Intrigue... Tenuous alliances... The seedy underbelly of Neverwinter... Anthropomorphism...? Trouble is brewing in places you'd never expect and a team of industrious adventurers is needed to save the day! Cats and rats and worgs, oh my!
I'm a somewhat experienced DM wanting to get a bit more practice under my belt. I'll be running King of the Cats,a whimsical, urban romp of a one-shot. There is very little combat written into the module and it mostly centers around social investigation of a mystery but who am I to hold you to the rails?!
Due to the relatively short length and light-hearted nature of the adventure, I'm looking for four players who will help fill this fairly bare-bones story with rich characters and role play to make the game a memorable experience. Honestly, most of the module, as written, could be played without dice...but where's the fun in that?? However, this is not intended to be a hack-n-slash adventure and there are no actual dungeons so min/maxing or spending too much time agonizing over stats and synergistic features isn't recommended because it most likely won't give you a perceptible edge. But you do you.
Characters will be a group of friends and/or coworkers who are well-acquainted (we'll work out the details before kicking things off).
1st level (you'll hit 2nd at the end so...congrats!)
Standard array (because min/maxing is pointless here and I'd like everyone to be relatively on-par)
No maps (everything will be narrative)
No restrictions on character options
Gameplay will occur here but Discord will be used for out of character discussion.
Recruitment will run through Friday (2/19). I'll select four players over the weekend and write the first post shortly thereafter.
I'm going with a less-than-traditional application method here so please reply to this thread with a few sentences/paragraph describing your character's personality, how they present themselves, and how they interact with others. Think along the lines of an introduction similar to what you'd use for your first post in a game thread. State their class and feel free to mention something of their backstory if it relates to their personality but, seeing as the entirety of the adventure takes place in one night, I don't feel it necessary to put a heavy emphasis on their past unless you're really into it. Race won't matter in the selection process and class may or may not play a minor role as I don't think it would be particularly detrimental to have an entire party of a single class as long as the characters are dissimilar enough.
I check this forum more than is healthy, am very communicative, and typically respond quickly so hit me with any questions.
Bonus points if I look at your posting history and see: 1) Good writing both in content (vivid descriptions & memorable dialog) and readability. 2) Posting at least once a day (not a deal breaker but it always feels good to have an engaged group). 3) Engaging with other players/characters beyond "Do you think we should go left or right?"
Hayle Monsoo - Water Gensai Warlock (The Fathomless)
Hayle stepped off onto the docks as the rest of the crew secured the bottom. The trip down the coast had been challenging - the baron had his fleet on patrol - but the storms off the coast had provided some much-needed cover. It had only been three days since they had last been ashore, but Hayle had worked the night watch, guiding the boat as close to the coast as she could. Whenever she sailed Hayle felt like she could sense the water and those around her had grown to trust her instincts when it came to the waves. It was a year ago that Hayle had been washed overboard in the middle of a storm. The visions that she had encountered that day, they experience of a being reaching out to drag her under, tentacles encircling her, suffocating, crushing, embracing, protecting. In the moment when she expected death, the being had lifted her and carried her ashore. Since then Hayle had walked with new confidence. Death had grabbed her and spat her back. Fear was a thing of the past for Hayle and the crew respected, or feared, her for it. Which she didn't know. Either way, she got what she wanted.
Syl is whatever the equivalent of a stand-up comic would be in this world. He was a rebellious youth, always falling in with the wrong crowd without ever getting into too much trouble. Trying to make it as an entertainer in the city, Syl has become quite adept at manipulating people to varying degrees. It's tough to tell when he's being genuine or trying to work an angle. He's generally a friendly guy, and his humor - sometimes dark, sometimes light-hearted - is always on display.
Ah well...seems everybody wants combat and extra dice rolls. I can get down with that. Just not what this module calls for. *shrug* I'll look for another that might be more along the lines of what peeps here are wanting.
...I guess it wouldn't really be that much different with three players. I'm just going by what the module says since I'm relatively inexperienced with adjusting difficulty, etc.

What the hey... Let's just bump the timeline back a week from the original since we're seeing a bit of interest now! I'll make the cutoff this coming Friday and then start the game thread over the weekend.
Delanra, former chief advisor to Lord Edwin De'Baral, recently departed from his service due to a recent change of interests by both parties. No stranger to court intrigues and dastardly murder (usually by her own design), she has changed her focus from politics to arcana.
Her business is her own, and her own business is definitely more important than yours... She is self-centred but happy to help anyone that she thinks can be useful to her.
Full 'stock backstory' below for reference.
Delanra always felt that she was simply better than her clutch peers and though they surely all felt the same in regards to her, Delanra had embodied that belief to the very core of her being. Her haughty, 'matter of fact' manner would have been entirely insufferable if it wasn't perceived to be justified. She had learned earlier than most that people can be convinced of a thing if they are simply told it often enough, or with the right amount of conviction. Thus it was that Delanra rose through the ranks of her pure-blood peers and was soon sent out into the human world as one of the many agents that have secretly infiltrated so many aspects of the human society.
Over the years of involving herself in court politics and intrigue, Delanra grew a strange affection for the humans. Not an affection like humans shared with each other though, more like how the master of hounds feels affection for his pups, as they grow under his training and command. They were so malleable, so weak of mind as a species, that Delanra got unforgivably sloppy. A particularly ambitious, well-funded, wretch of a meat-sack had been vying with her for some time over a small matter of no real consequence, something about how another noble she was trying to elevate to a higher station in court would have stripped the man's father of his lands and wealth, leaving the wretch with nothing. Unfortunately the man, Renaldic, had somehow managed to bribe a large number of individuals that Delanra had herself spent an awfully large amount of money to procure their opinions and allegiances. This meant that when she had expected Renaldic out of the way for some time, he turned up at an entirely ill-opportune moment and forced her to abandon a scheme of nearly a year in the making.
Delanra's inner-rage was so profound that she literally set the man on fire. There and then. In front of most of the court... Now, whilst this was entirely justified in her vaunted opinion it did cause her some notable level of concern. Renaldic was after all just a human and his suffering was nothing that Delanra would normally offer more than a passing thought to. Her concern however, for that it was her doing was never a doubt in her mind, was how she had set him on fire. She had no idea! Fortunately, however she had accomplished it, those gathered around seemed not to immediately recognize that she had been the cause of it.
That was the first time Delanra had ever used more than the innate magical talents that every Yuan-ti possess. Images of how much easier her work would be if she were able to control this talent filled her mind, thinking of the tales of wizards, and the times that she had met such folk when they had come through the city on some errand... This was no fluke. This was but the first touch of a new power, and she was determined that it wouldn't be the last.
He's noble, he's haughty, he's a bit pompus and scary, and when someone or something is not the focus of his attention - something you don't want to be - his gaze is always a bit clouded and distant, as if he's seeing into waking dreams.
Rolling for the Kalashatar Quirk: 5
Halis is obsessed with Dreaming Dark conspiracies. This manifests as paranoia and minor hallucinations because Halis don't know what the Dreaming Dark is, not having been born in Eberron but rather Faerûn. Halis worships Savras, the god of Divination and Fate.
Background / Personality:
Halis the Bright-Eyed is a Kalashtar Paladin of cultured breeding. While he has never actually outright stated whether or not he is nobility, he sure acts like it around others. Of course, this might be due to his Kalshatar nature – he is, after all, part spirit, or quori, and is never truly present in this world by his very nature.
Reserved and reticent, when Halis can touch base with his present reality long enough to become emotionally involved, his silver eyes light up expressively in a way that most other creatures find to be disconcerting or downright frightening. His propensity to speak directly into the minds of others rather than be bothered to move his lips also contributes to his poor socialization skills. Despite this, Halis’ unearthly beauty moves many to be in awe of him despite his oddities and quirks. As they say, life is significantly easier for beautiful people.
This is perhaps a very good thing in Halis’s case, for he is also plagued by his own personal demons – constant visions of the Dreaming Dark, an evil force that preys upon and murders the Kalashtar. This is a well-known phenomenon in Eberron, but Halis was born in Faerûn, and has never learned of the existence or lore of the Dreaming Dark. Despite this, he can feel its power hunting him, and suffers from mild paranoia and hallucinations – seeing shadows moving where there are none, and malignant whispers when left alone or in dark places for too long.
Halis doesn’t spend enough time focusing on his immediate surroundings or interpersonal relations to have any real social skills to speak of. Somehow, though, through a combination of his good looks and thoughtful replies, he does well in society. He could be described as the walking definition of “awkwardly popular.” He is devoted to serving his god, Savras, as an answer to his paranoid visions of the evil that hunts him, and has embraced paladin-hood as the most direct (and literally to-the-point) method of confronting this nebulous fear.
