Hello, Play-By-Posters of D&D Beyond. I know that many people are feeling bored or restrained by the quarantine rules all around, so I decided to run a campaign that will take your minds off of world news. I wanted the campaign to be something easy for me to DM and for you all to play, so I picked an adventure right from D&D Beyond’s figurative bookshelf. I also wanted it to be about something interesting—something that doesn’t usually get a lot of attention despite how important it is: the Nine Hells. That is why I am running Baldur’s Gate: Descent to Avernus.
If you would like to join in on this adventure, please post or pm with the following:
Character Name
Race
Class
Background
Alignment
D&D experience
I would also like for you to explain how your character came to be in the city of Baldur’s Gate.
Note: Eberron, Ravnica, and Critical Role content are not allowed. Some UA content may be allowed, so please ask if you want something from it. If you have any questions about what is and is not allowed, let me know in a pm. Thank you.
Note 2: Stats should be rolled here. You may reroll ones once. If a set of scores seems too low, I will judge them on a case by case basis.
I've been looking for a PbP game. I've never played one before. Also not an expert on Realms lore, but I'd love to join. My D&D experience is 30+ years mostly being the DM.
Given the hellish theme, I'm considering a PC based on Ghost Rider: someone who sold their soul, but is looking to get out of the deal by using their dark powers for good. Will you allow multi-classing? If so, I'd go with a Fiend patron warlock/Oathbreaker paladin combo. If not, then I'd stick with one or the other. Race would be human (variant if you allow that option).
Class: Warlock (Fiend Patron)(planning to multi-class into Oathbreaker paladin)
Background: Entertainer (Gladiator variant)
Alignment: Lawful neutral
D&D Experience: 30+ years, usually the DM
Vareth grew up in a traveling circus, but was cursed to have no real talent valued by his family. He was physically abused by his father, and no one in the circus troupe raised a hand to help the boy. Since the gods were seemingly ignoring his pleas for escape, Vareth turned to darker forces. He begged the archdevil Levistus to free him from this horrible life, and Levistus answered. Vareth found himself stronger than his father, possessed of magical powers, and suddenly better at fighting, too. Vareth beat his father nearly to death, and was kicked out of the circus for his trouble. He came to Baldur's Gate to seek work in any fight clubs he can find, and has begun to see his powers as a way to deliver justice to other abusers and torturers.
Str 14 Dex 12 Con 14 Int 10 Wis 9 Cha 16
Tavern Brawler Feat
Weapons: Greatclub, Whip (non-proficient, but he is practicing with it)
Class: Ranger (planning to take a level or 2 in rogue)
Background: Hermit
Alignment: Chaotic Good
D&D experience: 8 years as a player, 6 as an (on off) DM
Have been playing/seeing a lot of the other classes lately, so I wanted to dust off my Ranger play. It should be interesting. Btw, I assume we will be starting at level 1, but how are we doing stats?

Zane is in Baldur's Gate to continue his research on an ancient Tabaxi legend of them having had nine lives in ancient history. He has spent many years going through written material, but come up short on leads. He has now turned to collecting lore and stories in the hopes of connecting some dots in the future. What better place to do that than the busiest and most diverse metropolis on this side of the world.
D&D experience: I've only played in a few campaigns (none of which went very far), but I am pretty familiar with the rules.
After being born under a dark star, Coelfrid always felt an immense, supernatural burden placed upon him. After putting up for it for too long, he set out to find answers, scouring the planes for any knowledge that would aid him. He figured a bustling city like Baldur's Gate might give him some clue on where to look.
Lets see how these stats line up and I'll begin work on a character. Would it be okay if I post a few characters, I like to fill positions in a party so I can put a couple characters that fill a few different roles. I'll put other ideas in spoilers if you only want 1 per person. Also is UA okay?
Growing up, Camina always wanted to be like the rangers of the North. She looked up to the legendary ones like Dove. She spent all her youth pretending she was one out in the woods near her town with her friends. One day while she was out in the mountains near her home, she wandered upon an ancient, forgotten shrine. Awestruck by the great stone structure brought low by time, she wandered in bravely, like the rangers would have. As she began to explore, she felt a strangeness in her limbs. She had crossed into the Feywild through a portal in the ruins.
She entered the Feywild in front of an old crumbling fortress. Confused she looked around trying to find where she had come from, but there was no sign of the ruins she had been in. As she looked towards the fortress, a voice beckoned for her to enter. She felt her body moving towards the ominous structure. Just before she would enter, a large moss-covered arm of rock grabbed her. Looking behind, Cami saw a large moss covered being of rock, with a strange oval face and soft yellow eyes. In her mind she heard the ancient being whisper in a voice seldom used, “Do no enter there little one. That is the way of death. Why are you here?” The ancient fey carried her back, away from the fortress to a small stone shrine. The shrine looked familiar to Cami. “You! Your shrine is the one I was exploring before I found that building.” The ancient looked down at her and slowly nodded. Over the course of the next few days, Cami learned that the shrine used to be a great shrine to him and to his forest and mountains, but those who worshipped him at the shrine slowly died off or forgot about him, and as his forest died, and the shrine crumbled, he had fallen into a slumber, resigned to wait out the rest of eternity, forgotten until everything is destroyed and frozen, and everything alive died. He had only awoken when he felt someone wander through the portal in his shrine on the Material Plane. Although he was not sure when the portal would next open, he promised he would try to return her to her own world and would until then keep her safe.
He taught her of the old ways, the primeval magics in the ground, and of his mountain and forest that he had watched over for millennium. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Until 14 months after she wandered into the Feywild, the portal reopened and the ancient being ushered her back to the Material Plane, saying, “Go now little one. Return to your world, to the laughter and warmth. Do not cry for me, for I shall always be by your side.” With that she stepped back into her world. She ran home, to see her parents and tell them of the amazing adventure she had, to see her friends and the looks on their faces when she grew plants from her hands. But when she returned to her village and ran to her house it wasn’t there. Running through the streets looking an old woman cried out her name. “Camina? Do my old eyes deceive me?” It was her childhood friend Shay. The 14 months that had passed for Cami in the Feywild had been 60 years in her world. Cami stayed with Shay for the next few years, caring for her friend and learning about what had transpired. When Shay died, Cami set out to see more of her world, to grow her powers, and to return to the Feywild to see her ancient guardian and see if she could regrow his forest.
Her wanderings brought her to Baldur’s Gate. She had been wandering in the lands near the city, in Wood of Sharp Teeth, following an old bear, when she began to long for the company of civilization again. Walking into the great city, she is looking for companionship, adventure, and a good book.
Murgen
Human/Fighter(Will multiclass bard)/Mercenary
Groaning as the sunlight shines through his window, Murgen sits up, his bones protesting the sudden movement. The old mercenary veteran slides on his shoes, straps on his sword belt, grabs his trusty crossbow, and hefts the heavy book he always keeps with him. The company might not be together anymore, but he would keep their stories with him, filling in any pieces of story that reached his ears of his former compatriots and his own story. He had always been a storyteller, now this would be the last story he ever would tell. At least I’ll make it a damn good one, he thought as he limped out the door of the inn, into the city of Baldur’s Gate and into the Nine Hells.
Murgen grew up an impoverished boy in the slums of Baldur’s Gate some forty some odd years ago. When he was 14, he tried picking the pocket of mercenary of the Grey Wolf Company. The well-trained soldier easily caught him but decided that the young boy’s quick hands would be useful for a job they had gotten. Murgen quickly proved his worth to the company, and they decided to take him with them when they left the city looking for more work. For the next forty years, Murgen rode with, fought with, and bled for the company.
In their last job, things went south. While they were fighting off a pirate attack on the small city they had been hired to protect, a cult to a Infernal Lord summoned a terrible devil. It tore through the city and the back lines of the company. Unable to fight the devil and the pirates, the company scattered to the winds. During the fight, Murgen took a bolt to the leg, crippling him. As the devil came for him, he thought it was all over for him, but the captain of the company leapt in front of him and faced down the Horned Devil. Yelling to Murgen, “Get out of here! Get as many others out as you can! And don’t forget us!” Murgen stumbled to his feet, dragging his wounded leg he stumbled away from the terrible screams. He found a few other company men and they fled the city. Once they all escaped, they agreed that this was the end of the company and each went their own way. Having only ever known the company, Murgen returned to Baldur’s Gate, to live out the rest of his days as a hired hand. When not working to survive, he spends his days writing about his fallen brothers, waiting for a good end to his own story.
Murgen is an old man, dressed in tattered bits of armor that have seen better days. He walks with a limp in his right leg from an old wound. His pipe is never far from his hands. He has a grim outlook on life and doesn’t believe in good and evil. He believes in doing what you must to survive and being true to your word (LN).
He will be a ranged crossbowman with some support spells who focuses on damage and outside of combat utility
Striding down the street of Baldur’s Gate, Elise didn’t even notice the beggars at her feet. She had somewhere to be. Climbing the stairs of the great library, she glided into the hall containing magical studies. “It is in here somewhere. I know it is,” she grumbled to herself. She had spent the last three years reading every book she could find in this cursed place. One of them must have the answer she was looking for. Today was her lucky day, as she was flipping through a mind-numbing book on the history of Watereep’s sewer system, she saw the mention of him. Mordenkainen, and more importantly a mention of his planar travels. “I will find him. No matter what it takes, or how many planes I must chase you. I will kill you,” she swears as she slips the book into her robes and slips out of the library. One step closer.
Elise was born to loving parents. As a tiefling, her early years were filled with distrust and disgust from others. Something she hated. She turned from spending time outside playing to time reading, and the more she read, the more fascinated she became with magic. You could alter the world to fit your designs. No one would dare look at her like that ever again if she had this power. She devoted her life to studying the arcane. Accepted into the mage academy in Waterdeep, she traveled there and studied. While studying there she met a strange man, he offered to help her learn and took her under his wing. Little did she know what she was getting into to. Together they developed new ways to interact with ancient beings, her master chaining them to his will to do his bidding. What she didn’t know was that for each of these spells, he needed to sacrifice part of a willing participants life force. He was using her life force to pay for the spells. As the spells grew in power, so did the drain on Elise. Her friends at the academy saw the changes in her, slowly she was losing her bright energy, her exemplary skills. After an especially powerful summoning, Elise was bed ridden for months. While she lay there, she studied. Not just more about summoning, but also the notes her master and her had been developing. In one she noticed an invisible script. Taking it to her friend they deciphered it and discovered what her master had been doing. They confronted him. He ripped open a rift in the planes and disappeared into the portal while simultaneously unleashing a hell hound. The beast tore Elise’s friend to pieces and would have done the same to her, had the other masters of the academy responded any slower. They burst into the room and destroyed the beast. Seeing only Elise, she was blamed for summoning it and killing her friend and she was expelled from the academy. Now she spends her days hunting for how she might track down and kill her master.
She is a determined and haughty tiefling. Deep red almost brown skin, yellow eyes, and a pair of asymmetric horns, one shorter than the other. Her hair is a dark purple she wears in an over the shoulder braid. Her tail displays her emotions often flicking in annoyance. She is a NE wizard, obsessed with getting her revenge, not caring what it costs others. With her life force having been sapped she knows that she doesn’t have long. Although she doesn’t know exactly how many years were stolen, she doubts she will make it past 30. She will take spells that help her in traveling the planes, summoning, and altering reality
I've been playing dnd for almost 10 years. Me and my friends used to have a forum we would play pbp campaigns in when we scattered for college. I am currently dming 2 Wildemount campaigns for my irl friends (online of course right now, thanks social distancing). As you may have guessed based on how many characters I put together, I currently don't have much to do so I will be pretty consistent in posting.
Griff was born in the slums of Baldur’s gate. Having to fend for himself from a young age, Griff joined up with a group of small-time thiefs that ran some breaking and entering jobs around the city. Griff was the muscle. He preferred intimidation to cracking heads, but, he always did what needed to be done to keep the crew safe and with coin. All that went south recently when they broke into the wrong house. Now Griff is looking for a new crew.

I have played 3.5e and 5e on-and-off in person and on roll20 for the last 13 years. I DMed a 3.5e campaign for about 6 months and have been playing 5e as a player regularly for the last year. I am totally new to PBP and excited for an introduction.
Found at an orphanage by the priests of Neverwinter, Ignace was taken in and raised as a man of faith. Growing up he received training in melee combat and helped keep the peace in the city. While he received visions from his guide Valandras before, the one he received now sends him farther than ever before: Baldur's Gate in flames, winged demons roaming the sky. He set out to answer the call. Arriving after a long journey, his caravan slowly rolls in the gates of Baldur's Gate.
D&D experience: I started playing 35 years ago (AD&D), but due to some life circumstances I had a long break (after 3.5) . I re-started to play last year in several PBP games (here on Beyond and Discord
Wanyar grow up in Neverwinter listening to stories of adventurers, heroes and monsters told by his mother, Aveline. She was a bard of some renown and secretly an Harper. Wanyar trained with her so that he could defend himself with words and if necessary with a blade. After reaching adulthood he also joined the Harpers and started to do some simple missions for them. One day he received a strange missive saying to travel to Baldur's Gate and wait there for further information.
Class Rogue (will want to multiclass with fighter for eldritch knight assassin)
Background Soldier
Alignment Chaotic Good
D&D experience Began playing D&D and AD&D 2nd edition in the 90's (heavy into Dragonlance), then life and school got in the way and it drifted to the side. By happen chance I stumbled onto the critical role campaign 1 and have been trying to play catch up with 5e ever since. I enjoy coming up with various character builds (many from the various characters I grew up with), role playing them and watching them "grow". This would be my second PbP campaign, so this medium I am still learning.
Drohgas, after learning his craft in the High Forest, began to wonder what civilization beyond the forest boundaries was about. He ventured forth, heading south until he came upon the trade way road, and made his way towards the coast on Coast Way road on to Baldurs gate. He decided to ply his trade, and see what experiences he could come across. Staying in the shadows, and within the fog that seem to envelope the city at times, he made his way into this giant of civilization that just awed him to no end

Bosko's cloister of halfling monks routinely sends out its members to watch over communities of downtrodden halflings, standing up for those who would be taken advantage of by the bigger folk. Bosko is recently assigned to Baldur's Gate.

I have played 3.5e and 5e on-and-off in person and on roll20 for the last 13 years. I DMed a 3.5e campaign for about 6 months and have been playing 5e as a player regularly for the last year. I am totally new to PBP and excited for an introduction.
