I'd like to introduce Crux! They are an experienced player who I invited to help out, so if you have any questions over the course of the game we can help you!
So, I understand that you haven't played D&D before but I wanted to ask just how familiar you are? Like to you know how to build a character, or do you own the rulebooks, or are you completely new?
Hey Guys! I'm happy to help! I'm a 30 year old man who started DMing 5e about 5 years ago, and like Turlin mentioned, we are here to help you get started.
Well to start off every one needs to make a character. The setting is going to be a pretty classical fantasy with bit of steampunk setting of my own creation.
To make a character you can use the character creation tool on this website. Their is a little box you can check that gives more detail for new players. And for this we'll be starting at Level 1 and using standard array for the stats. Please remember, if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask!
Hey Turlin. Since I don't know much about the starting area or the adventure I went with a pretty generic backstory for a Goliath Bard. https://ddb.ac/characters/33606614/CGqk64
So I see their are questions on the setting so let me explain. It's homebrew by the way.
We start in the small kingdom of Aezairia, which is in an unusual place because it's on the verge of a new age of law, technology, and culture. Their are rumors of things called firearms and light-bulbs. The people in the large cities are wearing new and odd cloths and for many traditionalists and wizards, all this new technology, less magic, and ideas are bit disturbing. Whats worse is in this budding age their seems to be less adventurers, but double the problems!
You could be a foreigner from the renaissance country La Spairtia, the religious Lighthaven, the magical Al Magak, or the mysterious Kuri. You could be a local who wants to go back to the age of magic and adventurer or one who embraces this new age of technology and ideas. Or you could honestly be anything else you think of!
(The setting is like a classical fantasy world going into the Victorian era)
Ok I joined the campaign as a High Elf Cleric. Ive never played before and don’t own any rulebooks or anything but I am familiar with the basic concepts and rules. I have watched a lot of D&D that Viva La Dirt League and The Guild has up on YouTube and I have played Fantasy RPG’s my whole life. I added my character to your campaign but I havent typed up a full bio/backstory do I need to right now?
So you can write as simple or complicated of a backstory as you want!
I do have some requirements, like, they have to already know each other and worked together before. Perhaps old friends, a new group, or a old adventuring group down on their luck, or what ever ya'll decide.
This will be a play-by-post (PBP) campaign. That means that we each update on are own time. for example, lets say you in a tavern and post a question for the barkeep. Then you will wait intill I can post as the barkeep to give an answer. This all means that PBP games take longer than normal ones, but it's good for people who don't have a lot of time. In order to keep momentum, its best to post at least once every three days, but its best to try to post at least once a day.
PBP also effects how battles work. Because waiting for players to post their turn could really slow things down, the turn order is more fluid. Instead of a set turn order each side of the fight (player and baddies) add their Initiative rolls together to see which side goes first. When its your sides turn, you should post your actions as soon as you can in order to keep the battle going.
Now we could all show up at a certain time, but I'm afraid I'm stretched a bit to this right now be able to do that.

Ok I will write a little something world-specific. Can you explain how playing via message board works? Do we have to schedule a time to be on?
Okay so...
