The Long Road is a storied causeway, connecting Waterdeep to the inland cities of the north, first Amphail, and then further. It is the beginning of winter, and the air is cold, travelers on the road are hurrying lest they get caught in snow, or night, or both. To the south, the lure is strong towards Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, though even she is getting ready to close the gates come winter.
Emerging from a cart track onto the road is a motley party. First out on the road is a tall, rough human, dressed in leathers and fur, two shining battle axes swinging from his belt. His skin is laced with blue tattoos, and he is smiling and laughing at something his companions have said. This is Jorin, barbarian, warrior, Dwarf-friend and smith from northern clans.
Close behind him is a solidly built, gray skinned half orc, the source of the joke, laughing loudly at his jest. He is dressed against the cold, with a large shield slung across his back, and an enormous mace swinging at his side. He is Drusk, pledged to Lliira, as steadfast a companion as any could wish for.
Third out is small figure, a halfling, bundled against the cold but still festooned with bow, quiver, the hilts of several weapons, and a bag of precious items. He is accompanied by an elderly Tiefling woman, and they are deep in conversation. He seems torn between the jokes being told ahead of him, the earnest conversation with his companion, the path north (to adventure?) and the road south, home. This is Hildigrim, curious, quick, startlingly intelligent, surprisingly distracted.
Fourth from the cart track is a tall, red scaled lizard man, his alien face somehow conveying a warm interest in the young Tiefling woman walking next to him, and the young human woman following just behind. He is carrying a heavy pack, pots, pans, and small bags hanging from it, some of them dripping a little curious ichor. Pascal is a gregarious sort, an adventurer, cook (chef!), and friend, always looking for new experiences.
The group gathers at the side of the Long Road, exchanging hugs and slapping backs, quiet words and grateful thanks. The young human woman, draped in her warm shawl, takes her leave first, heading north with a spring in her step. Then the two Tiefling women, young and old, make their farewells, turning and going back down the cart track towards where they all came from.
The four remaining, Jorin, Drusk, Hildigrim, and Pascal, hoist their packs, settle their weapons, and begin their trip back to Waterdeep.
Winter swirls around them, and flakes begin to fall from the sky, as the Long Road stretches ahead.

It is the morning after your celebratory feast. With so little strong drink available, you were all up pretty early, and have made good time. At this rate, you should make the North Gate just as dusk is falling, and then it's not far to your rooms at the Fiddly Pig. Pascal, of course, has no rooms there.

Hildigrim hops along behind Drusk, jumping from one big boot print in the dusting of snow to the next. His size, even smaller than the average halfling his age, adding to the visual of a small child at play. "I'm gonna miss those fair maidens," he says, his eyes watching the road for the next step. His pack and weapons jangle with each leap of his (proportionally) large, bare feet. "Do you think we'll ever see them again?" Abruptly changing the subject, Hildigrim asks the lizardfolk, "Hey, Pascal, are you lodging at the Fiddly Pig with us tonight? Where are you headed now?"
Pascal blinks his eyelids slowly as he takes in the sights of the long road, tilting his alligator-like head to Hildi, speaking in his usual dialect, “Yeah, think I will. As for where I’m headin’, our little vacation got me some fine ingredients. I’m thinkin’ that I’ll head back to the guild, drop off some of my spoils, maybe cook up a few new dishes. You never know what kinda flavors might jump out at ya till ya start cookin’.”

"What kind of guild?" Hildigrim asks, suddenly no longer concerned with Drusk's footsteps. "I've been considering joining a guild presently," the halfling says. "My brother, Fort, has already applied to the Master Mariners' Guild. My father is a member, so it's doubtless he'll be accepted. There are several guilds operating in the Dock Ward, where I'm from. The Black Boar Tribe and the Plague Rats are two active ones. The Boars are thuggish, though, so I think I'd prefer to be a Rat. The problem is I don't know how to get recommended. You wouldn't happen to be a member of the Plague Rats, would you? Probably not, given your talents. Are you in a magic guild?"
Pascal stares at Hildi for an uncomfortable amount of time, his eyes slowly blinking, until finally he speaks, “Nope! My passions ain’t in magic, but in the culinary arts. I’m primarily a member of the Baker’s Guild, but I’ll lend my talents to the butchers, the brewers, and sometimes I help out over in with the tanners. They tend to appreciate my talents the most. No, never had much of a taste for much else after I started cookin’.”
"Weapon tag, A fantastic idea!" Jorin says, roaring with laughter, "We started learning to fight at an early age in my tribe. Formally at eight, but earlier than that we use the game of tag in order to train the chase, closing distance, and striking."
"Hildi, have you thought of joining a smithing guild? Ringing the anvil yourself might not be the way to go, but you are clever and good with weapons. You could help recovered rare materials needed for masterworks."
"A smithing guild," Hildigrim repeats thoughtfully, testing the sound of it. "I don't know, Jorin. I'll look into it," the halfling says, giving the human a big smile. "Me in a smithing guild. I always thought of them as all brawn and no brains," he chuckles. "Sounds like a fit for you two," he laughs. Catching the look on Pascal's face, Hildigrim falters. "Oh, wait ... " His face drains of color, except for the rosy blotches on his wind-blown cheeks. Hurrying in front of Jorin and Drusk, he stumbles backwards, looking up at his much taller companions. "Hainard's hairy toes, I'm sorry, fellas! I didn't mean that. You two have brains. Lots of 'em. That's not what I meant!"
"How dare you, Hildigrim! You speak of all brawn and no brains... and leave me out?" Drusk playfully drops his fist on top of Hildi's head.
Drusk shakes his head at Pascal. "I can understand having a taste for the butchers and brewers. But the tanners? Their byproducts are rather noxious, and completely unpalatable."

The day passes pleasantly, if cold, as you share companionship on the road. Snow falls for several hours in the morning, gathering in small drifts, but then the clouds clear and in the bright sunlight the snow sparkles. You are passed a few times by riders, once by an enclosed cart making good time, it's single horse blowing steam as it trots by. But mostly the road is quiet. As you crest a small hill, you pause as the Waterdeep spreads before you. Still an hour or more away, its walls and cliffs are thrown into relief in the lowering sun. You are looking south towards the city, and despite the smoke rising from countless chimneys, the crisp air cuts through the haze.
At the near end, the Long Road merges with the High Road coming from the coastline, and continues through the North Gate and into Waterdeep. The Field Ward stretches east and west, it's low, noisome buildings (and people) kept from the rest of the city by the second set of city walls. Then Waterdeep proper begins, the well appointed North and Sea Wards leading into the more workaday wards in the southern part of the city. To the west (the right hand side from where you stand), Mount Waterdeep rises hard against the water, Castle Waterdeep and its towers at its feet, but still on a bluff above the rest of the city. At the mountain's crest you can see The Griffon, the massive "walking statue" that once protected the city from enemies. Here and there you can see the other statues, among them the God Catcher, sphere floating above his outstretched hand, fifty feet in the air, the kneeling giant Sahuagin by the coast, the tumbled Great Drunkard, and further south, the Hawkman, wings furled, and the stately Honorable Knight, staring protectively towards the harbor. From here, you can just make out the structures and dwelling build in and onto these statues.
Wheeling over the city, you catch the glint of armor from the famed Griffon Cavalry on patrol. At the far end of the city, in the Southern Ward, the South Gate lets the High Road back out and on to cities further south. The Dock Ward, where Hildi calls home, and the Trades Ward, where the Fiddly Pig is located, along with many of the trades guilds, are down at that end.
From here it seems peaceful, not the bustling, crowded, tremendous city it is. Of course, with winter coming on, trade and traffic both will be slowing. But there will still be plenty to see and do in the City of Splendors.
You shift your packs and start down the road to where the High Road meets it and enters Waterdeep.
OOC > Imagine Waterdeep as a fantastical city from nineteenth century Victorian England, complete with cobbled streets, tall houses, chimneys, lamplighters, carriages, etc. Here's a pic from the official adventure.
Drusk looks up at the Griffons flying overhead. "That talk with Pascal reminds me that I have a hankering for some chicken... I'll try to keep my appetite under control. There was one time when I had to be stopped from eating every chicken in the tavern." (grins, crooked half-orc teeth and all)
