This will be my first experience running D&D in the Play By Post format. This is largely a test to see how the experience goes. Accordingly, I will be running a short, simple, pre-made 5e D&D module, Glitterdoom. The module says it is designed to be completed, potentially, in one IRL gaming session. I am curious how this will translate to PBP.
I have one player lined up, at present. The module is for 4-6 3rd level PCs, so I will be recruiting for 3-5 additional players.
The module is fairly setting agnostic, but due to personal familiarity I am setting it an Eberron, where it will take place in the Mror Holds, the predominantly Dwarven region of Khorvaire. Extensive setting knowledge is not required for this module, but for deities, select from the Eberron list in the PHB for divine characters (or just characters who want to have a chosen faith for flavor purposes). The module involves an abandoned Dwarven mine that has fallen under a curse. Your characters will have been contacted in advance by a client, and have agreed to aid with the matter, so assume your character is already "onboard" for this quest, with a general understanding that you and any others involved will be dividing up any spoils found within the mine, should the mission end in success. You will be meeting the other adventurers who have been contracted by the client (the other PCs) for the first time at a trading post supposedly near to the mine's location, within the Mror Holds. Note your character does not need to be Dwarven, but they can be. The client has reason for seeking outside contractors for this quest.
Starting Gear and Gold: Normal Starting Gear for Class and Background only, no "roll for gold" class alternative, + 320 GP + One Uncommon Magic Item of your choice from the DMG. Unwanted items from your class or background starting gear can be sold for 1/2 base price. Gold can be used to purchase any item in the PHB, including basic Potions of Healing for 50 GP.
Abilities: 27 PHB Point Buy, Only, no rolled stats
HP: HP will be maximized at first level, and "fixed" for levels 2 and 3, per PHB rules.
Races, Classes, Class Archetypes, Feats, Multi-Classing, and Backgrounds: Any PHB Races, Classes, Backgrounds, Class Archetypes and Feats, no other sources. Feats must meet their required prerequisites. Multi-classing is permitted if the character meets the stat minimums required for both the class they are leaving and the class they are going into, per PHB standard rules.
I am hoping to get some personal experience with the PBP format of DMing a game, and also to potentially find suitable players for a longer original (not a pre-written module) campaign, possibly in a different setting, but likely starting at a similar level, so I may provide the option for those characters to be "ported over" with the same stats and items they end this module with, likely with some backstory ret-con to fit the new setting (if they so wish). That's for "later," for now, on to application information.
For the format of the application, I would like it to be fairly simple and mechanics focused, with one "twist" at the end. The basics will be as follows, and can be posted in this thread, you do not need to create a link to a character sheet at this stage, unless selected for the game (although you can also do so and post a link if that is your preference):
Name:
Background:
Race (including racial subtype, ie, Mountain Dwarf, not Dwarf, Variant Human, not Human, etc.):
Feat (if variant human):
Class, or Classes and Class levels if multi-classed:
Class Archetype, or archetypes, if multi-classed,
Abilities: Str/Dex/Con/Int/Wis/Cha scores generated by point buy, after racial modifiers (and possibly after applying the feat for a Variant Human)
Trained Skills (All, inclusive of Background, Class(es) and any Bonus Racial Skills or Skills obtained from a Variant Human Feat like Skilled):

Dialogue Response (explained below):
All mechanics, purely, above, save the last part. For the "twist," I do not want a description of backstory for the application. You can if you wish. I am looking for quality role players who will engage in role play and dialogue. Admittedly a module is not oriented in that direction, but it can make the experience more rewarding and engrossing, for player and GM, and also I do have intentions to split off from the module format (if I find DMing in PBP something I can figure out reasonably well) into a full campaign. Accordingly I am just asking for a snippet of character dialogue from "your character" really just to show off your ability to write IC dialogue. I am not looking for players who simply "wait their turn," and play mechanics-only (although I will be using 5e standard rules by the book, note), but players who will engage in dialogue with other PCs and NPCs, for this module, and the hypothetical campaign(s) to follow.
The dialogue prompt is as follows. A priest of the Silver Flame, an Eberron deity, approaches your character, unfamiliar with them and not knowing their faith. They speak in a well informed, scholarly manner, preaching to you of things your character may or may not know about the afterlife in Eberron.
"You've likely heard of Dolurrh, the plane of death, even if you are a layperson to matters of faith and religion. That is the fate that likely awaits you, and the majority of others, when they pass from this life. A hopeless grey waste where colors fade, ennui sets in, and your soul erodes, tearing away all memory and sense of personal identity until all that is left is a wandering shade. The majority here worship the Sovereign Host, while a few of malevolent character worship the Dark Six. These pantheons offer earthly guidance and reward, but for the afterlife, it is only a second, more gradual, death of the self. Those souls beholden to the Silver Flame, however, will have life after death, not a second death, as we are joined with our god. True, some also speak of another afterlife outside of Dolurrh, these followers of the Path of Light, but this is a foreign cult, one without repute, and their Inspired are not to be trusted. The Silver Flame offers you true life beyond this one. Is that not worth changing your ways, setting aside old things, and embracing the cleansing fire of the Silver Flame?"
Whether your character is eloquent or taciturn in speech, consider this a scenario where the priest is willing to engage in dialogue and debate over matters of faith. They have presented this argument, which if your character is trained in matters of Religion, they know to be true, for the most part. Even if your character is usually not overly verbose, say the mood struck them to provide a more nuanced and detailed response to this verbal appeal. Perhaps they are moved by it, or already a follower of the Silver Flame doctrine themselves. Assume the priest is a young missionary, not a cleric or paladin, someone who has no experience with combat who was born since end of the war that tore the continent apart.
I will leave recruitment open for a few days, assuming there have been an adequate number and quality of submissions at that time, and then I will PM the people who have been selected and provide them a link to the campaign thread and a link to create/link their character sheets with the campaign, then I will close out the recruitment thread.
No, not per the optional encumbrance rules. I will use the default rules where Heavy Armor requires a minimum strength score in order to avoid a movement speed penalty, light and medium armor will not have a strength requirement. As for gear weight overall, if you are carrying an excessive amount of heavy items on a low strength character, I recommend buying a cheap mule or donkey for “storage,” but I will be using “reasonableness” more than specific weights compared to strength score, if that makes sense, with the exception of the armor rules from the PHB, as noted above.
Yes on milestone leveling, I find tracking individual encounter experience to be too cumbersome in general.

Thank you, very on point with the format for submission overall.
For clarity for others, on "skills" I meant trained skills like Athletics, Acrobatics, Stealth, Investigation, etc., either trained from your Background, provided by your Race, or selected as Class proficiency choices. Your character's Criminal Background trains Deception and Stealth, for example, the Elf race gives trained Perception, and you can select 4 additional skills as a Rogue, beyond those 3 provided by your Background and Race, in this case.

Galtheon stares at the priest as he says his piece, then considers the words for an extended period afterward, his eyes seemingly focussed on the distant mountain peaks, his body unmoving. After a time his attention returns to the priest in front of him, who now feels the weight of that gaze. The priest is reminded of a wolf about to strike.
"No", he says.
Watching the priest's uncertain response, Galtheon realizes that he wants more. He shrugs. "I have what I need, and when I die I will nourish the trees and the plants...and perhaps whatever it is that killed me. That is the natural way of things."
"And you, priest...do you seek to escape your duty to the world that nourished you and gave you form?"
Your Uncommon Magic Item Selection: Cloak of Protection

A sailor on the high seas, Evan stares off into the sunset for a long moment before answering this priest.
"You may well be right, holy man. And there are times, such as these, when the sea quiets and the sunlight fades beneath the water that makes a man muse on such things," replies Evan thoughtfully. Standing quietly as the sky slowly darkens, he continues, "When the twilight of my life comes, I'll be thinking of the adventures I've had, the people I've loved, and the legacy I leave behind." Leaning on the railing and looking back towards the priest as the final hues of sunset darken to a deep blue, Evan finally answers the priest's question with one of his own, asking, "And when I die, what does it matter if my soul goes to a plane of death to fade away, or to be joined with a god's fire? In either case my identity is lost, whether the remnant of my soul becomes a wandering shade or a spark wholly subsumed to fuel some diety's fire."

Bori'Mak sneers at the speaker "Silver Flame" he growls in a voice rough as stone. "Hmph. Silver tongue. You speak of life." Bori'Mak pauses and glares at each in turn "I see slaves." Bori'Mak snarls and turns away "I will not be chained."
Dialogue Response: "That might be worth considering, my pious friend, but truly, the only immortality in which I am interested is that which lives on in poetry and prose. If my exploits are remembered after I am gone, I shall be content. This Path of Light you mentioned, however, sounds interesting. Tell me more about that."
Thank you all for the excellent entries and thoughtful submissions. To keep the group size reasonable and avoid too many others entering and taking the time to write out characters and dialogue submissions I will close this out at this time and send messages out shortly. A variety of criteria is being considered, including party composition, character builds, as well as the submitted dialogue. Whether or not your character was selected, do not take it as an offense or a slight - I will likely run games again if this goes well, so I look forward to playing with each and everyone one of you, perhaps as a fellow player, a player in your campaign, or a player in one of mine. Thanks again!

I look forward to joining the light of the Silver Flame, may it burn with care and warmth."

Dialogue Response (explained below):
