For nearly half a year now, the War of Ash and Light has raged between the Dwendalian Empire and their mysterious foe, the Kryn Dynasty of Xhorhas. Both sides are locked in a bitter stalemate; the frontlines barely shift beyond the Ashkeeper Peaks while raiding parties from both factions slip behind enemy lines to sow chaos and confusion. For now, though, the war has not found its way to you. With the majority of Righteous Brand soldiers mobilized to man the eastern front and the Crownsguard on high alert for any sign of Kryn incursions from below, a blind eye has been turned to growing banditry on the roads between major settlements. Trade caravans that are vital for villages and cities throughout the Empire are vulnerable to such ruthless figures, so it is common for shipping companies to contract mercenaries and adventurers to protect them. Based in Nicodranas, the Bonaventura Trading Company is one of the Coast's major exporters to the Empire, and you were hired to help protect them in the event of any trouble as they make their way to the city of Hupperdook, where your contract ends. Thankfully, any would-be bandits were deterred by your presence and the presence of your fellow guards.
After several days of travel, the city of Hupperdook is near. The caravan rolls into the Lower City just after night falls, setting up near the Builder's Plot. The merchants and laborers begin offloading their supply while Vincenzo Atasca, the head of the caravan security, gathers all the mercenaries to distribute payment.
"Good work, everyone. On behalf of the Bonaventura Trading Company, thank you for your service. Here is your payment, and you are hereby dismissed. If you are interested in taking out another contract for our return journey to Zadash or beyond to Nicodranas, seek us out. We will depart at the end of the week."
One by one, you collect your payments – a total of 15 gold pieces – before heading toward the city gates. The elevated section of the city known as the Idleworks Shelf alight with colorful lanterns and streamers. The distant sound of music and firecrackers echo from hundreds of feet up the stairs of the mountain. You pass by massive forges and partially constructed war machines. All the city's industry has seemingly been abandoned for the night, while the workers of Hupperdook unwind in the celebrations of the upper city.
(Go ahead and introduce your characters as they make their way into Hupperdook. Have fun!)
Ambre smiles and shakes her head, "Oh, so they're going easy tonight on the fireworks," she laughs, Adjusting the straps on her bag as the head into the Upper City. "I remember this one day where the sky was so thick with the smoke from them that my sister wouldn't go outside all day because she was concerned that it was going to mess up her clothes and she didn't want to seem a mess in front of her friends."
As Finn entered the city, he gazed about in wonder at the spectacle laid out before him. "I must say... this is not what I expected." His voice was warm and smooth, project an air of comfort to those who hear him. He his a young man, but his weathered skin gives the appearance of an older man. He has short-cropped black hair and a trimmed beard. He wears a shirt of scale mail. He carries a shield emblazoned with the axe and scales of Erathis, and a simple mace hangs from his belt. He is average height, but carries himself in a way that makes him seem taller than he actually is. He has been a friendly companion on the journey since Zadash, if not particularly talkative. Those who may have slept near him at night will have noticed that he has been sleeping restlessly, this has only gotten worse was the caravan got closer to Hupperdook.
Josias merely manages a weak smile as he looks up at the spectical. "If that's restraint then I agree with your sister. That's a little over dramatic if you ask me." He's a human, dressed in slightly ragged travelling clothes underneath his armor. His dark, shaggy hair and beard add to disheveled appearance. What stands out though is that the left side of his face is criss-crossed by scars. There are deep furrows on his cheek and over his eye, the pupil of which is clouded over, though it doesn't seem to affect his vision. He keeps long sleeves on, no matter the weather but most have noticed similar scars on his left hand as well. "Oh well. A city-wide party should be a good place to get a drink at least."

He walked the streets of Hupperdook lost in thought, the words of Vicenzo still echoing in his ears. The travel from Zadash had been surprisingly calm. Fritz half expected to fight two or three bandit groups and was fortunately wrong. As result his coin purse was fifteen pieces of gold heavier and all he had to do for it was walk, basically. Maybe the same thing would happen on the way back. Or maybe the caravan will be intercepted by the Kryn. It were the words from Ambre that brought him back to reality.
“So you are a local, huh?” He says unsure if she ever made a commentary about her home during their journey. Fritz certainly didn’t. “In the place of your sister I would be more worried about washing the clothes than looking like a mess.” He remembered almost in fear about when he first started his journey. A white robe was a very poor choice of attire. “And if I may ask, what did you expect, Finnegan?”
"A drink," Ambre laughs, "this is Hupperduke. We work hard during the day and play hard when the work is over. Finding a drink is easier than finding an inn."
“And if I may ask, what did you expect, Finnegan?”
"I am not sure, perhaps something a little closer to Rexxentrum. But this...." He gestures broadly to the colors exploding through the night sky. "...This had certainly not crossed my mind."
"Can you direct us to a place that is both then? I would like a drink but I also do not want to end up out in the street at the end of the night. I have no need to have a run in with your Crownguard." Josias says as he slips his gold into a spot inside his armors chestpiece.

“What Josias said and preferably one that might have spanferkel though I doubt such a place exists.” pipes in Lani, small and lithe even by halfling standards as her grey eyes, which generally flow from point to point taking in her surroundings in order to map them out later, are transfixed by the bursts of colors in the air overhead.
Fritz had been to Rexxentrun a few times before. The capital was a far larger city and had probably more than ten times the population, but Hupperdook managed to sound noisier, livelier even. And certainly dirtier, he thought remembering Ambre’s history about her sister. Not that the fireworks were the only source of smoke there. During the day it was easy to spot many towers burning wood or coal. A city of industry, indeed, he admitted looking the color-filled sky.
“It is certainly…”Strange. “Different from Rexxentrum.” He said being careful to not sound rude to the woman who by chance became the guide of their ragtag group. "By the way, is there a place where I can find incense, charcoal and herbs in general? I mean, at this time."
The entire place seemed to live in a festival so Fritz wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the shops were closed, their owners now busy with drink and food. Hopefully he was wrong. Maybe Ambre could even point him to a shop specialized in magic. His priority was stocking components for Find Familiar, but he wouldn’t mind learning where to find some spell scrolls.

"You're more likely to run in with the milita," Ambre laughs, "but I see you point. I'll take you to the one my family likes to go to. It's smaller, but it doesn't get a rowdy. And I don't think I've ever seen Crownsguard patrolling nearby."

"I know a couple of places," Ambre says after thinking a moment, "one has a bigger selection, but has like a 30/70 percent chance of being open this time of night. The other one is smaller, but she's my friend and she probably wouldn't mind opening back up for a sale if I ask her politely."

"Honestly? I'm not really sure I've ever seen it in the city. We're... well," she waves her hands around, "industrial, not a whole lot of royalty coming around for it ya know? But the tavern we're going to serves fantastic Fuses."
On the caravan trip over Quill keeps mostly to himself though he does talk frequently in hushed tones to Finn, but otherwise the Tabaxi keeps to himself. A Tabaxi of few words he performs his duties well. He very rarely ever has the cowl of his dark green cloak down buy you have caught glimpses of a dark furred face with a touch of white on his chin. He is a tall lanky Tabaxi standing at just shy of 6' with movements that lend to the confidence of one who is light on their feet.
Upon arrival to the city Quill gathers the gold from his employer and then deposits them randomly into pockets he has sewn on the inside of his cloak nodding his head in thanks. Then he looks over at Finn to see what he plans on doing and then will follow along behind him trying to stay in the shadows as much as possible, constantly keeping a watch on his surroundings. In a low rumbling voice Quill speaks up, "Drinks would be nice but even better would be a dry place to sleep for change. I enjoy the company and safety of you lot and will go where you go, if it pleases you."
Josias shrugs. "Either way they're likely to be all yo liberal with the cuffs and not understanding of a hangover. It seems we're moving together so lead the way my dear local lady."

You all make your way down the lower city streets, headed toward the lift that will take you to the Idleworks Shelf. Suddenly, the peace of evening is shattered by the deafening crack of a massive explosion that rocks the southeast part of the city. At the base of the mountain, shards of rock spray the street a hundred yards from where you stand. Heavy smoke billows from a cavernous hole in the mountain wall. As you shake the ringing from your ears, six cloaked figures appear in the street, running from the source of the explosion - and charging straight toward you!
Five of them are small, scaled creatures with long snouts poking out from under their hooded cloaks - kobolds! The sixth figure stands much taller than all of you, with ashy gray skin covered in dark, winding marks. As they make their way towards you, the kobolds draw daggers and let out tiny roars. The one at the head shouts, "No witnesses!"
Combat is beginning. For the sake of convenience, I am going to roll initiative for all your characters.
“Well, I guess we don’t get that drink quite yet,” Lani says with a combination of annoyance and excitement in her voice as she trots closer to these intruders. (25’ diagonal up & left) She reaches into her jacket and pulls a dart flinging it at the closest kobold. Attack: 20 Damage: 5
Finn sighs deeply, "This is what we get for a quiet journey..."
As he braces for the incoming violence, he pulls his shield from his back as his eyes white and silky filaments of divine energy coalesce connecting Quill and Josias. Then he'll move towards the house on his left, trying to get a bit of cover.
((Activating Emboldening Bond on Quill and Josias -- once per turn, for 10 minutes you can add 1d4 to an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check as long as you are within 30ft of another bonded creature))

First roll of the game is a natural 20? Dang, that's awesome. Just an fyi, you all should have control of your own character tokens so you can move them on your own. Also, be sure to add your relevant attack modifiers for your weapons - that crit should do an extra +4 damage with Lani's dex mod! Which means...
Despite the adrenaline kicking in, Lani focuses and throws her dart with expert precision, recalling her countless hours spent training with the monks of the Cobalt Soul. It strikes the nearest kobold right in the chest and the creature lets out a pained yelp... when something strange happens. A high-pitched whine emits from the kobold, but not a sound of its own making, something more mechanical. It grows louder before the creature suddenly explodes in a flash of light, destroying its body.
Finn uses his divine powers to embolden his allies.
It is now the kobolds' turn!
The kobolds press forward, seemingly unfazed by the loss of one of their comrades. One of them curves around Lani and attacks with its dagger; the rest draw hand crossbows in their off-hands and loose a flurry of bolts in the group's direction.
Kobold 1 vs. Lani – Attack: 18 Damage: 4
Kobold 2 vs. Quill – Attack: 14 Damage: 9
Kobold 4 vs. Ambre – Attack: 12 Damage: 4
Kobold 5 vs. Finn – Attack: 21 Damage: 8
