioned (though not directly lifting elements) is a good idea.
These humans lived through the Ragnarök so they would have seen and been aware of most of the above. They have seen gods and demons die, they have fought with and alongside elves and dwarves. Norse mythology is their lived history and some of it may re-emerge in this new land.
What was the pre-Ragnarök world like? Was it more like a low-fantasy, low-magic Mythic Europe, similar to history but with fantasy monsters lurking in the wilderness? Or was it a land full of magic and adventure and monsters, like Kobold Press's Midgard? I will leave it up to the players to decide how much or how little of the fantastic elements of Midgard they were exposed to. That world is dead so their memories are their own, as long as it remains in keeping with the mythology.
How prevalent was magic pre-Ragnarök? And what is the attitude of the common folk in our region toward spellcasters, like clerics, druids, and wizards? Magic was present and accepted, in fact encouraged in the war of the Ragnarök. In the escaping fleet it is a rare thing with most powerful heroes having spent their lives on the front lines. Who knows what the prevailing attitudes will be in the new world. It might be an element we explore depending on how the game pans out.
The war of the gods was accompanied by war in the mortal realms, humans fought the terrors of the underworld, trolls, giants and other foes, but yes the final breaking of the world was akin to a natural disaster from which the last men could only flee. That said at level one it is safe to say that our characters have not been toe to toe with a dragon or fought any great foes. They will have been skilled servants, students or foot solders not great generals. They are what is left.
Is divine magic available after Ragnarök? If so, would a cleric follow the old gods, or would they be trying to establish worship of a brand new pantheon? The god-touched exist though most have been driven to madness by the loss of their patrons gods. They do however, retain their power... if anyone rolls a character with divine magic we will probably have a quick chat in DM to discuss how it works, same with Warlocks and other classes relying on greater powers.
Thanks, @Dreamhobbit. That gives me a better sense of what kind of game this will be and helps me solidify my character ideas and how my character might fit into the world.
Custom Background w/ feat: Strike of the Giants (either Cloud, Hill, or Stone Strike)
Proficiencies in Vehicles (Water) and Smith's Tools
Human Feat: Tough
Background: Hróðgeirr was big and strong from a young age. To put his size to use, he was apprenticed to a smith in his youth. Once he came of age, he spent much of his time on longships on long raids away from his home town (petty raids against opposing clans, etc.). Later, he fought in the battles of Ragnorök, mostly against the giants. (And he seems to have absorbed some of the giants' primal power, which manifests in his most desperate fights.) He is battle-hardened, but most of those who fought by his side are now dead. How did he come to King Alaric's settlement?
Option 1: Hróðgeirr was the son of one of Alaric's former (before Ragnorök) advisors. His father and other immediately family didn't survive to see Nyrgard. King Alaric has tried to ensure that Hróðgeirr finds a place in the new community, and Hróðgeirr views Alaric as a father figure. Of course, Hróðgeirr doesn't have his father's keen mind, but...
Option 2: Hróðgeirr is from a different clan where his family enjoyed a position of power and influence, but Ragnorök changed all of that. He somehow survived the last battle, beating against the sea in anger when his ship was shattered and sunk by the giants. He doesn't remember how he made it to dry land, but he found himself alive and alone. He wandered for days, struggling to survive on his own, until he finally stumbled into the rough encampment that Alaric was organizing. Some of the people were suspicious of the big stranger, but... (for both options) ...King Alaric knows how to use people's potential. Once Hróðgeirr recovered from his wounds, the king put him to work in the smithies and helping to build a new town / fort for Alaric's people. And the king knows that there is still danger in Nyrgard, so he's glad to have the big warrior with them, ready to rally to the defense of the town. The king has heard that Hróðgeirr is a brave (foolhardy?) warrior, and there's even a rumor that Hróðgeirr may be Jötunn-touched.
Warlock, work-in-progress, trying to incorporate the Rune Shaper feat
I imagine Silfrún as a slightly older woman who's clearly a "foreigner." (For example, her native language was different, and she had to learn the common tongue of Alaric's people after Ragnorök. There is also some visible sign that marks Silfrún as an "outsider." Will work with the DM on that, but perhaps she just has some feature that people are superstitious about, such as black hair when the community is mostly blond or red-headed or heterochromia or a white streak in her hair or a prominent birthmark.)
Silfrún has not spoken of how she survived Ragnorök. After the cataclysm, she was already there on land when the other survivors started washing ashore. She helped to bind wounds, find shelter for people, and make them food. Alaric's people were thankful for her help, but as time passed, they started talking about her odd behavior. Silfrún keeps to herself in a little hut at the edge of the community, not socializing much. She spends time exploring the wilderness and making strange crafts. She's a pretty woman, even if she's not young, but she has rejected all suitors. It is known that she has access to some magic, but she's clearly not a skald, a priestess, or even a druid. People say that she consorts with elves. Or that her mother was an elf!
Despite the gossip, Silfrún is still accepted as part of Alaric's community in Nyrgard, and even the ones who gossip about her will go to her for help when they're not sure who else to ask.
Updated to expand and correct the original post. I also wanted to be clear: Based on the other submissions in the thread, it looked like the party could use a tanky melee fighter, so I put more time into Hróðgeirr. But if the submissions that were sent to you directly already take care of the melee front line, then please consider my Warlock instead.
Recruitment is now closed. If you are in the game you will have received a private message from me containing the campaign link so that you are able to link your character sheet. I am sorry that I could not choose you all and would like to thank you for your interest.

If we're allowed to mix and match legacy (Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants) and 2024 content, I have the start of a couple of options:
(for both options)
...King Alaric knows how to use people's potential. Once Hróðgeirr recovered from his wounds, the king put him to work in the smithies and helping to build a new town / fort for Alaric's people. And the king knows that there is still danger in Nyrgard, so he's glad to have the big warrior with them, ready to rally to the defense of the town.
