Hello everyone, I have been looking to start a new game for 4 players. Thing is have been having a hard time deciding what to run. I don’t have any official material and usually run a homebrew campaign. But I figured I would leave it up to the players! We have options:
A.) I find a free campaign module (suggestions?)
B.) Space Adventures? - Think futuristic setting magic can Refluffed as technology if the player wishes, but doesn’t have to. Think Futurama “Let’s go to the Flapperbuster!” Because that’s a thing in the future and you can say it’s not.... because it’s the future. (More light hearted, relaxed, aloof campaign)
C.) Standard adventure - Choices are purposeful to buck the system. Trying to fill a role that that class usually isn’t “optimal” for. I’m talking the Barbarian face, the klepto cleric, the ravishingly handsome goblin, and the half elf who has two loving parents.
Looking to post 1-2 times a day.
Start at level 5
Applications: here in thread
1. Game preference order (if you want to make a character for each game that’s fine.)
Name:
Race:
Class:
Short backstory (2-3 sentences):
2. Rolled stats! Roll 4d6 drop lowest and always rerolled ones.
3. A word of warning out of fairness, while I won’t restrict anyone from the classes and races they choose (anything UA, Critical Role, and Official is okay) I do find DMing for characters that have shapechanging as a racial feat to be tedious. Doesn’t mean you won’t be picked, but I do have a bias.
Look forward to seeing the applications. Ask any questions here as I know I forgot something.
Background/Backstory: Entertainer -- Plaugg is the son of a chance encounter between an Elven father and Human mother. Raised by his mother, Plaugg never knew his father. His mother did her best, though with little success at crafting a living. As a result, Harold and his mom mostly lived on the grift, moving from place to place and moving from short con to short con. He learned to blend into situations very quickly. Most anyone who looks at him tends to recognizes him as someone they know -- no matter where he goes, people "remember" him and assume he belongs there. Although he is charming, builds rapport quickly, and easily influences others, Harold does not seek leadership positions preferring to guide decision makers toward his desired outcomes by verbal finesse.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ability scores: 141714151217
1. I’m down for anything, but I’m curious about space adventures
Casanova - Tiefling - Bard - Acolyte
Casanova is a devout, dedicated servant of his gods. He’s a talented musician, and warrior. He’s also celibate. So it’s quite unfortunate the way rumors have left bards with the reputation they have. Casanova is constantly being assailed with “indiscreet” men and women who are caught in the magnetism of his soul.
Casanova’s had enough. He’s heading out into the world to try to get away from a rather persistent congregation of people tempted into sin by their own priest. He’s taking up adventuring and he’ll be back after a few scars have dialed back the effects of his beauty.
Background/Backstory: Entertainer / Yerrk loves to play with fire! Usually at the cost of his own feathers. Some parts of his body are featherless because of this and when he tries to fly it usually means crashing into a tree or he lands in the occassional mudpool.
Inseparable twins that share a life force with one another. Forced out of their home town with their mother at a young age for reasons that they’re unaware of, they spent years out in the wilderness before their mother was attacked and killed by a savage beast. From that moment, they had to fend for themselves and look after each other. Forbi is a male fighter that specialises in 2 weapon fighting while his twin sister Dorbi prefers to watch his back with her bow. (I plan to play both characters as one so they move together and fight together, sharing the same stats as a multiclass character does and shared HP)
1. I'm happy to try anything. The space setting sounds like an interesting one, it would have it's own challenges and its own interesting bits. There's also a whole bunch of pay-what-you-want adventures on the Dungeon Masters Guild, if you'd like to run a free adventure. No specific suggestions though I'm afarid.
2. I'll create two characters. One of the fantasy setting and one for the sci-fi setting. Fantasy array: 141018141616 Sci-fi array: 11111415713
Fantasy Character: Vonrak Hammerstone (Battlemaster Fighter 4/ Wizard 1): Vonrak was born into the Hammerstone royal family under the Umber Mountains. 11th in line to throne, he was never expected to become a ruler and so was encouraged to train for combat instead. He showed a remarkable aptitude but his mind was also sharp and he yearned for more than brutish conflict, which he views as beneath him. He began to experiment with magic, even though it was taboo in his kingdom. His family found out and gave him an ultimatum - give up his studies or leave. He chose to leave and has travelled the land for two years, honing his skills and hoping to prove himself and the value of magic through his deeds.
Vonrak is designed to play against the trope of a rough and tough dwarf. Although he has those characteristics to a degree, he somewhat resents and looks down on them. Mechanically, he's a multi-class figher/wizard (who will develop his wizard skills as time goes on). Thus, he will be able to go into close quarters with heavy armour and take a beating, whilst dealing out spells for his main damage and only falling back on melee attacks as a last resort. His roleplaying motivations revolve around a desire to learn magic and to do good with it so he can eventually return home with his power acknowledged. Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/23477428/Kd1x8I
Sci-fi character: Venseris (Storm Sorcerer): Venseris never had a family or a home. Her memories of her childhood were of pain and suffering in clinical white rooms filled with medical and arcane equipment. Later in her life she realised she was the subject of experiments designed to infuse her with magical abilities. The experiments were a success - probably to a degree unexpected by her captors as she was able to use her powers to violently escape her prison as a teenager. She went on the run, initially hoping to evade her captors. She learned that, although most people are flawed, helping them feels good and doing so helped her develop her powers further. Now, in her early twenties, she doesn't fear those who experimented on her. But, if she ever finds out who they are, they should fear her.
Venseris is a fairly traditional storm sorceress mechanically and uses this to deal damage and normally keeps out of harm's way if possible. She has decent personal skills and isn't adverse to lying and cheating if it helps her do good. In a roleplaying sense, she channels magic from a source she doesn't understand and is determined to do good with her gifts, regardless of the unpleasant way she got them. She's driven to do good, to prove to herself she's good, and to hunt down and take revenge on her captors if she gets the opportunity. How her captors fit into the world is something I'd be happy for the DM to determine. Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/23477428/Kd1x8I
I'd love to join! Some of the campaigns I'm currently in are moving really slowly, so getting in on something that is active every day would be great as I'm on 5-7 days a week, sometimes for quite a bit.
Name: Rokas Redpetal
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Druid
Short backstory: Rokas excelled in druidic teachings as a child, and was pushed by his loving parents to pursue his dream of mastering nature's magic. His father, a well-known ranger, tragically vanished one day and nobody in the village could ever find a trace of him. Rokas' mother became increasingly anxious and paranoid that she would lose her only son as well. Over the years her panic transferred to Rokas, and he became increasingly neurotic and germophobic.
backstory: Was given to an orphanage by parents who didn’t want him as they were high elf nobles. His teifling-ness is due to his parent’s deal with a “shadow man” so they could have Noble ranking in their society. Moral ambiguity between his deity Osiris and the evil influence of the shadow man who wants him to find and get revenge on his parents
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for the links for Spelljammer - probably more work than I know I’m able to provide a good game for you all.
So, I’ll be finding a campaign and tweaking as needed but it will be a lore traditional setting. So maybe a mix of A and C. For those making and refining your characters please explain the “role” you’re looking to fill, both mechanical and RP.
Mechanically Forbi and Dorbi will be up close and personal when needed but with the option of having good range. Taking the battle master archetype as a fighter, I plan to focus on grappling, shoving and knocking prone to assist the group. Rather than playing a standard rogue, I’m planning on going down the path of scout at rogue 3.
From an RP perspective, Forbi and Dorbi won’t always agree with each other but will probably come to an agreement that works best for the group. Forbi will want to get things done quickly while Dorbi will act as more of a conscience.
From a mechanical perspective, support/debuff mainly with up close capabilities from a role playing perspective a focus on the duality between his two deities and a focus to him on finding his purpose, and mayhaps his parents for a closure

Bardic Inspiration is just someone believing in you, and I believe in you
Don't have a ton of experience with D&D so not exactly sure mechanically. I imagine a kind of stick and move type damage dealer, maybe put some ability improvements towards ranged attacks as we progress. All in all the Monk techniques and abilities are really intriguing to me.
As far as RP goes. Leaf's goals in life revolve around aspirations to lead the most interesting life he can. Though raised to the age of maturity by the Brothers at the Drunken Tabaxi Claw Temple, he knew from the moment he could read the letter that was left with him on the night he was born. That he would seek the life of adventure and exploration that his father wished for him.
Short backstory (2-3 sentences): Auraani ran away from her home village at the age of 15, following an incident that claimed the life of the boy she loved. She was taken in months later by an outcast elf/human couple who taught her in the ways of magic and helped her prepare her first spell book. She wanders the land trying to escape her personal demons and the voices in her head, hoping one day she can forgive herself for the things she has done.
Party Role: Party buff support/Damage dealer

Why not do a Spelljammer adventure?(<link) it would be a standard D&D space adventure. If you convert it to 5e.
