The Old Recruitment:
I am hoping to run Hoard of the Dragon Queen and need 4-5 players. It is an adventure set in the Forgotten Realms which starts on the road to the town of Greenest.
My Experience: I have been dungeon mastering for about a year, but never by play-by-post.
Submission Deadline: March 19th, 23:59 EDT/GMT-4. I will try to make my choices on the 20th and get back to people as soon as possible. Edit: I am going to take the recruiting tag off because it is very unlikely anyone new is going to post a submission while this is on the second page. You still get until midnight to flesh out your applications if you want to. No new applications will be taken.
Expectations: Ideally everyone would post at least once per day, but we are busy people, so I understand posting less than that. Hopefully everyone could manage at least five posts per week.
Please fill out the following application if you are interested in joining. Your starting level will be level 1. All official sources are allowed.
Name: Ability Scores: 4d6 drop lowest or standard array. You may switch to standard array if you dislike your rolls. Race: Class: Alignment: No evil. Alternative Background Feature: The adventure comes with two alternative background features, and they are contained in the first spoiler below. If you would like one, indicate which one. If you do not want one, you can delete this part from your application. Backstory: The adventure starts with the characters heading to the town of Greenest. You should include a reason for traveling there. The adventure comes with several backstory related bonds. They are included in the second spoiler below if you would like to use one.
Background Features
Cult of the dragon infiltrator: You have infiltrated the ranks of the Cult of the Dragon. Having spied on the organization for quite some time, you are familiar with its inner workings and customs. You have a second identity as an initiate of the cult, enough of a facade to blend in as a simple grunt or servant.
Dragon Scholar: You have studied dragons and their lore for many years. You can automatically identify locations built or used by dragons and can identify dragon eggs and scales by sight. If you fail an intelligence check to recall lore relating to dragons, you know someone or some book you could consult fir the answer, unless the DM rules that the lore is unknown.
Bonds
1. Leosin Erlanthar, a wandering monk, once saved your life. He has sent urgent word for you to meet him in a small town called Greenest. Looks like it is time to pay off that debt.
2. When an orc raid drove your family from your home, the people of Greenest took you in. Anyone who threatens Greenest is your sworn enemy.
3. Every five nights you have a strange sequence of apocalyptic dreams. The world is destroyed by cold, choking fumes, lightning storms, waves of acid, and horrible fire. Each time the dream ends with ten evil eyes glaring at you from the darkness. You feel a strange compulsion to travel to Greenest. Perhaps the answer to the riddle of your dreams awaits you there.
4. Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior and champion of good, is your friend and mentor. He has asked you to travel to Greenest in search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.
5. You have heard rumors that your close childhood friend, a half-elf named Talis, has been kidnapped by a strange group of cultists. Your investigations into the cult have led you to the town of Greenest. You must save her.
6. Being the grandchild of renowned dragon slayer is usually a good way to impress people, but just last week a gang of ruffians attacked you. You barely escaped with your life, but as you fled, the ruffians told you that the Cult of the Dragon never forgets and always avenges. You are hoping to lie low in a sleepy little town called Greenest until this blows over.
7. On his deathbed, your father confessed that he had become involved with a group called the Cult of the Dragon. They paid him to smuggle goods across the Sword Coast. Wracked by guilt, he begged you to investigate the cult and undo the evil he may have helped foster. He urged you to begin your search in a town called Greenest.
8. The dragons destroyed everything you held dear. They killed your family and destroyed your home. Now, with nothing but what you carry on your back and a horrid scar from the near fatal wounds you sustained in the attack, you seek revenge.
9. You and your family were members of the Cult of the Dragon, until your rivals in the cult arranged to wipe you out. Though they slaughtered your kin, you survived, but they think you are dead. Now is your chance for vengeance. Your hit list consists of three names: a human cultist named Frulam Mondath, a half-orc named Bog Luck, and a half-dragon named Rezmir. You have arrived in Greenest, knowing it is next on the cult's list of targets.
10. You have a secret. You were once a gold dragon who served Bahamut. You were too proud and vain, to the point that Bahamut decided to teach you a lesson. You have been trapped in a weak, humanoid body, with your memories of your former life but a dim shadow. You remember only one thing in perfect clarity: Bahamut's command to go into the world and prove your devotion to the cause of good. If you prove worthy, on your death you will return to his side in your true form.
Name: Valas Tethras of House Tethras Ability Scores: Ability scores: 18151313175 Race: High Elf Class: Wizard (Bladesinger) (Possible rogue multiclass) Alignment: Neutral Good
Alternative Background Feature: Dragon Scholar: You have studied dragons and their lore for many years. You can automatically identify locations built or used by dragons and can identify dragon eggs and scales by sight. If you fail an intelligence check to recall lore relating to dragons, you know someone or some book you could consult fir the answer, unless the DM rules that the lore is unknown.
Backstory: The son of a noble elven house, Valas was obsessed with dragons from a young age. He would often get distracted from the rigorous studies across many disciplines that had been thrust upon a young elf in his position in favor of reading all about dragons. It was this obsession that made him ponder the larger world outside of his elven realm and made him want to see the world and discover its many mysteries. Valas's father, however, frowned upon this desire and attempted to force his son to focus on the duties of his lineage. As he grew older, Valas learned to balance his father's expectations with his own secretive study and thus avoid this conflict.
It was then, at a young age of about 90, that the dreams started. Although he couldn't be sure, Valas knew this had to be related to dragons, or at least the fate he always felt tugging at him from outside of his elven realm. Valas made one final plea to his father that their house should be more involved in the outside world, perhaps even joining the Lord's Alliance, and let Valas travel to Greenest and find out if something was happening that could affect everyone in Faerun, but still he was refused. This is what led Valas to flee his homeland, armed with spell and sword but little experience beyond the many stories read in the family library over his many years of study. A small part of Valas hoped that some day he could find some way to convince his father to engage the power of House Tethras with the rest of the world for the good of all, but in the end he knew this was unlikely.
Optional, a twist on one of the Bonds the DM listed: What Valas doesn't know is that his father is secretly helping the Cult of the Dragon. He will aid them however he can and happily watch them destroy the human races in exchange for the safety of his house and local elven community.

Name: Kosef Starag Ability Scores: Standard array: 16 8 14 10 12 14 Race: Variant Human (GWM) Class: Fighter Alignment: Lawful Neutral Backstory: Like his father and mother before him, Kosef Starag worked in the executions department of the Baldur's Gate Flaming Fist. He specialized in beheadings. But his corrupt commander asked him to do his job poorly, asked him to cause pain and suffering to an enemy of one of the Dukes rather than a quick, just death. Kosef loves perfection. He refused to botch the beheading and found himself unemployed. And with enemies of his own.
These enemies had surrounded him in a grim, cold Baldur's Gate alley. Kosef would have been overwhelmed if not for Leosin Erlanthar, a wandering monk, who saved his life. They parted ways not long after, and Kosef has been looking for work in Beregost since then. But now Leosin has sent urgent word for them to meet in a small town called Greenest.

Name:Kendes Jevolath Ability Scores: 10 18 14 12 16 12 Race: Triton Class: Monk Alignment: Neutral Good Alternative Background Feature: Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator Backstory:
Kendes knew that tritons who lived away from the sea were rare. He was well aware that the Jevolath family was strange from a very early age. For one, he lacked a mother or any siblings; for as long as he could remember, it had been just himself and his father, Valgas. Kendes always felt something was missing from his life, but his father never answered clearly when Kendes asked why they’d left the sea, or what became of his mother.
Instead, they traveled the Sword Coast extensively as merchants. With time, Kendes came to understand certain truths: merchants didn’t hide their goods from the guard. Merchants didn’t utilize their innate talents to slip things onto ships unnoticed from underwater. The Jevolath family was not a family of merchants; they were a pair of smugglers. “Do the job and ask no questions,” his father had always instructed him. This sat uneasily in Kendes’ heart, but Valgas was the only family he knew, and his father loved him. So Kendes did as he was told, and worked hard to establish himself as a smuggler his father could be proud of.
It was only when Valgas fell ill and lay dying, unable to complete the current run, that Kendes finally learned what they had been smuggling together all those years. Goods meant to serve the Cult of the Dragon; goods that weighed more heavily on his father’s conscience on his deathbed than the profit they brought. As Kendes’s world fell apart, his father left him with one final request: atone. Atone for the sins he had committed, the deeds he had forced Kendes to commit in the name of family. Undo the damage that had been done; use that family name and reputation to infiltrate this cult in Greenest and bring them to ruin, or at least stop their evil ways.
With little left but his father’s dying wish and the only trade he’d ever known to ply, Kendes set off to the town of Greenest, to discover more of the Cult’s purpose -- and keep his vow to his father.

Race: Changeling
Class: Rogue
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Alternative Background Feature: Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator
Backstory: Tag grew up in a big village to two loving parents and a smattering of siblings. They quickly learned how to control their shape-changes thanks to their parents and older siblings. The family often portrayed themselves as humans with tanned skin, red hair, and brown eyes. It was easy enough to see the resemblance between the family then. (Though Tag loves switching it up to be an elf or a tiefling from time to time. Gotta keep people on their toes, right?) Wanderlust hit Tag hard in their teenage years. Two of their siblings already had left, while a couple others planned on settling down in town. So they packed a bag and left off to adventure.
It didn’t take long before they found the sea and fell in love there. In their preferred form, Tag is small, quick, and flexible. They became an adept deckhand, often being the one to volunteer to climb up to the crow’s nest. They stayed on the ship for a handful of years, watching crew members come and go. They never thought they’d leave.
But then they’ve caught word that their old friend Talis has been kidnapped. They haven’t spoken to the half-elf in years, but there’s something undyingly loyal within Tag. So they’ve been making their way into the Cult of the Dragon, hoping for some answers. The path so far… It looks like Tag is heading for Greenest for some more answers.
Name: Hadavan Kathanamne Ability Scores:Ability scores: 15121213158 I'll use standard array Race: Wood Elf Class: Barbarian Alignment: Chaotic Good Alternative Background Feature: Dragon Scholar Backstory: Near the end of Hadavans childhood, two dragons decided his forest home was the perfect location to fight each other. Many elves died that day, and only his mother survived as they fled to some cousins living in a human town, just to die to her wounds when they finally got there. A deep anger was born inside him that day, and he concentrated it into a cold rage, to better focus on his new purpose in life: to learn everything he can about dragons to get his revenge. Nobody does revenge quite like an elf. He first travelled the libraries of the land for a hundred and fifty years, learning not only all he could of dragons, but also about how to use his fury as a weapon against them. Then, he returned to his cousin, and trained for another fifty years. And now, at the age of 300, he feels ready to take the fight to the dragons. He has traveled for a bit, and recently heard news of dragon activity near a town called Greenest. That is his current destination.

Name: Rhoop Dufflepudd
Ability Scores: Ability scores: 121310121613
Race: Lotsuden Halfling (or Forest Gnome if CR content is a no go)
Class: Warlock (Archfey)
Alignment: True Neutral
Background: Spy
Backstory: Clan Dufflepudd was quite large and nomadic. The innate restlessness of their race multplied by dozens of families led to a large caravan of small folk traveling from shiny locale to shiny locale but never staying for more than a week. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for those of the clan to get distracted and wander off, then be understandably left behind as they were wished the best of luck with their curiousity. Rhoop was one such individual. Exploring a particularly peculiar and misty part of the woods he found himself in one evening, he got lost but also found...himself. This newfound sense of self unlocked hidden potential within the young Rhoop and emboldened his philosophy of "take a copper, leave a copper" to a whole new level of balancing the scales. Using his gifted skills as a spy for some well (and less well) meaning folks, he finds himself in between jobs at the moment, and staring at a new town of opportunities appearing on the horizon.

Name: Bomas
Ability Scores:91915201418
Race: Aarakocra
Class: Ranger
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Backstory: Bomas is an orphaned Aarakocra due to an Orc raid that left him separated from his parents and his home as a youngling. After years of barely scraping by and wandering, Bomas eventually settled near the town of Greenest. While Bomas sought to use the nearby forest as a hunting ground and as a way to maintain distance from humans, eventually a human ranger found Bomas alone in the woods. Bomas fled initially from the ranger, but the ranger was not discouraged.
The ranger, curious about why a lone Aarakocra was camped out near the town, endeavored to continue to make an effort to satisfy their curiosity. Over the course of months, the ranger continued to make friendly gestures toward Bomas through gifts of food and clothes. Bomas began to warm up to the ranger, and eventually trusted him enough to follow him into town. The town welcomed Bomas in with open arms, educating him in human language and providing him a greater community to rely on. Due to the nature of Aarakocra, Bomas never lived in any of the town's lodging but was always comfortable with perching himself on top of the buildings, watching over his newfound community.
The ranger treated Bomas as though he were one of his own and taught him how to use a bow so that he could assist in gathering food for Greenest. The ranger gradually taught Bomas how to use a sword, a dagger, and how to track men as well as wild game. By the time Bomas had fully matured, he had become an excellent hunter and competent Ranger.
Although Bomas had a tragic beginning, through great luck and perseverance he has managed to find a fulfilling existence and a new family. While one day Bomas would like to find his family again and reconnect with the Aarakocra, he is first and foremost a staunch defender of Greenest. Beholden to their generosity.

Halnan was born to a human woman who was an acrobat in a traveling troupe. His father is an unknown elf man that she met one night and had a single affair with. He has been a part of the troupe since his birth. His specialty is to advertise the troupe to the community that they are visiting and to bring in business. He doesn't have the same dexterity as his mother, as he's kind of a plump fellow, however this works as a benefit to him as it makes people trust his face more easily. He also sometimes tells stories during intermissions to keep the crowd entertained.
Lately Halnan has been having dreams of darkness encroaching, and wakes feeling like there was something growing from his back, that is no longer there, at least according to everyone around him.
His troupe has come to a new town, Greenest, and during one of his fevered dreams he saw a storm of lightning and fire descend on the town, he expects strange things to occur now that they've arrived.

Ability Scores: Standard array: 16 8 14 10 12 14
Race: Variant Human (GWM)
Class: Fighter
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Backstory: Like his father and mother before him, Kosef Starag worked in the executions department of the Baldur's Gate Flaming Fist.
Looks like it is time to pay off that debt.

Name: Kendes Jevolath
Ability Scores: 10 18 14 12 16 12
Race: Triton
Class: Monk
Alignment: Neutral Good
Alternative Background Feature: Cult of the Dragon Infiltrator
Backstory:

Alternative Background Feature: Dragon Scholar
Backstory: Near the end of Hadavans childhood, two dragons decided his forest home was the perfect location to fight each other.
Ability Scores: Ability scores: 12 13 10 12 16 13
Name: Bomas
Ability Scores: 9 19 15 20 14 18
