You sit in your bunk quarters fresh after a training drill. Being indoors is refreshing after being outside in the hot summer sun.Through the windows you can hear the birds chirping mixed in with all the slow hustle around the fort. The ever present low hum of the purple and blue swirling portal standing 25 feet in diameter standing upright in the center.
Along the West side of the complex, you all sit in a long building sectioned off by teams as you own living area. You’ve yet to get your own name since you’ve just joined. While you talk amongst yourselves going over how Sergeant Quinton ripped into the team for being too slow on your last drill.
The living quarters contains Three bunk beds, a chest for each soldier, a bathroom (Thank the gods for prestidigitation enchanted latrines), and a lounge area.
Andris crouched near his chest slowly packing and unpacking it with his meager belongings. His long dark hair fell with slight tangles as he stared at what was now in his hands. He dropped to kneeling and stared at the torn and tattered remnants of the banner now in his hands. It was black, pitch black with a stylized set of wings with another stylized vertical spear stained crimson. He nearly lost himself in memory of his father's voice as he recounted the fall, but he couldn't lose himself, not here, not in front of these people. He carefully placed the banner back in his trunk and then his bag with his belongings. Finally content, he sat up the bed and scanned the room around him.
Flux, the air genasi, light blue skin and eyes, with medium length white hair stands next to his bunk changing into his loose fitting white wool pants and a dark red shoulder sash. Those that have ever stood within a couple feet from him noticed that an ever constant light breeze encircles him, tousling his hair and shifting his clothes about just ever so slightly, and he purposely wears loose clothing to emphasize this effect. "Can you believe that Sergeant Quinton had the audacity to say I'm too slow, ME too slow?? I'm a lot of things but slow ain't one of them!"
"I can see why he'd say that. We are a team, and either succeed or fail as a team." Andris says to Flux. He then softens for a moment and continues, "But yes, you seem to be the quickest of us. Just don't run out of stamina." Standing up, he stretches his sore muscles a bit and glances out the window at the portal. He didn't like it, not at all.
"Yeah, you're right. This whole TEAM thing is a new concept to me. I'm typically a solo act kind of person." Flux walks over to stand by Andris "Though I guess that's why I'm here, decided it was time for a new experience." and he lets his mind wander to think about his adopted father Gadrith for a moment then snaps out of it "and don't you worry, I got plenty of endurance to go around."
Marley steps down off the top bunk which creaks as it tries to straighten back up. The pale blue skinned half orc swept her blonde hair into it's trademark high bun. Her leather armour slaphazardly tied to her body, not quite big enough to fit but Marley had insisted to the equipment officer that it was her size. Making her way over to Flux and Andros, she stretched her arms up before quickly grazing her hand on the roof.
"At least you didn't trip over a small twig during the last lap" She reaches down and brushes some dirt from the cut on her knee, at least when Marley scars it will blend in with the rest of her tribal scars covering her body.
"Hey pal, I was right there with you." Drakus smirked. "But you're right. We're a team. Not all of us are going to be fast, but we all do have strengths. We have to exploit that." Drakus takes his cloak off revealing his bat-like wings that barely stand out against his dark blue skin that might as well be black. He folds the cloak and puts it in his chest.

Ewan was unpacking his single small bag. He didn't come with much. He felt partly responsible for the complaints the sergeant had, as he rests you see that his left foot is withered and that he walks aided by a large staff which glows green at the top. "I'm not even officially meant to be going through the drills, I'm here as the local consultant," he said, under his voice.
"The last time something like this happened, the civilized soldiers almost all got killed because the stepped onto 'sacred' ground - we decided that they would need a guide - why did it have to be me? I'm not built for war" Ewan rubbed above the leg where his foot was black. "And he wouldn't let me use my magic. When a portal opens, it's magic. You fight magic, with magic. He may think swinging a sword is all there is to defending somewhere, but the sergeant probably hasn't even had to deal with otherworldly beings. He was told he should take my warnings seriously, but he thinks that the sword will work. Wait until something comes through from the elemental planes, see him think swords are OK then..." Ewan said, still under his breath but loud enough for the room to hear. He was obviously not happy with the sergeant.
Sitting on the bed was a half-elf man with long, black hair. About just a little bit over six foot tall (roughly six and a half-inch), Ewan wears no footwear on his left foot, which can be seen as withered and black, as if decayed by some form of strong magic, and he supports himself on his staff. His staff itself is about six foot tall itself, with a glowing green gem on the top, and small leaves growing from the tip. He looks about 30, though he is not quite there yet - just weathered from the life he has had outside of civilization.
"I could help with the cut if you need." Calelle calls out to Marley as he puts away some of his gear keeping his shield and spear near his cot he sits down on the edge of his cot "That is if you want me to" Calelle is a young human male slightly shorter than 6 foot with dark brown hair and goldish eyes.
Just as you are getting comfortable in your respective seats and spots. The sweat on your body finally begins to evaporate in the stale warm air. You all hear it. It’s a sound none of you have heard before but you know exactly what it means.
BONG. BONG. BONG. BONG.
The continuous ringing of the alarm bell. Everyone looks out the window facing the courtyard to see Sergeant Quinton, the Goliath with slate colored skin. His red leather armor strapped across his chest. He’s repeatedly beating the bell with his war hammer. The low hum of the portal is getting louder and louder as the pitch gets higher and higher. The air begins to smell like burnt oxygen before lightening starts whipping around. A bolt slams into the bell and the sergeant as they go flying 30 feet in the other direction to a thunderous Boom!
Two very large fur covered claws begin to breach the portals edge. Yellow taloned and chipped claws coming out of jet black fur. They continue to walk out of the portal.
(There are two windows facing the courtyard, otherwise the door to the hallway and walk through the hall and around the building to get there)
Drakus pulls his cloak back on. "Let's go everyone, this one doesn't look like a drill." Drakus attempts to open the window and climb out. (if it doesn't open i'll smash it with the pummel of my dagger) He will also call for his owl familiar, Mouser to join him. He runs toward Quinton for orders.

Flux grabs only his trusted boomerang tucking it into a handmade slot on the waistband of his white pants and heads for the window Drakus is working on. Looking out the window seeing the Sergeant go flying and a beast coming through the portal "Yeah I'm gonna have to agree, definitely not a drill. Looks like we get to see some real action today." and hes out the window right behind Drakus after he opens or breaks it.
"Why did it have to be a window..." Ewan sighs to himself. Before he climbs out of the window, the black hair spreads down the rest of his body, growing out almost like a werewolf, however as the transformation completes, jumping behind out of the window is a large black dire wolf, though the fur on one of his left feet is still matted and tangled. Getting into line alongside Drakus and Flux and howls, letting the rest of the fort know a battle is about to ensue, joining the ringing of the bell.
[OOC: Ewan uses his bonus action to transform into the Dire Wolf, and he takes the dodge action to prepare for combat].
Stepping out into the open courtyard. The portal resting to the North end, some 40 feet away from the window to the right. 30 feet to your left at the south end, Sergeant Quinton is unconscious against the wall next to the large bell charred black from the lightening.
The beast continues to emerge. A tall, extremely lanky beast with thick dark black fur. As it breathes the entire body inflates and deflated like a balloon; alternating size from 10 feet wide to 20 feet. its head, which is very wide, very flat, and monkey like in shape. Its eye are located just in front of the temples and they are pickle flesh green with no irises, just button sized blackness. Its head wobbles around on a pencil thin neck and there is an extra joint in the creatures legs and arms. Six inch long claws extend from it’s fingers and toes. These claws are chipped, scratched, and covered in dirt. Two diamond shaped nostrils that flare to almost 3 inches wide are set in its forehead. The creatures most notable features are its mouth and teeth. The mouth is protuberant and bony to the point of being sharp. Many layers of teeth extend back to the gullet, but there are only bottom teeth. Many of these teeth are broken and all the teeth are black and yellow with abuse. The teeth are arranged in an arch like fashion, with the longest bottom tooth in the middle, the shortest at the edges, and the teeth descending in height from the middle. A row of holes above lie above the teeth in the same arch like fashion and when the mouth is closed the tips of the front row of teeth stick out through the holes. wobbling with uncertainty and several horrifying popping and grinding noises can be heard as it unhinges its jaws like a snake. It looses a scream so unnatural that your ears are having trouble processing it. The jaw comes completely loose and lashes forth like a spring with a weight on one end as it charges with a disturbing, rolling gait.
May people got a post up between the gong and the monster description but alas I was at work. If able, Andris would swear under his breath, summon a longsword as his pact weapon, then follow the others out the window. If I need to wait, that's cool too.
"Well isnt that an interesting looking beasty" Flux zooms forward but stop just shy of the creature. He studies the creature "Let's see what exactly you do"dropping into a low balanced stance, hands palm open in front of him flowing snake like though in a defensive nature.(Dodge Action)
Marley grabs her Warhammer that was supporting he bunk bed and throws it out the window, quickly squeezing through behind. She picks up her weapon and runs toward the creature standing 10 ft away
