I realize this is all of your first times playing D&D in a play-by-post setting and for some the first time playing D&D. I have included a couple of helpful items below to get you started.
1. I suggest you hit "Subscribe" by clicking "Tools" on this forum post. This will alert you when someone posts something new.
2. We are all busy. You can post as many times per day as you wish but please at least post every 24 hours. If we are in combat and you do not post within 24 hours I will take your turn for you.
4. As this will be a learning experience for me and you all I will post details and instructional as you are faced with things.
5. I will roll initiative for combat situations. In normal IRL games, each player rolls their own initiative. In PbP, most DMs have come to realize waiting for everyone to roll initiative is a big ole speed bump to the excitement. So, when a combat situation arises, I will roll initiative for all of you as well as the foes. I'll post the initiative order, and then we'll go through the list.
6. In combat, it is OK to pre-post. For example: if Prax is first and Nelvik is second, Nelvik can post their turn before Prax in case he's not going to be on again for several hours, and he doesn't want to hold everyone up. (Please excuse me if I'm using incorrect pronouns; I'm making assumptions.) Prax gets on and posts after Nelvik, but, technically, his turn happens before. If for some reason Prax's post makes Nelvik's turn impossible, I will see if altering it in a minor way will still make the turn usable. For instance, if Nelvik said he was going to attack the goblin on his turn, but Prax posted that he attacks the same goblin and kills it, if there's another enemy in striking range of Nelvik, I'll just shift the attack to the other foe. However, if there aren't any other foes within striking range, I'll declare Nelvik's pre-post null and ask him to make another post.
7. It's encouraged to be creative in your combat posts. Sometimes you only have a couple minutes to jump on, and you don't want to hold up combat, so you quickly post some rolls and head on your way. I'm not going to penalize you for that. However, if you have the time, describing the movement and action is so much more fun. On Critical Role (which some of you have mentioned watching), you know that Matthew Mercer does a lot of the description. The players basically say (though some do more) that they attack with their weapon and it does so much damage. Mercer then describes what the action looks like and what the results are. I can do some of that, and sometimes will, even if the player writes something fairly descriptive. Sometimes the result (whether the attack hits or misses or if the damage is enough to defeat the foe) will prompt me to alter or sometimes embellish on what the PC has written.
8. Please ask questions. And please don't get upset if I have to correct you. I started this campaign with the intent of teaching (and learning myself). In that same vein, if I forget your character should be taking half damage because you're raging, or that you have some other feature, please don't hesitant to point it out. Mercer's players help him along, and I will need you to help me from time to time as well. Some PbP DMs know their PCs' characters better than the PCs do. I'm not one of those DMs. I very easily forget small (and big) stuff. Especially when I'm trying to quickly craft a detailed post with several PCs' turns and some enemies' turns and get it all up in a reasonable amount of time. (Speaking of that, I try really hard to put "Still editing" at the top of posts I'm crafting. Many times, I have to post a partial post in order to get rolls and know whether something hits or how much damage a creature takes. So, if you come to the campaign and there's a post from me that starts with "Still editing", go do something else for a little while and then come back. The final post will have that line removed, and it's most likely safe to read.) So, let's all know we're helping each other out and not get offended if something we've done wrong is pointed out to us.
9. Many of you have not yet filled out your Player Backgrounds and that's OK as you are not sure if you like it or not. However, as I am confident you will get hooked the following items may help you when fleshing out your character details.
Now, in combination with the suggested characteristics of your class and the following questions, really flush out your character:
Where was the character born?
Who are their parents? Are the parents/family still alive?
What was your character doing before their adventuring life? (Includes information I gave above.)
Using this information, you should easily be able to fill in the character details, physical characteristics, personal characteristics and notes sections of the character sheet. Alignment options range from Lawful Good to Lawful Evil (visit http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?448542-Compliance-Will-Be-Rewarded-A-Guide-to-Lawful-Evil to read about how to play a Lawful Evil character cooperatively). Chaotic neutral might be difficult. We can discuss it.
A reminder: Personality traits provide a glimpse into the character’s likes, dislikes, accomplishments, fears, attitude, or mannerisms. An ideal is something that the character believes in or strives for above all else. A character’s bond represents a connection to a person, place, or event in the world — someone the character cares about, a place that holds a special connection, or a treasured possession. A flaw is a characteristic that someone else can exploit to bring the character to ruin or cause the character to act against his or her best interests.
Your character, as well as the other players, are in Neverwinter. You have all known each other for however long you decide. The idea is that you can either be old friends or fairly new friends, but you all know each other prior to the campaign starting. You are all brand new adventurers. When the story begins, you will find yourselves at a local tavern you all frequent, The Brawling Bard. The Bard is tended by a buxom and blond human called Tess (who seems to never take a day off). None of you have spouses, children, or aging parents to take care of, so while you may decide you have roommates or perhaps you still live at home, but with self-sufficient parents or grandparents, you have no dependents. You’re free to come and go as you please, but you do need money in order to live, so you’re anxious to begin your first job. Neverwinter isn’t a cheap place to live.
Another set of regulars at the Bard are Gundren, Nundro and Tharden Rockseeker. The dwarven brothers own the Three Picks Delving Co., a mining, salvaging and treasure-finding operation. Gundren, the eldest Rockseeker brother, is in Neverwinter almost all of the time, while Nundro and Tharden disappear for weeks and months at a time for “business”. The PCs and the Rockseekers are regular drinking buddies. And the card games you all play can sometimes get out of hand. Tharden is quite the shark. But it’s all in good fun. You’re close enough to be very comfortable with each other and feel loyalty toward each other.
The year is 1491. Neverwinter, also known as the City of Skilled Hands and Jewel of the North, is rising from the ashes. Lord Neverember’s efforts to restore Neverwinter’s glory are paying off, and she is slowly being reestablished as a center of civilization in the Sword Coast North. Neverwinter is a city full of opportunities, and as word spreads, merchants from both the North and the southern lands are becoming interested in trading with the city once again. The population count is rising in response.
Individuals of all races and backgrounds have begun to gather in Neverwinter. Some open shops, some encourage trade, some hide in the shadows and take what they want, and some are hired hands available to hunt monsters and rescue damsels in distress.
This morning, the climate is temperate, there is a pleasant hum of activity in the streets, and the smells of delicious meats being prepared for the noontime meal hang in the air. The usual prospect a new month generally brings is on everyone’s mind in the Brawling Bard, one of Neverwinter’s taverns. A trickle of patrons enter the perpetually warm, generally inviting building, acknowledging Tess, the barkeep’s, greeting. Tess is a blond-headed human woman with a pleasing figure: an ample bosom and wide hips. She’s dressed in green and brown today, her long hair tied back with a leather thong at her neck.
Among the patrons is a Brawling Bard regular, Gundren Rockseeker, a middle-aged dwarf of slightly-taller-than-average stature. He’s sitting alone at a table, a neglected mug by his elbow. He’s currently pouring over a map of the Sword Coast and a large pack rests nearby against the wall. Seeing Gundren study a map is not surprising since he is co-owner with his two brothers of the Three Picks Delving Co., a mining, salvage, and treasure finding operation.
OOC: Now introduce your character. What are they doing? What are they wearing? Oh... and WELCOME to the Lost Mines of Phandelver campagin!
“Hello friends” you hear as the group begins to form around the table... the voice seems to be high pitched and sounding almost like a small child. *you see a tall bar stool start to move towards the table followed by a small rustling of black hair that is barely visible beside the height of the table*. “I hear that you are forming a party for work in the area and would like to know if you needed the hand of a practicing wizard?” *the chair stops at the table and a small... gnome... climbs the bracing of the stool and bounds to the top*.
”pleased to meet you all!” The small gnome exclaims as he stands in the seat reaching eye level with most gathered at the table. “My name is Prax! And I’m in search of adventure.”
*He seems to be a small thing standing just over 2 feet tall. He has a small backpack that some would call a pouch size and a staff, the size of a branch, with a long pocketwatch chain attached to the bottom leading to a small crystal that he has wrapped around his wrist and allows the crystal to hang.*
*his skin is light as most of the gnomes you have seen throughout your simple travels through town. His clothes are clean and nice but not elegant by any means. He seems to be comfortable but you can tell by the dirt under his nails that he isn’t afraid to get his tiny pants dirty.*
with a jolly looking expression on his face he asks “and who might you gentlemen be?”
Tess rushes over seeing the arrival of Prax, "Good Mornin'! I do appreciate you stopping in at the Brawling Bard but would you care to sit in the chair instead of standing?"
Tess puts her hand to her chest, "I can just see you toppling over and my heart can't take cleaning blood up this early in the morn'. Now what can I get ya?"
A hooded figure walks in and scans the area, he glances at the map that is sitting on the table. He says nothing and finds a dark corner and sits down away from the introductions and continues to scan the room, listening to his surroundings.
Tess smiles at Prax and Creolina, "Oh no worries! Just don't want you to crack your noggin'. Two pints comin' up!" Tess saunters off making sure to exaggerate her hip movements as she goes.
**OOC**
@Nelvik: Please make a Perception Roll to determine how successful you are at scanning and listening. If you look at your Character sheet you will see that you have +5 in Perception.
Therefore, using the Rolling Dice roll a D20 and put 5 as your modifier.
The door bursts open, and a voice sounds through it. "This place should do for now sir."
A remarkably similar voice answers, "You have performed well today, go and find somewhere to retire yourself. We will continue on soon enough." The first voice replies with as swift affirmation before a tall High elf of noble bearing enters the room. "What a fine establishment we have here, I would love to taste some of the fine cuisine I'm sure you are capable of making." He winks at Tess, "and it looks like we have a few other guests today. Anyone care for a game of dice to pass the time?" He invites the other patrons before sitting down to wait to be served.
Prax leans into the large pint of ale with a large smile on his face. “You know we are aren’t much different from dwarves... we loooove ale.... some one say it’s almost an addiction... but what do they know” he takes a large gulp and says “I’m willing to play some dice sir. What’s your game? High roller? That one is pretty easy one”
As Tess brings the two pints of ale over to Prax and Creolina and waits expectingly, "That'll be 4 copper pieces each darlings. I hope you enjoy!"
Tess sees the High Elf Noble Rhaucred enter, "Oh for you we can whip something up! Today we have two specials, roasted quail or hog haunch. What would you like?
Nelvik Perception Check:
As you scan around the tavern everyone seems jovial and in a good mood. You don't notice anyone who seems to be threatening at the moment. As far as hearing goes you have three tables near to you.
The first is a group of what you think to be a group elves who seem to be aspiring bards based on their instruments around them and parchments scattered all over the table. They are working with each other to write some new ballads for their upcoming shows.
The second is two human who appear to be very well off based on their dress. You assume they must be merchants traveling through as they are discussing possibly altering their trade routes because of goblin activity in the area.
The third is the Dwarf you recognize as Gundren Rockseeker who you know as on of the three brothers of the Three Picks Treasure Hunting Company. He is so interested in the map you saw when you walked in that he still has not touched his mug and has not noticed you or anyone else for that matter. The only noises he makes are small grunts to himself.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nelvik seeing Gundren so interested in the map walks over to him. Nelvik grabs his mug that has been untouched and takes a swig to get his attention to ask him about what is on the map. **persuasion check 3 **
(going to assume I already know Prax as the intro said)
"Oh, the roasted quail sounds delightful my dear, I wouldn't mind a cup of ale as well from such a fine hostess I think."
I turn to Prax, and speak in a lower voice, "I'm surprised you still want to play any games with me with your record, but good to see you again. I suppose I can go easy on you today." I wink again. I pull out cup and dice, "How have you been, any new jobs lately?"
*Prax pays Tess with a smile and turns to Rhaucred* “not that I have heard just small mutterings around town. We probably need to chat with the barkeep and see if there are any rumors around”
Tess blushes at Rhaucreds words, "Coming right up!" She then walks off to fetch to drink and food.
Gundren is shaken from the brazen taking of his mug and he looks up to see Nelvik, a spy Gundren is well aware of in Neverwinter. Gundren hurriedly rolls up his map and stands short stature slightly under Nelvik's. "I thought I smelled a thief! What did the Copperpots send ye' to spy on what ol' Gundren's got goin' on? Well no luck here buddy. Or let me guess, you probably come to double cross'em an sell me their doin's. Well let me tell you we here at the Three Picks don' operate that way and don't need yer help!"
Gundren now having his attention span broken takes a moment to look around the Tavern and spots a table with Creolina, Prax, and Rhaucred and walks over. "My friends! What perfect timing!"
Gundren pulls up a chair and starts talking very low, however with Nelvik's high perception roll I will say he is able to hear as well. "Me and me brothers have found something big! I think this is what we've been lookin' fer all these years. But we need to get our supplies safely over to a tradin' post in Phandalin called Barthen's Provisions. I'll pay ye' of course for safe delivery. I got a wagon waitin' outside. What do ya' say?"
*as Prax listens he slowly grabs hold of his crystal hanging from his staff and with a flick of his wrist, below the table, casts minor illusion at Nelvik. Creating the illusion of a largish spider, venom pumping from its fangs, crawling out of the mug that he took from Gundren* “Nelvik put that down! Look! That’s why you don’t take things that aren’t yours!!” He says in utter horror
