Good evening and welcome to Saltmarsh! A small nondescript fishing village on the Sword Coast midway between Waterdeep and Neverwinter, the town of Saltmarsh and its hardy inhabitants endure both winter storms and the Mere of Dead Men to the south. The town is made up of simple working folks who often are disregarded as simple due by those in the larger cities, but these people have learned to take care of themselves and many have become shrewd businessmen and women in the process. The town also harbors some nasty secrets in a thriving criminal syndicate that operates within its area. Can the honest people of the town win out against these dastardly crews before other, more destructive forces sweep the town into the sea forever?
During this adventure, we will use the dice roller application in the forums to make any rolls we need to.
When battle begins, I will roll initiative for everyone in one post and begin taking our turns for there. The best way I have found to expedite things is for everyone to post their turns and I will sort out how the hits land in initiative order. I will post start the next round and we will go again.
I will do my best to post at least once every 24 hours but will probably be able to do more than that. If you cannot make a post after 24 hours in combat you will be considered to take the dodge action. If you know of something that could prevent you from posting for a bit, let me know and we can work around it.
Seems like a am forgetting something but just ask if you think of anything.
While traveling along the Sword Coast, your group of varied adventurers has formed by sheer luck and the desire for further adventure. A stop along the road your group has discovered is the small fishing village of Saltmarsh. Saltmarsh is primarily a human town, but the sight of other races occurs in town from time to time depending on the crews that visit its shores. Your group enters Saltmarsh through the main city gate (#1) with the guards giving your diverse group a stern look and no other comment. After asking around, you learn that many of the town's business affairs are often formed over a pint of ale at the Snapping Line tavern (#13). Entering the tavern, you hear the female human behind the bar yell "Welcome to the Snapping Line! Best drinks in town! What'll it be boys?"
OOC: One other thing, when speaking out of character, use the OOC tag. Also at the top of each post, please put your character name to help me not get confused. Thanks
Reg calls to the bartender, "Give me a cold ale, warm bread, and a fillet of the catch of the day," as he makes his way to the bar. Old habits die hard, and he mentally ranks the potential threat of each patron as he moves ahead (Insight: 9).
At first glance, Reg is the very image of a city guard, wearing heavy armor, carrying sword, shield, and javelin, and sporting the ubiquitous heavy cloak emblazoned with the sigil of his city...Although he is not in his city, Neverwinter...and the cloak shows the sign of recent travel...and the condition of the armor, upon closer inspection, is better suited to a travelling mercenary than a member of the militia. Still, the square-jawed and black-haired Reg carries himself with confidence and appears to be greatly looking forward to a cold ale and a hot meal.
Turning to Rellynn, he asks, "So, is this your first time in Saltmarsh too?"
As Reginald says this you hear this very tall muscular man with are entirely yellow eyes (pupils included) speak in a low voice and almost as though he is speaking with gravel in his mouth he slowly says to the bartender "No Fish." as he takes a look around the room as well and loudly pulls himself up a seat.
You notice upon further inspection that Shaul has long flowing black hair that goes about a bit down his back and a bit past his shoulders. He is also wearing red pants with a white belt, white wraps around his wrists and hands and no shoes but what comes as the most surprising of all is that upon first glance is that his skin....is made of stone and what appears to be... some sort of glowing orange lines on his skin that are very reminiscent of lava down his arms and across his back. It is very clear that he is not of this city and it is difficult to gauge what his intentions may be but he does not appear as though he is looking to harm anyone.
That being said he does carry with him a boomerang on his side, a quarterstaff in his hand and from what you can tell appear to be darts on his person.
Elias sets at the table and says: " I too will take an ale and a fillet with bread"
Elias is an Elf with shoulder length black hair, green eyes, and tanned skin from the many hours spent outdoors. He wears leather armor with a long bow across his back, and two Elvin short swords on his sides.
A stately young woman stands at the mouth of the tavern, surveying her surroundings. If anyone looks closely enough, they might catch a glimpse of slight disgust and discomfort in her eyes. The woman’s riding dress is wealthy, although specked with mud and condensation. The long sleeves come down to her wrists, covering most of her skin. However, her clothing can’t hide the creeping golden scales that are beginning to cover her neck and lower jaw.
She is shaken out of her silent gaze by Reginald’s shout. ”Yes, my good guardsman, it is my first time in this little town, although it isn’t my first time in the area.” She begins moving towards the bar with a graceful stride. ”A wine, if you would please, bartender.”
“Just bread a little hot stew for me, thank you.” Keric says. He has a low voice, but the words flow fluidly from his mouth with a soothing lilt. He reaches to the wineskin on his hip and takes a quick nip, followed by a satisfied sounding exhale. Keric’s age is written in lines of grey coursing through his thick hair and beard. A life spent working ships has left him with an athletic build and sun-battered skin.
His tunic of storm grey leaves most of his arms bare, exposing a five-pointed star tattoo on his forearm. The dark blue trim on his garb matches his eyes which shine like pearlescent waves under a starry sky. His shield and warhammer hang idle on the back of his chair. He leans back in his chair and says, “It is good to be back in a sea town again.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Reginald of Neverwinter
Waiting for his food and drink, Reg pulls up a chair next to the very relaxed-looking Keric at the bar, asking the bartender, “What’s the latest news in town, barkeep?”

Captain Blackhand: Trying his best not to appear too eager for a drink, Beric casually enters the quaint country tavern behind the others. As he steps through the doorway, he awkwardly straightens his usual brown sailor's hat and tattered navy blue officer's jacket, both adorned in various buttons, baubles and trinkets. With his signature Cutlass hanging loosely at his side and scarred left eye, Captain Blackhand is sure he'll be recognized this time!
Smiling cheerfully at the attractive barmaid, Beric looks her up and down suggestively while saying crudely, "Ahoy, surly wench! Prepare to be boarded!" Reaching for the startled woman, Blackhand stops upon noticing the disapproving glares of his new traveling companions, saying, "Beggin' yer pardon, lass. I'm a newly reformed Pirate ya must understand..." He trails off a moment before mumbling, "Arrrgh... I'd swab yer poop deck fer free, I would! Uhh...I mean... Rum please, ma'am."
Doing his best to behave himself, Captain Blackhand realizes just how difficult his transition to an "Adventurer" is really going to be.
Keric raises an eyebrow at Blackhand's remarks and says, "The Queen of the Depths will have our next ship for sure, Blackhand. A little civility, please, when conversing with the fairer sex."
He whispering a low, hissing word casting Guidance on the Captain to help with any persuasion/apology checks he might need to make
OOC: Greatest thing about the Pirate Background is that people just expect this kind of behavior from him and ignore it. Somebody let me know if I go too far though. lol

OOC - Yep, totally! With Keric being a Cleric, I think he would be trying to steer you on the higher path in your post-pirate life.
I myself am totally good with it as DM. This adventure has a heavy pirate theme afterall. If anyone gets uncomfortable with something I or one of the other players says, please let me know and we will remedy it.
The barmaid brings the drinks and food to the table "Here you go, havn't seen your lot around here before, name's Hanna and this is my place. Hope everything is too your liking. Let me know if there is anything else I can get for ya." Turning to Reginald she says "Oh you know, just the usual issues that most places have. We are generally a quiet bunch that can take care of themselves. We sometimes have trouble when some unsavory crews come into port making deliveries and such." As she says this, she turns and likes a stern look to Beric "But no matter, please enjoy your stay in Saltmarsh."
Hearing the barmaid say this I say in my very low voice as I stare straight ahead, arms crossed "That makes enough sense. Whether it be a bear foraging for food or bird looking for a place to build a nest, those strong enough in nature will always find their way."
"A word of caution to you though captain... bees do not enjoy when you reach for their hives ... and nature is not always as friendly as it may seem... it can be just as easy to be stung as it can be to be reached....remember this when you try to agitate a hive"
At Beric’s rather profane greeting of the barmaid, Reg’s jaw drops, much like the fresh catch of the day. Recovering swiftly, he closes his mouth with an audible click, searching for something to say. Keric’s smooth answer keeps him from rushing to defend her honor, deftly defusing the situation.
Once he regains his composure, he speaks to Hanna, saying, “I am sure there will be no trouble with such unsavory types today, Hanna,” he intones not looking at any of his companions in particular, continuing, “but if there are, I would be happy to defend your honor. If I may, could you tell me who is in charge of keeping order in town, or perhaps the defense of the town from external threats? Just in case there are larger problems, I would also be glad to help,” he finishes.

Keric takes his order and thanks the barmaid with a smile. He throws a dash of extra salt into the stew and starts eating, using the bread as a scoop rather than the provided spoon.
As the group is enjoying their chat and meal, the door suddenly bursts open. An older man stands just outside the door, his grizzled face partially lit by the tavern light. He lets out a loud yell, mixed with a scream, and comes running into the tavern. He runs to a table, grabs a patron by the shirt collar, and is yelling at him “Ghosts! Its haunted I tell ya!”
the patron, swatting the hands away from his collar, says “Eustal, what the hell are you talking about? You’ve done went and lost your mind.”
Eustal yells “That’s right, hells demons done took up in it. All manner of ghastly things. If ye want to live, ya better get away from this forsaken town.”
As this is occurring, three city watch guards come into the tavern and grab the older fellow. The eldest of the three says “what is the meaning of this!” But Eustal continues “leave! We have to get out of here. Everyone is going to die and come back as one of those things!”
Two of the guards take Eustal away as the lone guard goes to speak to Hanna.
