Who knows why adventurers are drawn together? The lust for gold, a common foe, or the whimsy of fate? Pull up a stool, stoke the hearth, and let YOUR story begin!
This will be an Adventurer's League (AL) running of the introductory AL companion module to Dragon Heist. It is *not* the full Dragon Heist book, but a related, self-contained adventure, one where the players themselves pick the type of story they want to tell.Seriously -- those selected will make some choices at the outset of the adventure, choices that will shape the direction of the module. It is a different approach than most AL modules, an attempt to balance the three pillars (combat/roleplay/exploration) a bit more than is done in a typical short AL adventure, and one that, for PbP, is going to require a different sort of play style.
Roleplaying is not only encouraged, it is a fundamental part of the adventure. There may be times when you will be asked, specifically to do tasks in character, and according to your character’s flaws/bonds/ideals.
Not every situation can be handled via combat in Waterdeep, nor should it be. Fight when necessary, but playing creatively to your character may often take you further.
There may be stretches where the players may go back and forth with each other, with limited prompting from the DM. Players need to be prepared to play off each other.
Starting characters only. This adventure is for 1st level AL-legal characters only. (Information here; in general terms, it means use point buy or array to establish your abilities, and use only one Wizards published book other than the Player's Handbook to create your character. No UA allowed. If you have questions, feel free to PM me.)
This is a four hour Season 8 module, which means it will follow all Season 8 rules regarding experience and treasure.
I have not tried Once in Waterdeep in PbP, but I suspect its roleplay nature means it may suffer from prolonged inactivity more than most adventures. If you cannot post at least daily, please do not apply for this particular game.Ideally, we I will look for compatible time zones, play styles, and post frequencies. After application, I would like the opportunity to message privately with people before picking players for the game. Also, the game will likely be capped with less than the AL maximum of 7 players, as the chances of inactivity from a player go up dramatically with each player added. If you are not picked this time, there is always next time.(That said, I am on a trip that may not have connectivity, October 27th-November 3rd, causing one extended hiatus myself. If that happens, I apologize in advance.)
Content sharing will be enabled for this campaign
Applications will stay open until September 18th, and hopefully the game will commence the day after. For an application, please include:

A DCI number is not required to apply, but you will need one to play in the game if accepted. If you have any questions about the campaign, Adventurer’s League, or the application, feel free to PM Me.
1) Will there be content sharing for this adventure?
2) Since I'm not overly familiar with AL, how do spell lists work with the PHB+1 rule? If I want to make a Drow(PHB) Bladesinger(SCAG) for example, would that mean I'm limited to only the spells in those books and thereby miss out on everything in Xanathar's guide?
For #1 - yes, I will enable content sharing for this campaign. (Updated initial post to reflect that.) All sources are allowed, except Ravinca and Eberron, subject to the PHB+1 rule.
For #2 - Speaking of which, you are correct in what the Adventurer's League PHB+1 rule means. If you make a Bladesinger, you are restricted to PHB and SCAG for your choices. Wizards have one loophole other classes do not -- if they find spellbooks or scrolls from other sourcebooks or players at their table, they may scribe them, though the gold to fund that is also at a premium in Adventurer's League.
Thanks for the prompt response! Looks like "Kinnin Xarrash" might have to sit this one out then. I'm definitely interested in playing, as I've yet to get to play in Waterdeep, but I'll have to think about my character submission.
As to the last three submission points though...
Time Zone: CST (Memphis, TN, USA)
Estimated Post Frequency: I'm playing in several PbP's at the moment, and I'm regularly checking up on all of them, so I'd easily be able to post multiple times per day if called for and definitely the once-per-day minimum.
D&D/PbP Experience: Some limited exposure to 3.5, but I've been playing and DMing (mostly DMing) 5th Edition for almost 2 years now, with a range of players spanning from 8 years old up to mid-fifties. Been posting here on DDB for a significant portion of that time, with several PbP's under my belt, including my current involvement in "Lost Magics: A Premade of Epic Proportions," which is one of the longest running PbP's here on the site.
Character Background: A wanderer from Kara-tur with a strong connection to the wind spirit Akadi. He fights with a katana and is accompanied by a silver feathered familiar who takes various different bird forms.

Estimated Post Frequency: 2-5 posts most every day, barring emergencies and such
Experience: Just under 2 years observing and playing D&D 5e, including a few months of AL play last year. As far as PbP experience, I am definitely a rookie.

I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
Character Class: Rogue ( if level up allows he will go swashbuckler)
Character Bakcground: Raised in the streets he finally made his way to Waterdeep docks and Skullport making a living as a sailor and, eventually, a pirate. For a more detailed background, please open the spoiler.
Raised in the streets of Waterdeep, abandoned by his mother when he was only three years old, a prostitue at the docks who was used as a token of gratitude of an archwizard to a great demon in one deal, he was raised by the street.
He didn't know the most tender side of life, going from hospice ot hospice due to his heritage. If there was something missing, he was to blame. If there was a fight, he was to blame, even if he was the one with a closed eye and a lip broken. That continued until he was 8 years old, and he finally ended up at little hospice ran by a Ilmater's old cleric. This old man showed him tenderness, and cared about him and the 15 more orphans, most of them humans but there was a couple of half-orcs there too, as if they were his own children. That was the best year of his childhood. Finally a merchant wanted to expand his possesions and bought the property of the hospice. He still remember the night that the merchant's guards came and took the old man by force. The heart of the poor old man couldn't take it and died in the mud of the street. Seeing that merchant laughing and taking what he wanted just because he had the money to do it was it.
From that point on he swore to himself that someday he will have even more money than that merchant. He spent the next years stealing and conning what he could. He tried to help the other orphans, but little by little they all moved away or died due to illness or fights that went south.
The search of the city guard for thieves and his necesity to move drove him to the docks, where he found jobs at some ships from time to time wich helped him to dissapear when things went to hot. There he found, finally, a place as a member of a pirate crew aboard a little but fast ship called "The Weeping Lady". They operated from Skullport and sold their exploits at the vibrant docks of the city. It was there that he met and befriend Garrick "boots" Franwise, another urchin like him that had managed to be one of the harbor masters of the port, helping Dekket to sell the things he “obtained” and sharing the profits. During a pirate incursion, Dekket saved Garrick from become a slave and since then they had kept a healthy and profitable relationship.
Unfortunately, one night after a particulary succesful ride aboard the Lady, he gambled too much for his own good. And he lost. With a debt higher that he could pay to one of the most hideous gang leaders at the ports, a goliath called "Half-Scar", he needs a job that help him pay his debt, or the healing spells he is gonna need soon...

Experience: Playing D&D and RPG since... a lot of time. Have experience both at table and in PbP.
Character Name: Qaidhaynth, the Guardian of Everlasting Sand (Goes by Hayn, like Hey You)
Character Class (Brand new level 1s only, must be AL legal): Rogue (will happily go Bard, if there are too many rogues in the party!), Variant Human if allowed/Half-Elf if it is not
Character background: A proverbial fish out of water, though one that might be missing a few scales, Hayn is constantly just a little confused about why things weren't the way they were when he last past through. Outspoken and opinionated, he has a bitter and begrudging distaste for most lawmakers, but is always eager to offer a helping hand. Traveling with his friend, Brynn, Hayn believes that Waterdeep will be the solution to all his problems, and dear sweet lord, he has so many.
Or at least, that was what he remembers. He was supposed to be a young dragon.
A Brass Dragon, with the sort of scales he enjoyed bragging about, and the type of horde that he'd spend even more time bragging about. He was tasked by a wise ally and mentor to guard a mysterious relic for a brief period, until she could settle some business. It would take his time away from hording small talk with witty travelers, but Hayn bore the burden of responsibility with grace and poise and a hell of a lot of boredom.
Cut to a few months ago, when he woke up to find himself trapped in a small, scrawny meatsuit, his powers out of reach, the relic gone, his tower sporting decades (centuries?) of disarray, and Brynn trying to steal anything shiny that time hadn't claimed. It was a fun way to make a friend - after the initial wrestling match.
The hows and whys are a mystery, but Hayn is all too eager to sort it out. After a few weeks on the road, the pair heard that Waterdeep held the sort of arcane information and power to shed light on his situation.
Time Zone: AEST
Estimated post frequency: Twice a day or more on most days, except Thursdays because those are awful. I work strange hours, and that's worked in my favor with other games!
D&D/PbP Experience: Very little PbP experience, but about a year in DnD, with some DMing under my belt. More experience with other tabletop games, but I'm a big fan of the RP aspect of games, and bringing depth and humor to a story is a big deal to me. I keep hearing that Waterdeep's going to be great for social puzzles, and I'm excited about that. Also sometimes, just stabbing things is fun, and I've never brawled in PbP so I would like to try it.
Character Class: Wood Elf Cleric, Trickery Domain, level 1
Character background: Faybagz, Glory's older bother was set to inherit the Balfin estate and legacy which was fine with Glory, third eldest of the Balfin elf clan. Glory was content to make the Church his profession as a Cleric under the Divine banner of Thoth to learn Wisdom. However when his stubborn older brothers turned on each other and Faybagz was killed by Charbagz, the second eldest, Glory's devotion became confused and he turned to the less predictable Divine guidance of Tymora (Lady Luck) as he tried to sort out his own path to understanding amid the turmoil of his broken family.

Character Class (Brand new level 1s only, must be AL legal): Dragonic-Blood Sorcerer/Human Variant or Half-Elf
Character background: Brynn is a young man with a problem. He was a charlatan, a brash young adventurer with a long and glorious string of victories over dangerous foes and legendary beasts - except none of it was true. It all made a lovely story though, especially when he was using it to impress a pretty face or grift a few gold coins. When he took a job to recover some loot from an "abandoned" tower, he took the job with swagger. He didn't find any treasure, but he did find a very confused man which was good enough. He just wasn't expecting a sudden strange brass-colored scaley rash that never seemed to go away or the weird and unfamiliar prickle of power beneath his skin. Hopefully, it was just some sort of magical flu?

D&D/PbP Experience: This is my first PbP, but I've played D&D 5e for about a year as a player and DM, and other systems for a little bit longer!
Character background: Valafar is the youngest of the four Szereban siblings. The oldest is Temperance, followed by the twins Mercy and Prudence. Each is a respectable mage in their own right. It's their lineage, of course! The Szereban's bloodline is potent with magic, giving rise to powerful mages of any variety that have innate magic coursing through them. That is, of course, except for Valafar himself. He's never had what his parents refer to as a "True Spark" of magic in him. Any magic he has is worked for, toiling and pouring over tomes and scrolls. Valafar wont let himself be forgotten. He refuses to be hidden away and coddled like some inept, mundane blaggard!

Alright, here's my submission, sans the details that I already provided further up the thread.
Character Name: Caelynn Amakiir
Character Class: Moon-Elf Wizard (Planning on Bladesinger Tradition)
Character Backstory: A strangely young elf to be off traveling alone, Caelynn just recently arrived in Waterdeep with a trade caravan from Silverymoon, apparently fleeing some sort of personal troubles there. She has a keen wit, a deft hand with a blade, and some magical training, but at present she's uncertain what to do with herself, though she has heard of a school for mages here in Waterdeep that has piqued her interest.
Edit: Character withdrawn for use in another campaign. See below for replacement submission.
Character background: the middle of 5 sons of a blacksmith, Xavier always yearned to see the world. Without much room to help out at home he has set off to see the world and make some money to send back home

Exoerience: heavily involved with Dnd pbp games for the last several months. Just recently started dming my own game.
Flattery is my preferred trick for getting what I want. I lie about almost everything, even when there’s no good reason to.
Ideals
Independence. I am a free spirit—no one tells me what to do. (Chaotic)
Bonds
A powerful person killed someone I love. Some day soon, I’ll have my revenge.
Flaws
I’m convinced that no one could ever fool me the way I fool others.
An orphan of the streets, Arvel quickly learned that his good looks and silver tongue could allow him to get away with almost anything. A low-level conman, he prides himself on never taking anything that wasn't freely given.
A year ago, he was ready to hang it all up and go straight. Because he'd met Luala and wanted to marry her. On the night he planned to propose, Arvel approached Luala sitting on a stone bench in a park. When he touched her shoulder, she fell to the ground. Her throat had been slashed and her dress was dyed deep red with her blood.
Arvel turned to shout for help but he stopped suddenly. A bloody dagger had mysteriously appeared in his hand. Stunned by this, Arvel didn't hear the approach of the watchmen.
Seized, jailed, and set to be put on trial for murder he sat in his cell weeping over his fate and his lost love.
That's when She appeared. The woman appeared Elven, but was more beautiful than any elf Arvel had ever seen before. The offer was simple, Arvel would be given his freedom and a small measure of power to continue his conniving ways and in exchange he would render Her service when She required.
Seeing no other way out, Arvel accepted and became a Warlock in service to the Archfey woman.
The next morning he was released from prison. The guards explained that a common street thug had come forward and confessed to the murder. Arvel took all he had saved and set out for a life of adventure to escape his pain and grow his power.
Character Background Look, I could tells ya about how, ummm 20 years ago? 10? whatever, doesn't matter. What matters is I was some great adventurer who saved many a beast, and slayed many a peoples... wait a minute reverse that I saves people and slayed beasties, but you don't wanna hear about that. You wanna know how ol Saraba gave up that old life and became the wise ol Monk he is today, to learn what the secrets of life is, and atone for....**sigh**. Well I can tell ya, but ya don'ts want to hear about that either. What yall wants to hear is what I'm doing here, how I can help you, and how the hell did I know you were needing help . Well I'll gladly tell you that right after this drink here. You're buying by the way.

D&D/PbP experience: D&D Im a old school gamer of several RPGs, but stopped playing around 2000, wanting to start back up again. PbP experience is none though, all my experience is from tabletop. I'm a quick learner though, and very motivated to learn.
Character Background: Cassandra's early years were spent in an orphanage in Waterdeep's Southern Ward, but she doesn't talk about those days much. She much prefers to talk about the years she spent before the mast, serving aboard a private merchant vessel, the Silver Phoenix. Those were the years that shaped her the most, taught her the value of camaraderie, and gave her a sense of purpose in life. Now however, her past seems to be coming back to haunt her. Suddenly developing the ability to manifest and control fire might seem like a boon to some people, but for someone living on a wooden ship? Not so much. So now Cassie finds herself back in Waterdeep, struggling both to master her newfound abilities and discover more about her past...and where those abilities might have come from.
Character background: A frail and sickly child who was taken in by an Elf and sequestered away from the rest of the world. His Guardian was kind but busy, leaving Rue alone for long stretches of time, during which he was granted access to many sources of knowledge and opportunities for learning. As he grew, his interest was drawn toward studying the mind, and he has concentrated his magical abilities on this, studying spells that affect the mind, rather than the body. His Elvish Guardian continued to treat Rue as a child long after he'd fully grown, and this along with the lack of other social contact left him quite frustrated. Rue was finally free to leave his 'home' after the recent death of his Guardian. Though his sickly childhood has left his body rather frail, his mind is unaffected, and he is eager to learn more with his newfound freedom.
Time Zone: CST
Estimated post frequency: I am injured and off work, so.. a lot. I'm due for surgery on September 28th, though, which may make me a bit slow for a couple days.
D&D/PbP Experience: I'm still fairly new to DnD. I'm currently playing two other PbP DnD games. The first (Goliath Barbarian) with friends who know much more than I do and help me out by answering all my random questions. The second (Half Elf Rogue) is just another PbP I found the same way as this one. Playing with my friends is very heavily focused on roleplay, because... well, we met by roleplaying and it's what we like to do most. I've been roleplaying since pretty much the first time I found another person roleplaying online, probably around 20 years ago. I'm not especially familiar with AL rules, so please forgive me if I get it wrong - I will correct it immediately!

Hope to see you at the Yawning Portal!
A couple of quick questions...
